I just received a message that my Peter Pan FP was canceled for next month. Does that mean the ride will be down for refurb or does it mean something else?

Here is what the email said:

There has been an unexpected change in the operating schedule of an attraction or show during your upcoming Walt Disney World® visit. Your FastPass+ selection for Peter Pan's Flight from 8:05 PM to 9:00 PM on 05/17/2018 is no longer available.

You are fine. It will still be there. I think they are messing with the times.

Did it change from 8:05-9:00 to 8:05-9:05? With park hours being extended it could just be that your window has changed to make it a full hour.

Yep, that is exactly what happened, just rechecked it. It's weird they would say it's no longer available, making it seem the ride itself was no longer available. It's nice they are extending the hours we are there, although that probably means they are expecting more crowds lol.
