Crocs were born of the economic boom.

The colorful foam clogs appeared in 2002, just as the country was recovering from a recession. Brash and bright, they were a cheap investment (about $30) that felt good and promised to last forever. Former president George W. Bush wore them. Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler wore them. Your grandma wore them. They roared along with the economy, mocked by the fashion world but selling 100 million pairs in seven years.

Then the boom times went bust, and Crocs went to the back of the closet.

The company had expanded to meet demand, but financially pressed customers cut back. Last year the company lost $185.1 million, slashed roughly 2,000 jobs and scrambled to find money to pay down millions in debt. Now it's stuck with a surplus of shoes, and its auditors have wondered if it can stay afloat. It has until the end of September to pay off its debt.

"The company's toast," said Damon Vickers, who manages an investment fund at Nine Points Capital Partners in Seattle. "They're zombie-ish. They're dead and they don't know it."

Two summers ago, Nancy Fisher of the District bought two pairs of Crocs, one green and one pink, for her daughters. The girls, now 8 and 12, wore them constantly and even got charms to decorate the tops. This year, the shoes are forgotten.

"They were their go-to," Fisher said, "and now they're just really interested in flip-flops."

The story of Crocs mirrors the country's tale of economic expansion and contraction. At the height of the real estate market, in 2006, the company sold shares to the public, raising more than $200 million in the biggest stock offering in shoe history. It ramped up manufacturing to keep up with demand, only to then find that shoppers were snapping their wallets shut.

Ha! I was just about to post this! At least there will be some good clearance deals for all those Crocs lovers out there!

I better take a picture of mine and my kids to put in the scrapbook.....

I saw LL Bean's version of CROCS in one of the Bean clearance fliers LAST YEAR = $9.95 Woo Hoo!! :woohoo: So I bought navy blue to try them out...LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Went back to Bean's website and bought pink and lime green....so for the price of one pair of real CROCS I was able to snag THREE Bean Crocs. AND they are COMFY....not the KMart, WAL-Mart, Target type hard plastic knock-off!!! I have Crocs Beach and the Crocs Mammoth but I really like the Bean Crocs ALLOT!!!

I just checked the Bean site...they are STILL $9.95!!! What is even funnier is on the Bean's website, I typed in CROCS in their search box and it took me right to their COASTAL CLOGS!!! :yay:

Thanks for the info!

I just received my 3 pairs from Surf & Dirt. I love the Adarna for the summer & WDW.

I feel bad for all the nurses that depend on them:confused3

DD just got her first pair of Mickey Crocs and loves them so much she wants to wear them to bed. She's 2! What now?!?

Oh no, my Crocs may be disappearing :sad1:

For us that love them, this is terrible news. Good things I have lots of pairs and they last a long time, but I will stock up if they do go out.

I don't think they will go completely out of business. I think they just expanded too much with the different styles and all. I know several people just in my small town that wear nothing but Crocs, and I am almost in that category. If I hear for sure they are going out of business, I will buy about 20 pairs to last me awhile, LOL

Man, those shoes look bad with EVERYTHING. I never understood why injection molded plastic shoes from china cost $30 anyway. I guess people finally got smart.

Ah, but they FEEL so good, LOL. I used to think they were ugly, but they are so comfortable that now I think they are beautiful.;) Comfort is more important to me than fashion at this point in my life.

I think their flip flop is the most comfy on the market - I got some new ones via ShoeBuy.com just yesterday. I guess I had better stock up. They are a one summer shoe and I usually get 2 pairs every summer since the bottoms wear out quickly but I absolutly love them. (I don't like the shoe's I do not think they are as comfy as the flip flops which have a much thicker heel)

My DS works for a sporting goods store and they have been unable to get their Crocs orders. They finally gave up

They don't look any worse than "regular" nursing shoes. Those things are SERIOUSLY butt-ugly! At least crocs come in cool colors. And they are the ONLY shoes that keep me from having not only aching feet at the end of the day but waking up in the night with painful leg cramps after working 12-14 hours. I will be stocking up! :thumbsup2

Does anyone else think that the demise of the Crocs brand really didn't have all that much to do with the declining economy? I think they got so popular, so fast, that all of a sudden everyone had them, and tons and tons of knock offs were being made, and Crocs were just everywhere? Just like any "fad", which is what I consider Crocs to be, they peak in popularity, and then die out. Kind of like Beanie Babies...you can't give those away now, and that had nothing to do with a good or bad economy.

Or am I way over thinking this? :lmao:

I just don't think this can be totally blamed on the economy.

I think the bad economy gets blamed for a lot of bad business decisions.

Man I hate those shoes, they are so butt ugly, I hate hearing of any company going under in todays environment.

last I read Crocs income was down 1.85 million from 800 million, yearly.

I'm not good at looking up that kind of info... or I would. Hehehehehe

This. I have 3 pairs in pink/green, orange/pink, and red/white. I better load up on the colors I want soon! :sad1:

Maybe the actual Crocs brand will be gone or bought by someone else, but the style will stay around as every company seems to have their own line now.

I personally don't wear them so I don't care but if there is demand for the product someone will meet the demand. It might be that Crocs has inefficient manufacturing or a poor business model or just over expanded. It might be that the cheap knock offs are good enough and the $25 premium they were charging wasn't worth it to the consumer.

Like a PP stated, places like LL Bean can fill the void if Crocs go under. I think those of you who want Crocs will be able to find a Croc-like alternative as long as there is enough demand to sustain someone supplying them.

I have tried several of the knock-offs and they are NOT the same, not even close. If Crocs goes under, I will definitely stock up on them.
