If you have your car, should you use bus or drive?

And let's not forget that when waiting for a bus, you may have been the first one waiting but people will try to get on before you. The bus may stop before or after where you are waiting, and people will rush to get in front of you. Look what happened here:

Your car is just more comfortable, plain and simple.

We're flying and taking the Magical Express from the airport, so we have no choice. Luckily we're staying at BLT and can take the monorail to our 2 favorite parks.

2 more considerations (I have mentioned these before, but not on this thread, and I don't see them posted) ...

- if the driver enjoys adult beverages, you might want to take a bus ;)
- if your party might want to split up (e.g., my DH can only take about 1/2 day of parks, while DD and I can go on and on like the battery bunny), you might want to take a bus :confused3

We like the busses! Granted we've never driven but me and DH both commented that we didn't care if we had to wait a little bit it was so nice not having to worry about driving and traffic and just relax. Most of the time our waits were 5 minutes or less and maybe a couple of times around 15 minutes. To us it was still better than driving. Also like someone else said if you have to split up, which we did a few times when DS got sick, someone would have had to take the bus anyway. Certainly never experienced anything crazy like on that video.

You already have enough to go on, but I can't resist. . .

CAR! Driving in Orlando is cake.

We view Disney Transportation as "rides" for "the fun of it" (which is only mid day and no one's around). We don't use them with the attention of getting somewhere the way we want to.

(Side note: if you're staying at Poly, then I could see the case for not using a car).

The busses are a pain, often slow, requiring sometimes multiple transfer points. We have kiddos and busses, to me, aren't safe. I've been on busses before making sever sudden stops (because of poor car drivers :-( ), watching littles fly forward. No fault of the driver, just the reality of no seat belts.

The monorail never seems to run on time. The boats are nice, but that's not transportation to me, that's a ride.

Most importantly, Driving can save huge money! We started driving seven years ago and now, not only do we appreciate the flexibility and ease of driving everywhere, but we no longer stay on site because it's just too easy to drive and the lodging off site can be so much better for the money. Furthermore, we can now go offsite, explore usually much better dining options at lower costs, and simply have a lot more fun and flexibility.

Cheers!

Not sure if this has been mentioned but we drive to the parks early for ropedrop. We usually get the front row parking spot. When we take a midday break, we take the bus back to the resort. We hop back on the bus after our naps and go back to the park. Our car stays in the front row and it is a short walk back at the end of the night.

We rent a car when we go and drive to all parks, even MK. We've only stayed a All-Star Music but at the All-Stars you can park close to your room. We were there in Oct and could park about 50ft from our room.

MK can be an effort as you need to take the extra step of monorail or ferry.

I don't like doing the drive of shame as you are waved down to start a new row.

This happened to us at MK. We were waiting to park and trying to figure out if we would make the end of the row nearest the tram. We thought we would and my DD said "yes!" For whatever reason, they dropped a cone in the last spot and waved us all the way down to the end of the new row. My DD threw her hands in the air and yelled "noooo!!!"

Great idea

I think it depends on your personality type.

I take buses 99% of the time. I am laid back, I plan for extra time even if I won't need it, and the more others get frustrated and pissed off the more I tend to remind myself that I do NOT want others to see me act that way. (doesn't always work but I try) Plus I rent a car, and on vacations where I'm somewhere without a car I plan to have some cab fare for those times I won't have the patience for buses.

If you are the type to fluster easily, can not sit back and enjoy the ride, are on time constraints or have a ton of extra stuff to deal with (massive amounts of bags, children, strollers, ect) then yeah buses are probably not going to be the best transportation option for you.

CAR

We've done both and prefer driving our own car. We like the parking trams. Try both and see what you think.

If we have a car, we usually do a mix. But having done both, we often go without a car. Also, don't forget good ol' walking. Sometimes the shortest way to get from point a to point b at WDW is by foot.

A quick answer is ask CM what you should do in each case. Even as a veteran WDW traveler, I find myself asking sometimes when I have to make som unusual transfer. The CM's at WDW rarely steer me wrong. Bell services, and front desk CM's are great.

Often the answer is going to be subjective based on your preferences.

If we have no car, sometimes taxi is the best option. It might even be the best option in a few cases with car.

Generally, going to MK you are best taking WDW transportation, unless you are staying at a large mod and plan to leave at a peak time (just after parade, park closing, just after fireworks).

If monorail is the option, that's usually easiest and fastest. (unless it's late at night)

If you plan on having dinner at a resort, you may be better off driving. If you are eating at one of the Epcot deluxes and going to Ecpot that day - then you are best takign buses/walking from Epcot. If you are pairing MK with an Epcot resort - then the car is best. If you are having dinner at a resort- and using WDW transport to get back would be a two step process- your car is probably easiest. (or a taxi in that one direction)

The car is best for any hop that includes DTD and almost any hop that includes AK.

Anytime that you don't feel like having a designated driver - WDW transport is best. Driving also requires navigation. If you don't know your way around WDW, then sometimes the bus is better. Turns are marked, but it is easy to miss a turn. Some turns are not well marked - particuarly if you are trying to drive to a hotel. Miss a turn, and it might cost you 20minutes to loop around WDW. If you don't have a GPS, and aren't good at navigating, WDW tranport might be best. It's subjective, often driving is faster and you have control - but it's easy to sit and chat while waiting for a bus. Riding a bus can be relaxing. While you are onthe bus, you can use that time to take care of some things. A car may give you more privacy. But often taking the bus directly from one place to another is going to take slightly longer than driving, since you have to wait for the bus. but that also depends on where you park. Sometimes it's a hike to he resort parking lot (GF).

Weather is also always a factor, and how well you cope with traffic. WDW also has FREQUENT speed traps. Speeding tickets and DUI's can be a real downer. WDW has guests from all over the country and all over the world (many in unfamiliar rental cars). You'll see some really moronic driving in Orlando! Half the drivers leaving MCO don't know how to roll down the window when they get to the toll booth! The other half are local drivers who are annoyed by the morons...:lmao:

There's also the idea of bringing stuff. With a car you can have stuff inthe trunk. A car means you have to use carseats and seatbelts. Disney buses are VERY clean, but you will see other guests. Sometimes other guests and Bus drivers are WONDERFUL, other times guests can be rude. To me, Disney buses are much nicer than real world buses, but they are still basically public transportation. There's always a good chance the bus will be standing room only; a car has guaranteed seating. but you also have to find your car in a VERY large parking lot, and if you want to hop between parks - getting to your car might not be fastest. Once we went to HS and hopped to Epcot. We left the car at HS. At the end of hte night, half of us took the bus (faster) and half of us went back to the car (slower).

The last couple of times we have driven to WDW and we mostly use the buses. If there's an early ADR or we are at our resort and need to get to a different resort or DTD, we drive.

The buses may have their issues, but I will take that most times over driving ourselves, parking, getting to the entrance, blahhhhhhh

Have fun!

I'm going to move this to our transportation board.

I also wanted to add a little about DTD. There is a thread going around about the terrible bus service from all resorts to DTD. I know the last few times we have been to DTD we drove, but finding a parking place was terrible. We drove around forever before we finally found one. So I don't know which is worse, taking a chance on bad bus service or driving around trying to find a parking space.

A big part of why I mentioned DTD is that if you dine at a resort, and finish your dinner after som parks have closed - then to get back to your resort using buses - you often have to do a two step process. you have to take one bus to DTD, and transfer to a bus that goes back to your resort. they do this because DTD buses run late, but DTD is at the far end of property (plus lots of traffic lights) and daytime DTD buses also stop at the waterpark (I forget which one). This two step process is aways horrible, especially late at night when you're tired. A car or taxi is WAY easier.

Still others have raised an excellent point - if they haven't stressed it - The answer often depends quite a bit on the specifics of where you are staying.

It's often quite a bit easier to go between certain deluxes via WDW transport or walking than it is to take a car. It's also very easy to walk between the three All Stars. POR and POFQ boat is best to DTD.

Otherwise, at mods and values, for example - driving may be better. At most values and mods you can reliably park close to your room, often in the same spot. At some deluxes, your car is farther form your room than the bus stop, and you will park in a rather different spot each time. Remembering where you parked is a factor.

I also always say time is money- esp when you are on vacation. You are likely paying over $25 per waking hour to be at WDW. I hold that if something costs you half an hour to 'save' $5 - it's not really saving you anything; it's COSTING you $10 of wasted vacation time. So added time is a factor....then again, gas is not free either.

I stayed onsite for the first time in Dec 2009. This was my first experience with the busses and monorail.

I personally hated it and will not go back to WDW without a rental car. When you go to a theme park, you expect to wait in lines, masses of people, cranky, crying children, etc. But the whole bus/monorail experience just added that experience to the beginning and ending of your day instead of the quiet, comfortable drive in a car.

I felt that waiting in line for busses (sometimes 20-30 minutes) as well as the length of time loading with the wheelchair/scooters and the crush getting on as well as actually on the bus really took away from my enjoyment of the trip.

I am a person that really likes my "personal space" and many times you were smashed into the bus with too many people, scooters and strollers for my comfort.

I was always leary of driving to MK until we stayed offsite and had to do it. It's easy...if you're a ropedrop person. We are, so we always got an up close parking spot. And I LOVE taking the ferry from TTC to the park, it is a great start to the day.

We also take afternoon breaks and used our car. We always seem to find a better parking spot when we came back. That is true for all 4 parks. One night at Epcot we were in the first row. I was amazed at how fast we were out of there after Illuminations.

All you can do is try it.

we use both. We drive in the morning, take the bus to go back to the resort for the afternoon and at the end of the day drive back to the resort. Since we do rope drop, our car is always closeto the entrance/exit and when everyone is cranky at the end of the day, the car is just there!

Since these are not technically transferable has anyone had an issue using one they bought off of Ebay?

To get to the parks and water parks, take the Disney transportation. It's much easier and less of a hassle at the end of a busy day. To get between resorts, take the car since there is usually no direct transportation between resorts. (A transfer is needed at a park or DD.)
