then where are the MGM related attractions or characters, like Wizard of Oz or Tom & Jerry? Why is it called Disney MGM Studios, anyway?

I believe it was used to add some credibility to the park.. Like it is a real studio.. MGM movie references are seen in The Great Movie Ride...

FWIW, I was under the impression that the licensing agreement was coming to an end soon & it would become just "Disney Studios". I don't recall seeing alot of "MGM's" on things in Jan. but I could be wrong.

Where are the "Studios", for that matter? Other than some minor TV productions, no filming/animation has been done at the place in ages.

If you're interested in how and why it's called the Disney-MGM Studios, try reading about it here: http://mgmstudios.org/history.html

As for the rumor of MGM's name being replaced simply by "Disney Studios" it's such an old rumor that comes and goes that I don't put much weight on it. The MGM name likely will not be going anywhere.

As for where are the Studios? Disney closed them and moved all production to California in one of it's many post 9/11 decisions to save money.

They used to have an active animation studio on sight. You could see them working in it as you took the Back Lot Tour. I think it is the building that houses some of the costumes and props now (the one you drive through).

That was before all of the animation cut backs.

When I was a CM 5 years ago they told us to call it "The Studios" and leave the MGM out. :confused3

The animation studios closed not too long ago because of the money-grubbing Eisner... Iger doesn't seem to care too much about traditional animation either. Oh well. It's supposed to LOOK and FEEL like a studio.

They used to have a show about costumes and monster make-up. It was really cool! Also, when ABC Soundstage was first open, they used to incorporate the kids into TV Shows such as Gilligan's Island. The backlot tour showed you what it was like to be backstage at a studio. (of course, now that most of it was torn down, it's pointless).

OT, but given that Iger has said animation is central to the company, I don't think 2-D is dead, especially since John Lasseter wants Disney animation to continue to make 2-D films. It may not be every year, but I'd rather have one great feature every 3 to 4 years than a mediocre at best feature every year.
