If two small planes started buzzing your neighborhood...

what would your thoughts turn to? Tonight around 7pm, I was on the phone and start hearing these planes sounding very close. After a few minutes, I went outside and my neighbor was out watching as well. She had no idea what was going on either. The person on the phone could hear them as she lives about a mile from me. It looked like planes were practicing for an air show. No promotion had been made of an air show, so I decided to call 911. The person I talked to said she had no knowledge of this until she came into work and that the Andretti's were having a private air show. They live about 1/4 mile from us. She said they were getting tons of complaints.

In this day of terrorist activity, I feel our neighbors could have handled their entertainment plans with more concern for the rest of us that live nearby.

Was this an over reaction on my part?

No, I don't think so at all. I live right outside of a military base and tonight I heard several choppers flying overhead. I figured it was from the base, but everytime I hear alot of them I always think the same thing you did.

I would go read to a bunch of grade schoolers, j/k Im a Bush man

BTW, this is the racing Andretti's that I'm talking about... so surely they could have gotten the word out... somehow!!!

I don't think you over reacted in wanting to know what was going on. But expecting them to notify you first is pushing it a little!

Not to make light of your situation, but this reminds me.............one morning DH and I went for our walk and saw a plane circling very close to the ground, and when we got to the end of the road a police car was blocking it. I'm thinking a runaway criminal or something......

Nope.........a Rhino had escaped from the nearby small local zoo!

missyc, what I meant by notification was an ad in one of the two hometown papers we have around here... they reach a limited area.

I think notification is reasonable. Occasionally I read in the paper that someone nearby is having a private fireworks show and they give the time and approx. location (like "in the Manchester area"). I always appreciate knowing and I'm sure it save 911 some calls.

I still run out to see if I hear planes. We're in a no-fly zone (military only) so it is rare to hear them.

I live on a base's flight path so I usually think it's the base

we live in a small city in WI....we never have planes( or i never noticed) the closest major AP is 45 mins away, we have a county airport for the suits...but there have been so many planes around latley also ( PGA was here 2 weeks ago so that contributed some ) but when i hear the BIG ones....( like military etc,- which also has been quite often) we run out to see whats up. last summer we had 2 sleaths(sp?) go over.....they did give advance warning for that because i am sure people would have freaked if they did not know they were coming.

Misty89--did you mean Stealths? Weren't they the creepiest planes you ever saw? Remind me of a UFO!

JayBee: a rhino escaped in a plane?

;)

Actually, I used to live in a town that had a pilot training program for a small airline so we had small planes going over all the livelong day. I would never have thought twice about it but I can understand being concerned if it's not a regular occurrence.

Do you live in Bucks County? I heard the same thing last night. We get jets buzzing by occasionally. If I saw planes flying back and forth, I would probably wonder what was going on also.

I see and hear it all the time.
There is a commuter airport that the military uses on occasion

I remember in 2001, it was the end of Sept., our local college set off a bundh of big fireworks. We live a couple of miles from there & heard a bunch of booms. I freaked, called 911 & they told me what was going on and that they had gotten other calls as well. I feel like they should have informed the town, especially since it was only a week or so after 9/11.

It wouldn't concern me UNLESS I lived in a highly populated area say New York City, Washington DC, or some other big city. If I was living in the sticks or in the suburbs I wouldn't think twice. Of course I live in the flight path of an air force base and I work at an aiport.

Kallison... we live in Nazareth which is in Northampton County. DH works in Bucks (Warminister) and I'm not sure how far out he was, but he saw the planes on the way home.

The 'event' even made the newspaper citing the number of calls received at the 911 ops center.

Not overreacting at all. I live on the flight path to DFW airport and when I hear unusual sounds, i.e., planes flying lower than usual I always go outside and look, just to make sure. You can't be too careful nowadays.

Before 9/11 I never thought much about the planes, helicopters, etc that flew overhead. We are on one of the flight paths for the Willow Grove air base - just not one used daily. Occasionally we'd hear a helicopter really low & our first thought was "I wonder where the accident was?"

Now, we're more likely to go outside & look up...."just to see". Now, I don't live in fear - it just "gives me pause" I guess. If it was 2 small planes (& not the Blue Angles) and they were buzzing the neighborhood, I'd probably call the police.

I often think about how our reactions are different since 9/11. Those first days post 9/11 were eerily silent with no air traffic. In a way I think it made all air traffic since then more noticable.
