If we hated Boma's will we hate Marrakesh?

I was so excited about Marrakesh on our last trip and I backed out because we hated Boma's and I was afriad the flavors would be the same.

I hated the fact that everything at Bomas tasted sweetish -cinnamony or coffe-ish. DH just thought the food was of poor quality there, but he is not a big buffet person.

So ... do they use the same flavors and such?

I'd love to try Marrakesh during our upcoming trip but it looks like we can only do one Epcot eatery so I don't want to make a bad decision.

I've never eaten at Boma so I don't really know how their food tastes but there are only a few items on the Marakesh menu that have a sweet/savory flavor mixed. The Beef Brewat Rolls and the Chicken Bastilla are really the only two things I can think of. Well, aside from the desserts. I'd give it a try, there is a lot of good food there.

These are two very different restaurants and cuisines. Marrakesh is Moroccan, Boma presents different "flavours of Africa." Expect to find Middle Eastern and North African cuisine at Marrakesh: couscous, lamb, shish kebob, hummus, etc.

Personally, Marrakesh could stand to be a little MORE adventurous. None of the food will surprise anyone who's eaten Middle Eastern food in a big city.

I like Marrakesh a lot. You might want to stay away from the brewat rolls and bastilla b/c they are slightly savory meat rolls covered with cinnamon. I love them, but then my favorite thing at Boma is the curried chicken soup -- definitely a sweet and savory flavor.

I didn't care for either Boma or Marrakesh and thought that they were a lot alike. But, if it's your birthday trip and you want to eat there, by all means do...if your DH doesn't like it at least he'll like the bellydancer. I would just hate to eat my only WS meal there and would prefer Le Cellier. JMO

We loved both Marrakesh and Boma, but we didn't think they were too much alike. But as other posters have noted, at Marrakesh you might want to stay away from the Brewat rolls, as they are the savory cinnammon dishes that you don't like. Maybe there are others, but those are the only ones that I remember. Yay birthday dinners!

I would recommend that you not try Marrakesh, if you did not like Boma. While Boma samples a wide variety of African cuisines, the flavors you did not like, the "sweetish -cinnamony or coffe-ish" flavors, sound like North African (including Moroccan) cuisine. Nutmeg, cinnamon, raisins and citrus are very important flavors in North African cuisine, especially in the meat and fish dishes, so I expect you will not enjoy it. I love both Boma and Marrakesh, and have Moroccan friends who have instructed me in the cuisine, but it's definately not for everyone. To each his/her own tastes, right?

Maybe next time you are at Boma, you should sample the Eastern or Southern African styles, as these are quite different from North African flavors whcih you seems to get most of the last time you were there.

You might want to consider giving the Tangierine Cafe a try instead. It is the counter service restaurant in Morrocco.

I have eaten at Marrakesh and thought the food was okay but nothing that would bring me back for more (especially because of the price). The Tangierine Cafe, however, is my favorite restaurant in WDW. You will still get "authentic" Morroccan cuisine, however it will be much less expensive. I always get the lamb shawarma platter and have never noticed a cinnamon or coffee like flavor in any of the items on the platter. I do remember that many of the items at Marrakesh had a sweet or cinnamon flavor. I also remember that everything seemed very dried out to me.

If you are just wanting to give Morroccan food a try, the Tangierine Cafe may be a better option for you. And in case you don't like the food, you will only be out about $10 as opposed to $50 at Marrakesh! If you do like the Tangierine Cafe, then you could consider giving Marrakesh a try just stay away from the items the other posters have mentioned that have a sweeter flavor.

I don't like to be negative, but my family HATED Marrakesh. We're not picky eaters, but none of us had a meal we were happy with. We also thought our server was rude, and the restaurant was eerily empty, which made us uncomfortable.

We walked out of there feeling like we had just wasted $60 and worse, an opportunity to eat an another of the WS restaurants. I agree with Jennymouse, if you only have one meal to eat at WS, I would stay away from Marrakesh.

Marrakesh is one of our favorites - we were not fond of Boma.

But the brewat rolls are a favorite of ours - and I'm a huge fan of "sweet" meats - chicken and currant type dishes.


As I recall, not everything on the Marrakesh menu has the sweet savory flavor, but certainly some of it does.

Didn't eat at Boma's (though I considered it), but I ate lunch at Marrakesh and loved it. I had the chicken Coucous and thought it was delicious. I do love cinnamon and while I prefer is in sweets, I don't mind it in savory dishes either. I don't recall the taste of cinnamon in this meal at all, though. It was 2 chicken breasts (on the smaller side), lots of veggies and enough couscous for 3 people. On the other hand I didn't care for the Tangierine Cafe at all--thought the chicken shwarma was really dry and I didn't like the tangierine flavored couscous or the veggies there. I also loved the iced green mint tea they had.

Honestly, I haven't eaten at Boma, but I would bet that you wouldn't enjoy Moroccan food either if you don't enjoy the sweet twists on things... I do remember things being a little sweet. As much as I LOVE Marrakesh, I'd hate for you to drop money on something that you didn't enjoy, and that it get bad reviews! LOL

I agree that trying the Tangerine Cafe will be a safer bet, plus you can just be honest with the CM and ask them what to recommend if you want to try out the Moroccan food without risking it...

I've got to say that IMO Tangierine Cafe is not in the same league as Marrakesh. We found the food there to be bland and not real good. The baklava is excellent, though.

Maybe you could just try Marrakesh for lunch as another post did (less expensive) or check out the menu on allearsnet to see whether there is a sampler platter that you could share. You could also just go & have appetizers/dessert & watch the bellydancing!

I really like both restaurants, but I'm guessing that if you didn't find dishes you liked on that big buffet at Boma, you have an even greater chance of disliking your order at Marrakesh. Especially if you're going for a birthday meal, you might want to play it a bit safe, IMHO.

I hate to say this, as I was hoping I would love Marakesh. My two teen boys, my husband and I went in 2002. Hated the place. It was fairly empty. There wasn't enough food on the portions served, and it just wasn't very good. We loved Le Cellier, that was a favorite right up there with The California Grill. We plan on returning this time. My boys did enjoy the belly dancer, but it wasn't enough to make it a favorite. Good luck with whatever you chose.

We enjoyed Marrakesh very much, but really disliked the outdoor Tangier Cafe. In fact, we were dissappointed enough on our first trip, that we decided NOT to do Marrakesh. The following year, we figured "what the heck", so we tried lunch at Marrakesh, and were pleasantly surprised. Perhaps you can go in just for appetizers or dessert? That's what we usually do when we're unsure of spending $$$ on a restaurant we're unsure of. The place was packed when we went, and we enjoyed the ambience enough. There's no shortage of Italian, Chinese and Mexican restaurants where we live, so we really liked that it was just different. Good luck deciding!
