I was considering spending 1 day at universal before our cruise. (DCL of course!) We would stay on site so we could use the FOTL passes. But, I don't really know what is at Universal... DD 7 and DS 11. I doubt we would go on any big coasters. so... is there enough to do that is kid type rides and shows... or should I look for a different diversion before our cruise?

bumping cause I'm curious about the responses.

I do know my neighbors went and loved it, and their kids were 4 & 6 at the time. No roller coasters for them .

you're under the preconceived notion that Universal is an amusement park like Six Flags, laden with roller coasters.

If you are into the movies featured at US it is definitely worth it; Twister (you stand); Earthquake; ET (ride on a bike - very slowly); Men in Black; Terminator 2 (in a theatre) the only roller coaster ride there is the Mummy; there is more than enough there to enjoy. :thumbsup2 I loved Jimmy Neutron simulator; there is plenty for the kids.

Yes, Especially since on the Universal Resort board someone wrote that you really must love rollercoasters to enjoy Universal. That is why I came here to check and ask. Thanks for the kind and helpful reply.

Thanks for the info. We have seen a few of the movies, but not all. Kids were too little. Maybe now would be a good time to watch them. :thumbsup2

Which would be better with younger kids... Islands of Adventure or Universal?

Dont worry, theres tons to do. Theres only a couple of roller coasters anyway. (You might surprise yourself and like them, they are too cool). Ive been taking my son since he was 5 and he loves it. If you only have 1 day you might want to do US and save IOA for your next trip (which your kids will be begging you to take) :hippie:

I agree; I would start with US; IOA has a lot more "thrill" rides than US does. US has a good mix; a good show that isn't mentioned much is the Horror Make-up show. A great place to eat at US is Lombard's Landing. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the info on spending the day at US and not IOA. I'll have to research some more... what fun planning a trip!

That's what their website is for.

McBean's reply actually was helpful. It let you know that a little research never hurt anyone. (And that you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet.)

I don't do coasters, and I LOVE Universal! However, I do really enjoy all the movies that the non-coaster rides are affiliated with. There's plenty of rides for us non-coaster people. I think there's more to do for us at USO than MGM.

There's Shrek 4-D, Twister, Jaws, Earthquake, Men in Black, ET and Terminator. All non-coaster/thrill rides. There's a Back to the Future ride, but I find it like a very rough Star Tours ride. The shows are really cool (Animal Planet and Fear Factor...there's more, but those are the ones I've been to). The dining, park atmosphere and shopping is all really awesome. There's also cocktail/beer places everywhere if that interests you and you're not driving. It always seems to me that nine out of ten people are walking around with a beer...just a "party" atmosphere, I suppose.

On a side note, I really enjoy IOA, too. There's plenty to enjoy for non-coaster folks. I'm able to go on a ride in every area. Plus the beauty of that park and the music with each area really hits home for me :)

I think you'll have a great time!

Thanks PlutoLuvr, I know my kids would love Shreck, and the shows would be pretty cool too. It is great to hear that you love US even though you don't do roller coasters. It is a lot of money to spend to stay onsite and get passes for just 1 day, I just want to make sure that it would be a good fit for our family.

You're very welcome, Princess :) Hope y'all enjoy yourselves as much as our family does. My mom's favorite ride there is Shrek, and she doesn't care too much for the Shrek movies...but she does the ride at least a couple times and just loves it.

If you've got the time, there's some very nice shopping at CityWalk, in addition to dining. Definitely worth exploring a little if you've got time in the evening. Even some of the restaurants have nifty stores attached...not "USO" stuff, necessarily, either -- although there's plenty of USO gear, too. One of my favorite stores is on the upper level, close to a cigar place and the movie theater, and I think it's called something like Dippy Dap. I bought a giant purse there years ago for $14 that I still get comments on, and it's held up extremely well. They also have fun t-shirts, lights, clocks and other off-the-wall stuff.

Have fun :thumbsup2

Your children will also love the Curious George Playland. (The adults love it too). But wear bathing suits because you can get drenched. Lots of water cannons, giant buckets of water dumping, and a huge two story ball pit type area where they can get into all kinds of "ball wars."

F-L-A and McBean are giving you a hard time, Princess, but they mean well.

Many people do not go to the Universal website to get some basic answers about the parks.

There are two coasters at IOA: Hulk & Dueling Dragons. USF has ROTM.

That's it!

I don't like roller coasters either. I think US is more laid back and family oriented when it comes to rides. There are alot of rides you can go on as a family, not excluding the little ones and the scardey cats.

IOA is awesome, but, it has alot more thrill rides for those who enjoy that sort of thing. My dh and ds love every roller coaster there is, so we do both.

DM, DM, Flying Unicorn is also a coaster (a family coaster) and then there is the baby coaster in the Curious George area.

We arrive Thursday 6/22 Vija. Any chance that we can plan a time/place to meet up on Thursday or Friday? Maybe Dinner at Universal Thursday?
