If someone cancels ADR for 3 but you need 4, is it possible?

New to this ADR planning thing. If someone has a ADR for 3 and they are planning to cancel, if I need an ADR for 4, is it possible to get theirs? How does it work?

If you are trying to coordinate, how do they do it? Any tips would be great.

It'll depend on how close to capacity the restaurant is already booked.

We had great luck canceling for a party of 7 and turning around and rebooking same time for a party of 8. I'd say with a party of 3 they probably have to seat you at a 4 top anyway so it's a good bet.

There are some restaurants that have 3 tops (triangle type tables) but for the most part, a 3 person party would be seated at a 4 top table.
