What UY would be best if you want to travel usually in June? We are considering getting a HHI resale

June would be best but anything Dec to June should work fine. If you're looking resale, don't limit yourself too much.

Dean,
Don't you mean June to Dec--that is June, Aug., Sept., Oct., Dec? June and the months just after June would be ideal. If you ever have to cancel a ressie you will still have lots of time to make alternate plans or to bank points.

Nope. The best use year for one who travels consistently the same time of year is simply the use year that starts as close to BEFORE the usual travel as possible. The reason is that use year has no direct bearing on reservations but certainly does on cancellations and rescheduling or banking or even renting the points or reservation. The worst one is the one that starts the closest but after to the usual travel time.

I personally think use year is more important than most, it gives essentially an insurance policy for each and every reservation that might have to be changed or cancelled, especially if in the 30 day window.

The only thing about this is that it assumes that vacation travel patterns are consistent every year, or just annual trips.

If someone bounces around the calendar with their trips, then UY as an "insurance policy" doesn't work that well. And if someone lives fairly close to WDW and will be going, say, in the summer but also the holiday season each year, then no UY will provide great protection.

But for the OP, who stated that they would be going in June most of the time, I'd agree with Dean completely.

Okay, Guys. I was REALLY mixed up on this! I should have known that Dean would never accidently post in error! I had to set up a scenario for myself to get it straight in my head. Note to self and OP, listen to Dean (and Granny)! No worry about brain blips! Sorry for adding to the confusion, OP. Sorry, Dean. :guilty:

Not a problem, LOL. Granny is right that use year offers NO protection for those that will bounce around through ALL times of the year, however, I think that's a somewhat unusual situation. More usual is the person who travels at several different set times of the year and/or their habits change over the years.

In the situation of the OP where one travels consistently enough in one timeframe, I feel like use year (best compared to worst) has $$$ value equivalent up to around the value of one years points minimum, maybe even more for one one is at significant risk of last minute changes repeatedly. For one who travels consistently different times of the year but those times are separately by 5-6 months, I think use year is important as well and at times, even MORE important. For one who has 3 usual travel times and there is a gap of around 8 months AND for those that are truly all over the calendar, use year is not particularly important. One's personal situation also has a lot to do with this issue but that is far more likely to change over the years than even the timing of trips is.

I'd guess that ON AVERAGE, roughly every single LONG TERM member will end up losing a vacation over the years to something not truly expected. That may mean losing points or having to rent cheap or give away to friends or family. Those of us who actively consider and plan around this idea, will be far less likely to be the one's who lose out but it could attack even the most fervent planner.

I forgot to add that the missymouse's thinking is light years ahead of where I was when we bought DVC. We never even thought about use year and it was strictly luck that we got one that works well for us. Now that I am retired and we travel consistently in Oct. and Dec., our Oct. use year is perfect. We never go in the summer, another reason that our Oct. use year is good. I have reflected many times on our good fortune in this regard (another reason why it is really stupid that I should have been confused about a good use year being immediately BEFORE your regular ressie!)

Dean, this is very well stated and I agree completely. I guess I should think more of the general DVC owner rather than my own situation. We've gone in May, June, July and August and now will be going in December. When I retire in a few years we'll be going for F&W and some off-peak times. So I look at our situation and know that UY is not too critical overall, but could easily come into play for any given reservation. That's one reason I like having two contracts with a February and October UY so we can use the one that offers the most "protection" against cancellation.
