Saturday June 5, 2004

It seemed like a long time since the pretzels and ice cream at Epcot and we were getting hungry. We were on the monorail heading back from Epcot and wondered where to get a little something for dinner. My husband had looked up menus on the internet (www.allearsnet.com) before we left and the Gasparilla Grill in the Grand Floridian sounded good. On the internet it said the prices were reasonable and it seemed to have a nice selection of things. I thought that since it was the Grand Floridian - it must be a lot nicer than the pokey ole food court at the Contemporary. We got off the monorail at the Grand Floridian station. At first we had a little trouble finding it. Then we realized that you had to go all the way through the lobby and take an outside sidewalk to the left. I mused in my mind - maybe this was sort of like a charming Beaches and Cream like at the Yacht Club. We found it and walked in. Maybe it was because it was getting late and we were tired and hungry... but the first thing we noticed was the huge onslaught of noise from all of the arcade games set up in the same room. I don't know what it is about the Contemporary and the Grand Floridian, but I would like to have a nice place to get something to eat, and in a pleasant atmosphere without having to compete with arcade games. In addition, it was starting to rain outside so getting away from the commotion was not an option. Here's what was purchased: Cheesesteak sandwich - $6.50, fruit bowl - $3.95, grilled cheese sandwich - $2.75, tuna sandwich - $5.95, medium drink - $1.50, milk - $1.29, total with tax - $23.37. Then we sat down at the only table available - right next to the virtual boxing arcade game and listened to, "Oof, oof, OW!" through the entire meal. We wolfed our food and bolted out of there as quickly as possible. We were starting to revive a little bit and got back on the monorail with every intention of riding it home to the Contemporary. However, when it came up on the Magic Kingdom, and we hadn't seen the Magic Kingdom yet, and could park hop for free - it started weighing on my mind so when the doors to the monorail opened, I couldn't contain myself and jumped out the door. DH and DS were forced to follow.

The Magic Kingdom stayed open until 10:00 with the parade at 9:00 and the fireworks at 10:00. It was about 9:00 now so Main Street was jumpin'. We worked our way through the crowds and cut over to Tomorrowland. Buzz Lightyear was our first ride where we walked on twice in a row. Buzz continues to be a family favorite. DH got 425,000 points, DS got 245,000 points (his gun wasn't working according to him) and obviously my gun wasn't working either as I managed 4,500 points. This is a far cry from my husband's all-time record of 999,999 points. What happened was during one visit they stopped the ride to help a wheelchair person on, and it happened to be at the crucial target where you get 100,000 points every time you hit it. For those of you who want to be in the know, it's located on the back of the big orange robot's left arm. So anyway the car had stopped at this critical juncture and my husband kept blasting this spot over and over. When we finished with that ride, the cast member wrote down my husband's name and address and said they might send him something. Unfortunately, they never did. After Buzz, we walked to my personal favorite - the Peoplemover aka the TTA. This is a beautiful ride at night too. Next was Winnie The Pooh, another walk on. I guess everybody was waiting for the parade or something because there certainly was nobody in line. Now it was getting close to 10:00 and we really wanted to see Philharmagic. We cruised through the big doors and saw nobody. There was a family of 4 already in the lobby but that was it - no cast member or anything. We didn't even know if they had another show. Finally a cast member showed up and stated that they would be opening the doors shortly. All 7 of us paraded in. There were a few people already sitting in the theatre - all repeats from the previous show. I guess they just kept their seats for the next show too. This show was fabulous and one of the big highlights of the whole trip. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. It appeals to everybody, and there's nothing scary in it. This is the kind of attraction that I enjoy - one where I don't have to worry about how I'm feeling that day and whether I can "do the ride" or not. Also, the elements of the show itself are fantastic. The 3-D is wonderful and the scents during the show are a nice touch. My son says there are 3 different scents, but I've only managed to smell 2 so far. My favorite scene is the magic carpet ride. It ended and we walked out. By now it was 10:15. It was sprinkling and we had heard that the fireworks had not gone off yet because of the weather. We were making our way back to Main Street and a few people were huddled under the shelters to see if the fireworks would begin. Finally, the loudspeaker came on say that they would start in 5 minutes. A cheer from the crowd went up. We stood in the street and watched the new Wishes Fireworks show. It was wonderful. Then we took the sidewalk from the MK to the Contemporary. It had been the perfect DisneyWorld day with 2 hotels, a swim, 3 parks and close to 15 miles of walking.

Back at the Contemporary, I turned on the t.v. to see if Smarty Jones had been able to win the Triple Crown (he hadn't). That's when we heard the sad news about Pres. Reagan. We left a call for wake-up at 7:15 a.m.
