I posted this on the Budget Board, but also thought this is a good place to post:

I want to make sure I credit this to the Slickdeals board. I had some miles I would never use at Northwest and someone on Slickdeals posted you could get certain gift cards, etc by shopping through their the Delta Marketplace. Long story short, I combined by Delta and Northwest airmiles and purchased a $100 LongHorn restaurant gift card for only airmiles. There is no tax and shipping is free. I wasn't going to use the miles anyway, so a great use for them.

I did the same type of thing with my wife's AA miles a year or so ago. They offered magazine subscriptions using miles, so I did it. She never flies AA and so her miles were going to expire.

Shame on you people ;)

What she means is that it is a shocking waste of miles - using miles for anything but airline travel (at the base levels) is not good use of the miles.

Now, if you have 11,000 Lufthansa Miles and More miles and will never ever ever fly Star Alliance again, and want to trade them in for a seriously overpriced Sacher Torte, go ahead.

But it isn't definitely isn't a good exchange rate! :)

I was well aware of that.... and that is exactly why I used my wifes miles for mags... she NEVER flies AA. The only reason she did fly AA is because they were the cheapest to California one year. She always wants to fly non-stop to MCO, so AA is basically out. Now, I would NEVER, EVER use my own miles that way. I am going to fly as many times as I can...

Now, leave me alone, you meanies! I am telling mom! MOM! Bavaria and EPSG are being mean to me! :yay:

:snooty:

it was so good I had to say it twice... with apologies to the OP

:snooty: now if you hadn't run away scared from the Budget Board you would have discovered how to order free magazine subscriptions. They probably even have Bowlers Fanatics or Balls Balls Balls or whatever your bowling magazines are called.

Mrs Duds' miles could have been saved for something more valuable.

And Mom can't hear you - she is ignoring us because she is busy riding Space Mountain while screaming the lyrics to It's a Small World at the top of her lungs.

I will see Mom probably tomorrow. Anything you want me to tell her? :)

Mom, they aren't playing nice with me. :)

Uh oh, a meeting of the Moms. Tell her that I will bring her the good chocolate when I come to visit in cold, frozen January. :rolleyes1

And tell her that her favourite posters have been behaving during her absence!

Again, apologies to the OP, but Duds started it!

I nearly spewed my airborne-laced hot tea all over my screen... Balls Balls Balls, indeed....

:lmao:

You used 17,000 miles for a $100 gift card??

I can understand you had extra miles you were not able to use but did you know you can earn miles in other ways besides flying?

Just as a future reference the airline will directly sell you miles at $0.025 per mile (Delta actually charges $0.028). It's always in your best interest to redeem above that threshold. I personally only redeem for international travel, usually at a rate of $0.15 to $0.25 per mile.
