I have been looking at this book, but keep putting it back on the shelf. I was wondering if it gets really into a "fantasy" genre? I like the parts of King's book that have a more realistic touch to it. I don't like aliens, time travel, etc.

Which way do you think this book leans towards? But no spoilers please!

For the most part, the book is realistic in what happens through the whole story. The "fantasy" part of it is how the dome got there and how they get it to go away. There is very little time spent on that part of the story and its resolution.

I got the book from the library just before Christmas, but after reading a few chapters I knew I wanted to put it on my Christmas "wish list." I did end up getting my own copy for Christmas, so I quickly returned the library copy so someone else could have it.

I've just read a bit over 400 pages and I'm really, really enjoying it. It is very good, no aliens, time travel or anything of that nature. Good and descriptive and at first, with the huge cast of characters, I thought it would be hard to keep everyone straight but it's not. I think it's very realistic, except of course for the dome itself!

I couldnt put it down, it just has minimal alien references. A great story.

How many pages is the book? I Saw the audio version is 34 hours:scared1:

About 1,000 pages. But, it's not a *hard* read, if that makes sense. I have also read other books that large but they were very tough books to read and took me weeks to get through. This wasn't an "easy reader" like James Patterson's stuff, but it wasn't overly difficult either.

It's quintessential King. He does an incredible job of character development and is dead on with creating an illusion of reality (if you've ever been to, or live in Maine you know exactly what I mean).

Fantasy? Well, the whole premise is fantastic. As to how it is addressed at the close of the story... yep. Fantasy or sci-fi, whichever you prefer.

I had to write a paper on a science fiction text where the science does not exist but everything else is normal. I chose Under the Dome and it worked out perfectly. I did not even refer to the fantasy aspects except for the dome itself.

Thanks! I think this will be one to buy!

Just finished reading this last night. took me longer to read this book than ANY other Stephen King I have read. Not that it wasn't good, it IS good. Just there were some 'unbelievable' parts for me.
That said, I did enjoy it and will probably read it again sometime. helps that the Kindle price was only 7 bucks :thumbsup2

i agree with you - it's definitely one of his best. Just finished it today. It would make a great movie if they stayed true to the storyline.

I am reading this book right now (on page 400) the only complaint I have about it is that it is sooo heavy. I think they should've broke it down into a series like the green mile or something. I guess I just need to lift some weights:rotfl:

So far it has been a very good book!

It definitely is heavy!! I took the cover off of it, because it just kept slipping up when I turned pages. And it hurts my leg to have it resting on it!

This book is so big that my Kindle gained 5 lbs. when I downloaded it! :lmao:

I'm about halfway through and having a hard time with it. It is quintessential King, for sure, and I am a huge fan (I met the man once and was able to check that off my Bucket List!).

I'm going to stick with it since I've heard it pays off. :thumbsup2

I just finished this book a few days ago. It was definitely a very real book with serious characters. I really enjoyed reading it and hardly put it down, but after I finished I felt kind of blah about it. I guess I just felt like the ending wasn't satisfying. Anyone else?

I'm loving this book. I agree it was very heavy and tough to lug back and forth for my commute. However, I was very fortunate to get a Kindle for Christmas. Now the weight of the book isn't a consideration at all. Get a Kindle if you can, before you buy the book. ;)

I have always felt somewhat disappointed by King's endings. The real joy of his stories, for me, has always come from the characters. He builds suspense like no other author (I had to throw "Pet Cemetary" out of my dorm room when I was in college and it's the only book to ever actually make me jump out of my skin!), but no ending can really match what he appears to be building up to.

"The Stand" is the best book I've ever read and I've read it several times but I prefer to leave off the end...
