Ok that's it. I just laid down the law. I told both of my kids that I am not picking up, rinsing or loading into the dishwasher one single more glass except for my own. I swear there are days when I handle 25 glasses and we are only a family of 4! Why is it so difficult to rinse your glass when you are done and put it in the dishwasher??????????? I even tried buying throw away plastic cups, but I had to go around the house every morning and collect them and throw them away. UGH. Thanks for listening. I feel better now.

I went through this one summer when DH's granddaughters came for a visit. I finally, in desperation, wrote their names on glasses with an oil based metallic pen that is used primarily by stained glassers. Like you, I'd gone the papercup route only to find discarded cups all over the house. When asked about leaving the cups all over, NEVER did anyone ever admit to it being theirs. With their names written (and unable to come off in wash) they had to become responsible for their glass and they did. :teeth:

I'm loving the "name on the cup" idea. I'm off to do it right now.

For water the kids each have their own Tupperware plastic cup. Now that the kids have gotten older the size of the cup has got bigger, but at least they know which one is theirs. I run them through the d/w every time I run a load. They still go through them for other drinks, but at least it cuts down on the number. We could use them for other non-milk drinks and rinse it out, but I try to limit how many times a day they have juice, etc, and those are mainly just had a meals (and water between meals). My kids are old enough to get their own drinks, though, and who knows what happens when I'm not paying attention. :rotfl:

Oh yeah! Sounds like my house! I can finish doing the dinner dishes (loading dishwasher, washing those things that I want to have on hand tomorrow by hand & cleaning the sink, etc....) & not two minutes later, there are glasses or a dish or two in the sink!! I never have gone to bed with all my dishes done! It's never ending here!

I have never had the "cups all over the house problem" (never even heard of this until your thread) because my kids have never been allowed to drink anywhere in the house but in the kitchen.

They do go thru a lot of cups though, so I buy plastic cups & that's all they use for day to day use.

I took my kids to a ceramics painting place a few years ago and had them paint coasters. We all have one and that is where our glass goes that we use for general drinks of water throughout the day. I put them in the dishwasher each night. We use seperate glasses at dinner, but having a water glass handy throughout the day has worked for us.

Tell me about it!! I pick cups, bowls, forks, spoons everywhere!

I have many many plastic cups...all go in the trash so I don't have any to wash a the end of the day! Sometimes they do get left around though since my daughter will have a drink in the playroom and leave it there...if we eat dinner in the living room sometimes they get left there..always have them left in the bedroom since Ialways havea glass of water next to our beds for nighttime drinks....but they all get gathered up and tossed out so I don't have to wash them!

Allright, here's an update. I put names on two glasses. Which everyone thought was very funny HA HA!

The next day, my DD, age 14, put names on all the glasses. Very funny, right - this is like a war now. I'm fuming, which she just loves.

I decided I'm just not doing it anymore. They can live with glasses all over the house and I won't pick them up. Maybe I'll have to move out for a while, but, hey that won't be so bad right ;)

Save one glass for yourself and pile the rest in the sink or hide them somewhere...LOL.

Just went through my DD's cupboards the other day and convinced her to get rid of 90% of the glasses and coffee mugs she had.. There are 3 adults here (two of whom drink coffee) and 1 child - absolutely NO reason for 30+ glasses and 50+ mugs.. Good grief! We're not running a restaurant here!! LOL We left 6 mugs and 10 glasses easily accessible - tucked some extras ("just in case") in an upper cabinet that's not easily accessible - and the rest are sitting in a box waiting to go to the Salvation Army or somewhere..

The more you have, the more they'll use.. Ditch the majority of them and they'll be forced to wash their "own" glass when there's no more left in the cabinet.. ;)

How about making assigining some handwashing duties each night? Doesn't make it into the washer, it gets hand washed by the "owner".

herc.

We went through this situation also. I have both plastic (Tupperware) and glass cups. The two smaller kids now have their names on some of the plastic cups (permanent marker). They get one cup a day. When they use it, they rinse it out and put it aside in a special place on the kitchen counter. The older child can use either plastic or glass but he too gets only one per day. Its just plain nuts to run the dishwasher because its filled with cups. It takes a bit getting used to, but it works! We've been doing this for a few years now. I also don't allow them to eat in any other room other than the kitchen. We do have exceptions though such as movie night/popcorn. But in general we don't allow food in other rooms, in front of the TV, etc., therefore no misc. dishware to hunt down throughout the house.

In my house it is my DH that goes through the glasses! My kids will rinse and reuse, I rinse and reuse...he uses a new glass everytime he gets a drink, even if all he had was water! Plus he uses these HUGE cups that don't fit on the top shelf of the dishwasher, so I have to out them in the bottom rack, which means less space for my dishes and bowls, either that or I have to wahs them by hand.

Wow, that is seriously disrespectful in my opinion. Honestly, I would not allow that to happen. That young lady would be getting the kind of talking to that makes her ears burn but then I have a very low tolerance for disrespect. Can't say my way is always best though, certainly there could be many other, better solutions.

If you handle things differently than I do then another solution is to take every glass out of the house except one for each person (with their names on them). After a few weeks of learning to live with one glass you could bring in more glasses.

We had a few of those jumbo sized cups. Notice the word HAD. Thats how I solved that!

We had the same exact problem with cups and glasses left all over the house. We even did the signed cup thing but they still left them behind. Then I started calling the offender to take care of the cups whenever they left one behind, if they wore outside in the pool, they would have to come out dry off take care of their glass before they could go back in the pool. Playing a video game? Too bad you have to take care of your glass! Having very involved conversation with friends? Tough luck, hang up and take care of your glass. Eventually they caught on, the only other thing that drove me crazy was when they would have friends over and their friends would leave cups all over the house so now when they come the plastic cups come out and I write on them with a sharpie. This way I know who the offender is.
