If you call french fries as "chips", do you call potato chips as "fries"?

First I'd like to thank you all for the great responses on my previous question. Now it just comes to my mind about how the British called "american" potato chips.

1. Since you call french fries as chip, are the potato chips known as "fries" in Britain? It'd be so confusing for american and perhaps the rest of the world.

2. On your vacations, have you been misunderstood by ordering "british" chip and got a bag of "american" potato chip instead?

3. Do you call french fries as "chips" so that you don't have to say "french" fries all the times? I assume french fries is a correct, standard name for that type of cooked potato.

Hi disneyrhap!

1. We call potato chips crisps, because they're crisp I guess!

2. Never done this myself. I think most of us are aware of the common language differences and we know to order fries. In fact, most restaurant and fast food menus over here describe them as fries in any case.

3. Chips is short for chipped potatoes. Some say that chipped potatoes were introduced by Belgians and bizzarely, it is they (and not the French) who are well known for their frites or 'french' fries. Strange huh?

...... yes, my son ordered chips and got crisps! He loves crisps though so wasn't bothered!!

If you go to posh reataurants crisps (UK) are sometimes refered to as 'game chips' :)

I think that in most restaurants in the UK 'chips' are refered to as french fries or fries (I think they see the word 'chips' as a bit downmarket :) ).

LOL :teeth:
We had a very confusing conversation when ordering food at one of the counter-service outlets in Epcot. I asked for "fries". The CM said "You guys call our fries 'chips' in the UK don't you?"
"Yes" I replied, "so we have to make sure we remember to ask for 'fries' in the US!"
Guess what we got? - your chips / our crisps! How that happened, I'm still not sure

My 2 youngest just had to have chips / french fries from Harry Ramsdens in Englnd EPcot so they could ask for CHIPS.

WE made a mistake in Mama Melrose in MGM & asked for tomato sauce instead of ketchup. When the kids had waited ages for it to arrive we asked our server where it was. She replied the chef was just fixing it!! So we got fresh tomatoe sauce which tasted lovely & ketchup.
