If you were planning to take a train from Seattle to Vancouver, then ferry over to Victoria...

then when you went to make your train ticket purchase, discovered they were sold out, what would you do?

I'd do the above.

But are you sure they're sold out. That's weird. They're never sold out. Is this like for tomorrow?

You can also fly straight to Victoria. Or take the ferry to port angeles, then another to Victoria. Or a bolt bus to Vancouver instead of the train.

But another thing to consider is that unless you are actually visiting Vancouver before Victoria, that first option is much faster anywhay. The BC ferries don't actually serve Victoria. They serve Sidney. Which is at least an hour by bus from Victoria. The clipper from Seattle actually goes to Victoria old harbor.

I read it as a "what would you do if...." question. Not that they are in the situation.

Oh, so did I, but I really have never heard of that train selling out unless it's the week of. I'm wondering if it's just a case of looking too far in advance.

OP? If you give me your dates, I would be happy to research it for you!

why not book the Victoria Clipper from Seattle to Victoria directly and avoid the train?
We were all looking forward to the scenery we'd see on the train. We've got flights into Seattle to spend a day there. I'm guessing we'll have to ferry over.

We are going to Vancouver on May 19.

But the fact it's so soon and a Friday explains things. I'm guessing you fly in Thursday? Because there are seats on the Thursday train. But you can't make that if you fly in day of.

Where do you fly out of? If Seattle, I would just go straight to Vancouver via bus, and move everything back one day. This is assuming that you're spending time in Vancouver.

If you don't have to go to Vancouver at all, ferry scenery is better than train scenery.

+1 for the Clipper...

Could you Clipper to Vicoria, BC Ferries to Vancouver, cruise and then take the train back to Seattle?

Don't miss Victoria, whatever way you can get there. We spent a week there last year with 3 grandkids and there was plenty for them to do...loved it. We live in Portland, OR, so we drove to Port Angeles and ferried over. Saw whales on the way back.

We fly to Seattle EARLY on the 18th to spend the day there. We're booked to stay in Victoria on the 19th. Will ferry to Vancouver on Sunday and cruise on Monday.

Everyone likes the idea of seeing scenery on the train, then ferry to Victoria. I had mentioned ferrying straight over to Victoria, but the rest of the group wanted the train.

I think the ferry straight to Victoria will be easier.

Are you flying out of Vancouver? Why can't you do the train on the way back?

Thoughts...
  • Celebrate! Vancouver is a great port to be stuck without a boat or plane.
  • if the Vancouver to Seattle segment is sold out.... Amtrak and Bolt bus have several buses to get you to Seattle.
  • find out when they open ticket sales..... I hear the Western facing windows seats are the first to go for the views. What time do you need to show up?

That's not realistic... The Amtrak train does not go from the airport to the Clipper ferry terminal.
  • You will use light rail, bus or taxi to the Clipper ferry terminal
  • ride the Clipper to Victoria
  • ride BC Ferry or the Prince of Whales to Vancouver
  • go on your cruise
  • return to Seattle via Amtrak
To clarify.... is the plan to ride the May 21st ferry to Vancouver??? That's a long weekend! Be prepared for crowds on the ferry Sunday afternoon.

Don't think you have enough days for Vancouver.

Kenmore air for flight to Victoria from Seattle? Is it more expensive than the clipper?
sometimes you can find decent one-way prices, but they can be be more expensive than the clipper. Sometimes you can find deals/coupons for the clipper. Depending on the time of your flight back out of Seattle, I'd take the clipper to Victoria and then take the train from Vancouver back to Seattle. Increases your chances for better weather for the train ride back :-) Personally, I think the scenery on the Clipper is better (but I liver in up here and see the "scenery" all the time, so water is always better for me, even if its just a ferry ride across the sound)! If you don't want to do the clipper, you can do the slower ferry up to Vancouver (it doesn't cost as much as the clipper, but takes quite a bit longer).

Whatever you plan to do, remember that Monday May 22 is a holiday in Canada (Victoria Day in BC). We live in Victoria and my daughter also has May 19 off for a professional development day, so some families are planning four day weekends during May 19 - 22. Any kind of transport from the mainland to the Island (especially BC Ferries) is going to be busy that weekend. If you can book the Clipper, that is what I would do.

Yeah...you might actually want to check the clipper NOW. Because if the train is sold out, I'd be concerned about the clipper. You might have to do blackball or take a bus.
