If you buy an ipad in America what do you do with box

Over the last couple of years we've always carried the item in our hand luggage and then spread the box and bits out across a couple of other peoples hold luggage.

We might have just been lucky, but we always buy so much from Apple when we're over - last time we were in New York, we came back with two iPad's, an iPod touch and a Macbook Pro within our group of 6. But, we've never had any problems!

DS bought 32gb iPad 2 last year which was under the £390 allowance, this year bought the latest, again 32gb but exchange rate not quite as good, made it about £8 over the allowance but we risked it. They never stopped us.
Makes no difference if you have the box or not, if they stop you they can check from the seriel number withing seconds where you bought it and when.

we bought our son one last year and the box went in the suitcase and he carried it in his hand luggage

Is what I did when I got mine a few years back:)

:goodvibes

I purchased a 32Gb in August and dumped my box. I took a leather cover to Orlando with me which I had purchased from Amazon UK for around £5 :goodvibes
The US company that I work for are currently negotiating an employee discount scheme with Apple for UK employees, so I will see what that offers for future purchases.

Stupid question/statement to follow......I don't exactly understand the customs thing allowance wise.......what is the allowance, if you go over it do you say nothing if its only purchases purely for your own use? This is where the frantic taking tags off everything comes into play right?? As I've only been to the states once in 2008 I can't really remember the set up as such?? I don't understand it at all. Please excuse my ignorance any help would be great to clear it up in my head :) :) :)

You have an allowance of £390pp which cannot be combined. So if you buy an item worth £391 or more you are supposed to declare it on arrival back in the UK to pay import duty. It makes no difference if you hide boxes, take tags off electrical items as they can trace every item to purchase date. Things like laptops/ipads have an activation date. They would have no problem with these type of things, other stuff like clothes without tags would be more difficult for them to prove when you bought them.

Bee86 our allowance from Ireland is €430 it's more the New York and Boston flights that they target. Only ever seen a few stopped off Orlando flights they do be out in force for the Ny Boston flights :). I don't go over the allowance so never need to worry.

Thank you so much for your replies! Much more at ease now! Doubt ill be going over the allowance and if I did it would be clothes.....or shoes lol
Yes I knew I had heard a lot about people freaking out but they were defo coming off new York/boston flights! Makes sense thanks Irish eyes!
Brilliant thanks again guys :) :)

Just to be clear, it isn't up to customs to prove that you have exceeded your allowance - YOU have to be able to prove that you are within the allowance. They probably won't be that bothered if you are only slightly over though and so it is probably in your best interests to declare it.
