If out of midsize SUV, what?

Rented midsize SUV using code, with Budget. If they are out of these, what is offered? When called directly, they said the Ford Escape is the only midsize SUV they carry.

If out of that class, do they offer you next nicer vehicle?

Just wondering, because if they're going to say "we're out, but you can have this nice midsize CAR," then we'll just keep our great midsize car rate.

Most likely they will give you a mid-size car instead, like a Pontiac Grand Am or similar. Most times, when you go to pick up your car, they will offer you an upgrade for a fee, don't take it!!! If they happen to be out of the car you actually booked they will sometimes upgrade you anyways at no charge since it isn't your fault they are out of that particular car. If they downgrade you, say to a compact...I would think you would get either re-imbursed or they will change your rate for the lower class of car. Hope this helps
