This week is teacher appreciation week. I didnt think anything about it since my DS is only 5 months old and is in daycare - not school. But one of the parents brought in a cake the other day and I just wondered if its common to give daycare teachers gifts during this week? I wasnt going to but then I decided to get some candy (kisses and hershey minis) and put them in a container with a note attached that said thank you for taking care of me and signed by my son. Did anyone else give a gift?

Didn't know it was that this week. We had teacher appreciation day in April at DS's daycare. I made a cake for all and thanked them. They should be thanked each day, IMO. They have a very tough job. Gotta love teachers :cool1:

I gave my dd preschool teachers presents on childcare provider day -- it was on April 8th - the friday of the week of the young child.

I gave them just a little something, travel mugs and their favorite drink, one drinks tea, one coffee, one mountain dew, and a cookie tray. My girls drew pictures and we wrote a note thanking them for everything they do for all the children that they teach.

I think it is so important to let the teachers of little ones know how much we appreciate them. It is most times a low-pay, high stress job and the ones who are good at it are worth a million.

We had it at school this week....I sent in little gifts all week. :) It was fun, and a nice way to appreciate the teachers.

Speaking for the other side of the fence ;) I am a preschool teacher. Our private school is not considered a day care but a licensed school. Our parents actually brought in a "potluck' lunch for us one day. They set up a very pretty area for us to have lunch while two parents from each class sat with our class for an hour..giving us that break. I also got some small gifts.

You have no idea how much it means to us.. just a small candle with a thoughtful card is enough to make me tear up. I am not in the profession for the money. I could make twice what I do at our private church school by starting my own in-home daycare, but I love to teach. I don't take it for granted. To me it is an incredible honor when a parent trusts me with what is most important in their life... their precious child.

Daycare/preschool teachers are making a salary that is true, but just like teachers in the public schools, we usually have a very tight classroom budget and often put alot of our own money into our classrooms.

I am not asking your or even trying to insinuate you should buy your small childs teacher a gift.. only do so if it is in your heart. I am just letting you know that we do appreciate your thoughtfullness more than you could ever imagine... and it isn't the gift that is given, but the love and caring behind it.

i work in a day care center...the PTO sponsered a lunch for us, and parents came and watched the children during their lunch and nap times, so us teachers could take an extra break and relax...some parents did bring us things, such as flwoers and candles..

I also teach pre-K in a licensed, private school and not one person did anything the whole week, not even a single thank you. :( Not even from our director who knew it was teacher appreciation week. :sad1:

I don't believe these things are well publicized and aren't known typically; however, today (Friday before Mother's day) is National Provider's Appreciation day. I guess it's tied to Mother's day because the provider acts as a "sub" for moms while they work. Please don't read anything into that - I don't for even half a second believe I'm a substitute mom for my daycare kiddos but a simple thanks now and then is nice.
