If your house was burning.....

My jewelry box and my photos. The rest can burn.

Actually, I really worry about getting my cats out. We did a fire drill not too long ago and they freaked out. I would be afraid I would be able to find / catch them.

To those of you who have actually been through this I am truly sorry. I cannot imagine what that would be like.
And of course, I'm not suggesting that anyone run back into a burning building once their loved ones are safely out. No material possession in the world is worth risking your life over.

This was just meant to be an interesting question to see what is most important to people other than the obvious answer of family and pets. Hopefully no one took any offense to this or was upset by it. If they did, I apologize.

My pillow and all of my pictures.

First my wedding rings. Second my girls photo albums. Third our video tapes of the girls, than my butt would be out of there!

Nothing. I would never go back into a burning home once all people and pets were out.

Since so many are saying pics,.... my step-dad once told me that he kept all of his photo negatives in his safe deposit box at the bank. It would be easy now with all the digital to download them to CDs and keep a copy there or to give copies as a "just in case" to other family members.

Thanks to the OP for clarifying that you only meant to discuss what's really important :)

In that spirit, my photo albums would be the thing I'd try to get and my videos of my kids. :goodvibes

In reality, I know there is no time to grab anything. (Not from personal experience). I was just talking to my kids about this the other day. I've read it only takes two minutes for a house to become completely involved in a fire. You must get out as fast as possible and not go back inside. Go here and watch the video of how long it takes a room to be engulfed in flames after a Christmas tree catches on fire.

http://www.usfa.fema.gov/safety/tips/treefir.shtm

Notice how quickly the room becomes filled with smoke! Pretty scary! Please have a plan to evacuate your home in case of fire. Have a meeting place outside so you'll know everyone's out. If you have pets, figure out who's going to grab them. You need two potential exits from each room (ie - a door and a window). Get your kids and pets and get out.

Back the the OP's topic, yes, it's good to stop and remember the things that are really important. :goodvibes Most stuff is just...stuff.

Knowing that my family and pets were safe would be enough for me. We had a house fire 2 years ago and lost everything so I have learned that material things do not mean much and you can definitely survive without them! :goodvibes
(BUT - this experience is also why we now copy all of our pictures onto CD's and keep offsite!)

If my family was outside and I was still inside I would try to save the friendship quilt that my greatgrandmother made before 1900. THat is if I had a chance. All the photos are scaned onto disk and stored in a safe deposit box so they can be replaced but the quilt is a one and only. My DH would save his glasses he cant see a foot in front of him without them.

Pictures!

I could replace everything else with insurance coverage, but pictures I can't.

Photo Albums, Laptop, and Build a Bears. The reason I add build a bears, there are to many memories in those bears.

I would grab the fire safe that has all of our passports, adoption papers, naturalization papers, and insurance papers in it. We just happen to keep it in the closet next to the door.

I have a picture of my old doggy thats framed with a poem, so I would grab that with her collar. Or a watch that I have with a picture of my old doggy and my kitty together on it.

None taken.

Pictures, my old book collection and my purse. This is based on that this is just a thread to see what is most important.

I once saw a question asked about what you would take if you had to evacuate and you had 30 minutes or whatever to get things. This question is kind of like that.

and your family/pets were already out, what would you save first?

"Leave the gun. Take the cannoli."

NOTHING. I am terrifed of fire. I freeze up when I see it. (Horrible expericence when I was little) I would get out and not look back.

I'm in the majority with pictures. I like the idea of putting getting together all the negatives and putting them in the safety deposit box. If I did that, there'd be nothing insurance couldn't replace (except maybe my peace of mind).
