if someone wanted to visit your area what would you tell them not to miss?

Northwestern Montana

Glacier National Park - of course!
Conrad Mansion - beautiful historic home built by one of our town's founders
Flathead Lake - largest freshwater (not man-made) lake west of the Great Lakes
Whitefish Mountain Resort if you're here in the winter... great skiing! Also zip lines and alpine slides and hiking and mountain biking in the summer.
We have lots and lots of lakes and rivers and streams.. great fishing, boating and swimming.

That's about it, really... we have museums and a Summer Theater playhouse, but most people have things like that only bigger and better where they come from. :upsidedow

Statue of Liberty
Empire State Building
Central Park
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Seven Lakes Drive
"Real" Italian food
Broadway Show
Cafe de Artiste
Lincoln Center Performance
Walking tour of SoHo
Grand Central Station
Top of the Rock
Sylvia's for Soul Food

PARTIAL
I'm in Michigan so I'd tell them to visit The Henry Ford, a complex of wonderful museums including the Henry Ford museum, Greenfield Village (a village of homes and buildings from various historical periods restored and staffed with costumed interpreters), and the Rouge Factory tour.

I'd also suggest a day trip to Frankenmuth, a kitchy Bavaian-styled town up in the thumb.

We live close to MI and I have to agree, I love both these places. We are members of the HFM & GV and were just there this weekend. It is worth a trip to Dearborn just to go there.

When in Frankenmuth we also have to stop at Bronner's Christmas store - so fun.

In the Toledo, OH, area, we have a world class art museums, The Toledo Museum of Art and one of the best zoos in the country.

If you visit during spring or summer, seeing the Mudhens, our AA baseball team, is a must.

We also have some beautiful parks including the Providence Metropark & The Canal.

There is so much to do here, I would encourage anyone in the area to visit NE Ohio.

PS: Great thread, OP!

The freeway exit? :lmao: Hey, they don't call us SLOcala, FL for nuthin'!

We are the "horse capital of the world" and I drive an extra mile to work on the "back roads" so I can pass seven thoroughbred horse farms in a 6 mile stretch.

Having lived in suburban Detroit my whole life, I find it relaxing to see early morning racehorse workouts or a pasture full of foals. :goodvibes

Ohhh...and there's this place called...Disney World (?)...about 90 miles south.;)

Well Dh and I live in Northwest Wa State and we went whale watching today. It was awesome. We followed a family group of 4 Orcas for about 2 1/2 hrs and saw them hunting, killing and eating a Seal. It was really intense and awe inspiring. We also saw a Minke Whale and lots of Stellar Sealions and Harbour Seals plus just had a great 5 hr boatride around the San Juan Islands.

Great idea for a thread! Thanks.:)

There is so much to see and do in our area.

The Hamptons
Montauk
Fire Island
Wineries
Catch a concert at Jones Beach
Eat some bagels!
Dinosaur Walk Museum
Local Playhouse
Adventureland
Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium
Old Bethpage Village Restoration
Oyster Bay Refuge
Stony Brook Mill Pond
St James General Store
Splish Splash Water Park
Robert Moses Beach
Mattituck Strawberry Festival

You forgot to add a short trip to JumboLair to see John Travolta's plane parked in his front yard!

In my town, you have to walk the London Bridge! Yup... right in Arizona!
Start on the "main"land and walk to the island. We had to dig an island to make the bridge fit.:rotfl:
Next would be Oatman. An old gold mine town. Still very quarky and has tons of wild burrors wandering the town that you can feed.
Lots of real excitment around my neck of the woods... I mean cactus!

Ann :yay:

First and foremost would be our lake, Raystown Lake. We have the biggest man made lake in the state and are home to the biggest marina in the state (there are actually 2 marina's and many places to dock), but 7 Points is the biggest. The lake is 30 miles long and has 118 miles of shoreline. We are a tourist destination in summer months for those who either prefer our lake to the Chesapeake Bay, or for those that live closer to the lake than the bay.

That is a wonderful lake. We used to go to Raystown every Sunday in the summer. Tatman's Run:love:!!!! We would unload our Waverunner and head out to a cove to meet our friends. DH's job hours changed, now he works 2 Sundays and then 1 off:sad1:. We were there this past Sunday. I really miss going every weekend.

I would also send people to.....
Gettysburg Battlefield
Antietam Battlefield
Baltimore (Inner Harbor, Aquarium, zoo, etc.)
Washington DC (all the Smithsonian museums, zoo, restaurants, White House, Capital, Mount Vernon, etc.)

What about Tony Packo's? I have a friend from the Toledo area and he is always talking about it.

We always take people to Kejimikujik National Park, not just a camping area but it also has hiking trails -- it's a beautiful one hour drive to get there from where we live. For those who want to brave it, you can do backcountry camping by canoe or on foot and each campsite is a mile apart.

For those that prefer less strenuous activities, I'd send them to Lunenburg, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see the historic architecture. And although it's not my thing, a lot of people like to visit the Fairview Cemetary in Halifax to see the graves of people lost in the Titanic -- the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in downtown Halifax has a permanent display, with many artifacts that washed up on our shores.

Also, I highly recommend the fish and chips here -- I have yet to have any elsewhere that are as good. Local diners are always competing for the honour of having the best in town, so you only need to google that before you arrive. Our favourite is Wilman's, a little hole-in-the-wall take-out on Isleville Street. And if you're a fan of lobster, this is also the place to be -- you can find it in every restaurant near the coast.

Of course - YUM! Eating at Tony Packos, either the original or the one by the Mudhens' stadium, should be on the list. There are signed buns on the walls that are fun to check out; we take visitors there a lot. You can get some of the food off the net but it isn't quite the same. The dogs need to be cooked just right in the old kettles. Here's the website: http://www.tonypackos.com/index.php

Thanks for catching the omission - come for a visit and try them for yourself.

You have a really great restaurant that I cant remember the name of its right off the highway though LOL in all that tourist gas station stuff its 50's themed.

You also (had Im sure) an old red motel that we stayed at for a summer while my dad was filling in for the chaplain there. I almost killed my brother there! I brought in a mouse and my mother HATES mice and she scremed and jumped back against a door that my brother just happened to be standing behind. OOOps!

Sorry thats all I remember about Red Deer :rotfl:

Yeah that about sums it up. Although neither of these places exist anymore. We actually live in a small town just outside Red Deer which isn't too bad, but I really don't like it here and can't wait to move.

The Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast (I've never been there but that's because I'm a huge chicken when it comes to that sort of stuff HAHA - but I do love reading about the murders!)
Battleship Cove
The St. John's Club - a Portuguese restaurant where Emeril had his first job
And there's a ton of great little Portuguese and Chinese restaurants

the Mountains!
Royal Gorge
AFA chapel
Garden of the Gods
Indian ruins
Cave of the winds
Fossil Beds
Broncos
Rockies
and venturing farther afield
National Parks ( we have 3 Black Canyon of the Gunnision, Mesa Verde, Rocky Mountain)
and National Monuments (Colorado and Great Sand Dunes)

I would suggest a visit to the 1000 year old castle that is 2 minutes from my house. It is where King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I stayed and where Charles Dickens wrote many of his books (plus the village is what Bleake House was based on.) We have the English countryside with lots of country parks close to our house and we are 2 hours from London with all its sights, museums oh and the West End for all the theatre lovers. And if you like rollercoasters the UK's number 1 theme park (with several world 1st coasters) is 2 hours away too.

I would absolutely love to visit that castle!

Let's see, Duluth MN is "supposed" to be a great tourist area. I think they could do better. Here's what most people do when they come here as tourists:

  • Canal Park and the lakewalk along the shores of the tip of Lake Superior. Tour the free marine museum and find some good restaurants. Watch boats come in and out under the lift bridge.
  • Cross the lift bridge to Park Point for the sandy beaches (but watch for the no swimming signs as we often have problems with contamination. :headache:)
  • Enger Tower to get up high and get some great pics of the lake and the city.
  • Drive up the shore to Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock lighthouse, and then stop at Betty's Pies on the way back for dinner and some fabulous pie.
  • Visit the aquarium in Canal Park. Yawn. Freshwater fish only. We call it the "Mistake by the Lake", because nobody likes it and the city keeps pouring more money in it to keep it operating. Nobody knows why. We don't want it.

Huh... well, I can't think of anything else people do here. Pretty boring! :(

WDW.
And if there's a good show playing I'd tell them to go to the Performing Arts Conservatory here.

What about Tony Packo's? I have a friend from the Toledo area and he is always talking about it.

I second that! I went to Univ of Toledo, and Tony Packos was and still is a favorite!

I am from Cleveland, and even though its about an hour away, I would not miss Cedar Point. I love roller coasters and its beautiful by the lake!

OK....Then I guess he wasn't exaggerating (he's actually from Fostoria and says that if you go to Toledo and don't have one of Tony Packo's Hungarian Hot Dogs, it's a wasted trip)....I was just checking ;)

First of all, OP, great idea for a thread!!! :thumbsup2

For me, living in SoCal in the OC: DISNEYLAND!!!! 15 minutes from my home!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :mickeyjum

Then I would tell my visitors to go one hour NORTH and spend all your time exploring L.A. and then go one hour SOUTH and spend all your time exploring San Diego!!! :teeth:

The Ringling Museum...it has the home of John & Mabel Ringling, a circus museum, and an art museum

I love, love, love The Ringling Museum! My parents spend their winters in Palm Harbor and every time we go visit them, we manage a trip to Sarasota to the Museum!!!

WooHooty, ladies!!! My family used to live in BOTH Sylvania, Ohio and North Royalton, Ohio!!! We loved Tony Packo's and were HUGE Mudhen fans!!! Loved Cedar Point!!! Just do NOT miss your OHIO winters!!! :upsidedow
