If you were the judge, what would your sentence be for 1st time DUI offenders?

Major community service for the first offense- second offense lose you home or whatever other possesions you own! Perhaps if their comforts were on the line they would think twice about driving after drinking and putting innocent people in their line of fire!! And yes-I have had a loved one die from a drunk driver-hit head on while on a bridge. Cousin went right out the windshield and into the water and was found the next day. Just because some moron wanted to have a few drinks at the beach!

When the law is fixed to differentiate between the guy who has a beer or 2 after work and the guy who has just drank a case and a half along with a fifth of Jack, then this could be discussed. I'd hate to see a guy have a beer after work and not make it home because he was "shot on the side of the road."

They have a media campaign going on in the area where I live which says "buzzed driving IS drunk driving." (Maybe it is nation-wide...I don't know because I only live here ;) ) It is specifically targeted at the idea that "just a couple" is okay, working to combat the tendency for people to think that you have to be stumbling around falling on your face drunk on that case and a half plus a fifth in order to be under the influence of alcohol. If you are over the legal limit you have no business being on the road, whether it's "just a little buzzed" or "walking on your lips." Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, and "just a little buzzed" can be all it takes to kill somebody.

First it would depend on what is considered a DUI. My husband hadn't had anything to drink at all yesterday but if you saw the two of us you would have thought he was drunk(he kept saying stupid stuff, couldn't really walk straight etc.) It was 6 PM and he had been up since 2 AM on very little sleep the night before.

If he drove should that have been a crime? I'm sure driving while tired causes tons of accidents, not as many as driving while smashed but still quite a few.

That IS a crime!

Oct. 1, 2003 -- Didn't sleep well last night and have a long drive ahead of you? You might want to think twice before getting behind the wheel if you don't want to end up in jail, or even dead for that matter.

New Jersey legislators recently passed the nation's first law that specifically named driving while drowsy as a criminal offense, and many other states may soon follow suit, including New York.

Also wanted to add I checked wikipedia for a chart on approximate number of drinks for legal limits depending on weight. By that I could have 3 or 4 drinks before I'm over the legal limit. So the guy that has just 1 or 2 after work should not be over the legal limit.

3. 200 Hours of community service

A second offense - well, let's just say they might not see the outside world for a VERY LONG time. :thumbsup2

I think 200 hours of community service, then a 1 day inservice on what will happen if they get caught again. They would have to sign an affidavit acknowledging the costs of being caught again.

Second time, loss of License for 1 year beginning after being released from county jail after 3 months.

i don't agree with jail time only because it costs tax payers a lot of money, house arrest with the exception of going to work-but they have to wear their ankle monitor and bright shirt that say something about the dwi. Lots and lots of community service in a very public place, wearing the same bright shirt. I like the idea of part of the community service working with accident victims (even if they aren't dwi victims, just to see what could have happened). In other words, a lot of public humiliation :thumbsup2.

In mn you get to drive around with whiskey license plates (a w with a circle around it on your license plate) for a dwi conviction :thumbsup2.

+1!!!
