i was just curious about something.

if you were shopping for a resale, and saw 2 different listings with exactly the same properties, except one of them had an uneven number of points, which one would you buy?

i.e.
Resale#1 =
Your Favorite DVC Resort
Your Favorite Use Year
All of last year's points banked
All of current year's points present
All of next year's points coming
Seller asking $70/pt.
# of points = 250 points (what a nice, pretty even number, right? ;) )

Resale#2 =
Your Favorite DVC Resort
Your Favorite Use Year
All of last year's points banked
All of current year's points present
All of next year's points coming
Seller asking $70/pt.
# of points = 252 points (what a weird, odd number, right? )

more commentary to come, after we get some poll results.

I guess I would buy the 252 point contract. All I can say is - "The More Points The Better."

Our first contract was 252 - a wierd, odd number. It was the amount to get a one bedroom villa for a week at the BCV during dream season when we usually go. We didn't want the hassle of being 2 points short. Of course, we then decided we wanted a 2 BR...go figure. Sandie

Our second contract was 136....So 252 Doesn't sound that wierd..

Here is another thought...with 252 you could stay exactly one week during Dream Season in a 1 bdrm at BCV, BWV (preferred),VWL...I think that was probably the thinking when they purchased...

The more the merrier.

It wouldn't sound weird if by some combination of seasons and dates you came up 2 short!

252 points are the exact number for a one bedroom for a week during dream season at BCV.

1) For right now ! ! !
2) DVC can change the allotment of points for any season. **
3) All they do is shift points requirements among seasons.
4) They can also shift points from days to weekends.
5) You eventually might end up a couple over or a couple short.

** DVC can't change the points needed for the entire year, but have total flexibility in re-arranging the point requirements for days and/or weekends throughout the year.

Understood TheRustyScupper. I was just explaining why I thought that someone created that contract. My vote was to take the larger number of points. Everything else about the contracts were the same and the difference in maintenance fees over 39 years is, I believe, immaterial. At least it would be for me.

Does anyone know how many times in DVC history allocations have been made? Am I correct that they did it only once in the mid 1990s?

The cost differential is so small that the extra two points would be a plus. Annmarie

The answer is once or twice, depending on how you count the changes made for BWV. From what I've read on these boards, there was definitely a reallocation done for OKW. I don't recall the specific details.

Before the BWV was sold out, DVC did change the point structure to add the standard view option. Again, I don't recall details, but I don't believe the point requirements for the majority of the rooms (now known as preferred view) were adjusted much, if at all. DVC apparently did this by adjusting (decreasing) the total number of points it planned to sell. Since the resort was far from sold out, it could do this without "violating the total number of points rule". To me, this wasn't really a reallocation. I've also read that managing two different "levels" of rooms is a hassle and that it is very unlikely that this type of structure will ever be repeated.

For a few extra dollars you buy yourself some insurance and flexibility in your trip plannin'. I would go with the 252 in a heartbeat.

hm... well, maybe i should've changed the numbers to be 252 and 255. :p

i really was just curious if there's some kind of aversion to uneven numbers that don't end in 0 or 5.

because most people seem to feel like they have to round off.

but then i'm posting this poll here in the DISboards, where more points is always better! so i guess this poll doesn't really work the way i wanted it to here, huh? ;)

(btw, these aren't real contracts, just in case anyone didn't figure that out ;) )

I didn't figure it out....it made perfect sense to me....that they were real contracts....silly me..

They didn't actually reallocate the points for BW. They made NO changes in the "preferred view points" and simply created a lower class of rooms that were lower points. I don't know specifics but I'm sure they did this through a legal registration means. How could anyone argue with having less points sold for their home resort but the same access. Besides the standard view rooms are very sought after.

I'm wondering about the motivation of this thread other than for fun. From my standpoint it would simply be which one were cheaper pp so I'd haggle. As hotwire says, do you haggle at the dollar store? Do you think penny candy is overprices? Do you wash the paper plates? To make a different between these 2 contracts on a resale from the direction of the number of points would be stupid.

Thanks CarolMN and Dean for the previous allocation information.
