I'm not sure anybody's mentioned the marina. This was something I missed when I stayed at AKL. I loved AKL, it was great. But I've grown accustomed to a boat ride now and then when I'm staying at a disney resort, whether its one of those mid-sized fsamily boats, or those zippy whateveryoucallems. The AKL lacks a marina.
The other thing, which others have mentioned, is the proximity to the parks and to other resorts. At the poly, you don't just have their restaurants, but all the MK resort restaurants are very close. That's something I really enjoy.
Again, I loved the AKL, but I felt like I was on an island when I was there. If you do stay there, I'd recommend renting a car. But if you're really chosing between the AKL and Poly for your first visit, honestly, I don't think there's a choice. The Poly will give you so much more of the Disney experience. Try the AKL next time.
