If you do a CF diet, how do you supplement?

We've been slowly cutting back on DS's dairy intake to see if it helps with some behaviors at school. So far, so good. If we're able to go totally casein free, what suggestions do you have to replace or supplement the missing nutrients and calcium? I've tried soy, he hated it. He loves yogurt and ice cream so I'm trying to figure out my options. He is a very picky eater.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

You may want to just not offer an alternative for a little while. Right now he'll be comparing what he's tasting to what he used to have. After a few months he'll have kind of forgotten the taste of the regular dairy products and will be more open to alternatives.

Most of the milk alternatives are fortified with calcium, vitamin D and B12.

DD12 likes the Silk Very Vanilla but is finally accepting the regular vanilla as well. The Very Vanilla has extra flavouring plus it's got extra fat and vitamins which are crutial for younger children. DD10 likes rice milk. At first she would only use the unsweetened plain but she's finally accepting regular or vanilla.

For ice cream, their favourite is the coconut based ones by Turtle Mountain called So Delicious. I just today bought the kefir to see if they'd drink that. The yogurts are really yummy and are high in their culture counts so they're effective as probiotics. The chocolate one is more like pudding than yogurt. YUMMY!!

Dark leafy greens are a great source of calcium but I'm guessing that if he's a picky eater he won't eat these?

My son loves Almond Breeze Vanilla milk, the one in the refridgerated section only, not the one you can buy room temp. He also likes the Silk Almond Dark Chocolate (hates Almond Breeze chocolate).

He takes a very potent multi vitamin by Thorne called Basic Nutrients III and takes a chewable calcium tablet every day. The one we use is by Kirkman labs. He loves them.

Thank you both! I will give it some time then see if I can get him to try those.

And, yep, getting him to eat dark greens is close to impossible but I'm still working on it. Surprisingly, he loves salad so I've been sneaking things in there slowly. ;)

I keep a bag of baby spinach in my fridge and I've been increased the spinach to lettuce ratio quite a bit. I also add Kale to a lot of sauces and soups. Finely chopped, it's not very noticable (cut back on the pepper in recipes as you increase kale). Mustard greens I understand are also easy to get into recipes and salads.

FYI: The kefir was NOT a hit with my kids. It has too much of a yogurt texture. If your son likes drinkable yogurts then he may like the So Delicious coconut milk kefir drinks.
