So...a bit of background before the funny part. In 20 days (yippee), we are going to WDW for my kids' first trip. The family is me, my BF celebrating his 60th b-day there, DD 14, DS 15 & 3/4 (or almost 16 as he says). Me and the kids are all pooh sized. I am handicapped and exercise is challenging (not an excuse, just the way it is) but our YMCA finally purchased recumbent bikes that I can maneuver myself onto, with enough handles that I am not too afraid of falling off. So I've been going to the Y 4-5 times a week, sitting & pedalling. I am almost up to 11 minutes. My son seems inspired--all on his own I did not say a word--to try excercising and eating less. Anyway, he's been walking everyday between homework sessions--he comes home, does homework till supper (with a snack of fruit and skim milk), then supper/cleanup, a walk of 30-45 minutes, shower and more homework. (Anyone else having homework nightmares?!) This morning over breakfast, he says to me "Do you think Disney has walking paths so I can keep up with my exercise?" Well, I almost swallowed my tongue trying to keep a straigtht face. I said "It is so awesome that you are working on getting healthier. I'm sure WDW has walking/jogging paths and we'll definately find one for you. But, since we're gonna be WALKING 7-8 MILES A DAY ANYWAY I think you'll be good on the exercise front." So, have they heard nothing I've said about all of the walking at WDW, blah, blah, you all need good sneakers, blah, blah, afternoon rest time, blah, blah? If they think I've been exaggerating wait till they get there! I am sorry for the very long winded story but I thought it was so hilarious that he's worried about not getting enough walking at WDW. Disney where one could walk one's legs off!

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Ahhh... teens never hear what we say.... and they will probably tell you when they get there "You didn't TELL us there would be so much walking!" :lmao:

LOL! Woohoo! You're going in 20 days! I'm so envious! And your first trip, too! Congrats!

You'll walk SO MUCH within the World that sitting down will seem like a treat! Does your son have a pedometer? Maybe you should get him one for Disney World and he can see just how many steps he takes.

Have a wonderful time!! Happy Walking!

Teenagers??!!!????I have a 7yr old who has selective hearing almost to the point of deafness:lmao:

Congratulations on the working out! It's never easy to get started.

And that's awesome that your son took that up on his own. I'm impressed. Maybe you can tell him that he can power walk to some of the rides and you all will catch up! :yay:

Have fun in Disney!

Why didn't I think of a pedometer. What great encouragement for even here at home.

For those of you who think the little ones are a challenge, I say wait for teenagers. You not only become the stupidest person on the planet::"Gee mom, how did you get to 47 without my help"..."Seriously? You're wearing that?" Or my personal favorite response to any suggestion I make from friends to clothes to school to activities to food: "Mom! No. For so many reasons, just no, Mom, no." All while shaking their heads--poor little sad stupid person to be pitied, Mom. In addition, you become the most afraid person becasue the opposite sex, drugs, alcohol, fast cars and all manner of other dangers are lurking in wait for your precious babies.

Too funny!

My husband and I were afraid we would put on weight on vacation, especially with the dining plan, but with all the walking we did we actually lost a few pounds each!

Keep up the awesome work on the bikes, and WTG for your son! It isn't easy getting started, and sometimes you just want to throw in the towel. Have a great trip!

Pedometer is a great idea! I also subscribe to RunningAHEAD (it's free) and you can chart mileage for anyplace in America. I'm training for a 7.5 mile run & have to do a run while in Disney in 2 weeks. I know, lots of walking, why exercise? but running is different and I don't want to get behind.

Anyhow, I went on there and charted a beautiful, sidewalk only running path that goes from Pop Century front door to CBR & all the way around it & back. It was 3 miles exactly. So I'm super excited.

If you wanted to show him how far he'll be walking, just log on to that site & draw 3-4 circles around MK & he'll see right quick how much he'll be walking! Or better yet, Epcot! I always complain that the walk from Test Track to Mexico is a death march. Blazing hot sun & FOREVER!

:thumbsup2 It's so refreshing to hear of a teenager that is self motivated in the exercise department!!! Keep encouraging him!

Have a fabulously magical trip to the world!!

Thank you all so much for the wonderful words of wisdom and encouragement. My son actually seems to like the idea of a pedometer so I'll be shopping tomorrow. God bless him, he has not missed a day walking, and tnight swam for 30 minutes uninterrupted as it's so hot today. I feel so bad for him though because I know he is starving, although he knows that will get a bit better with time. So looking forward to WDW!

I just wanted to say that I'm a Weight Watchers leader & the starving part should go away within 2 weeks. If he's been careful with his eating for longer than two weeks and is still starving, he may not be eating enough. A young boy who is exercising a lot needs quite a few calories. There are online sites to help you figure out how many calories he needs. It'll be almost TWICE what you can eat. Depressing, I know.

Anyway, just putting on my official "WW leader" hat.
