If I wanted to upgrade onboard...

what do I need to do? Also, does anyone have any ideal what the price for an upgrade from an inside (cat 10) stateroom to an outside (cat 9 or 8) stateroom would be onboard? The more I think about it the more I think family and myself would enjoy having a porthole.

I'd actually do my homework before getting on the ship. I'd call my TA or DCL and ask if there is any availability and what the price difference is. I guess if I was even considering this option I wouldn't wait until I was onboard the ship.

If you want to wait until boarding it is cheaper than paying the difference now only if you want to take a chance that you might have to stay in your orgional room. Try to be the first in line at the check in counter at the port because others have the same idea you do. I have read that some people have upgraded but not to just an 8 or 9 but to a 3 or 4 for about $700 depending on your cruise dates.
I am not sure if there is a method to DCL upgrading but I think they would fill up the lower cat cabins first so that may be why 3's and 4's are occassionally available at port. If your heart is set on a porthole I would do it before your cruise date then maybe see if something even better is available at port.
On our last cruise we orgionally booked a cat 10 then called about 10 days before sailing and got a cat 9 Guarantee. When we arrived we were upgraded to a cat 8. Good Luck with whatever you choose.

We check on an upgrade (same details as yours) last May and it was going to be $400.00. We went to look at the room and decided it was not worth $50.00 a day to have a port hole. We felt like we would rather spent the extra money on the excursions and other extras.

We tried to do this last Sept. We had 2 cat 11's next to each other. My mom ended up in a full arm cast, so we thought adjoining rooms wouldbe easier. We kept going back & forth on this prior to the cruise, ultimately deciding to take our chances at the port. There weren't many options, and the "discount" was definately not there. In other words, to pay the difference would have been too expensive. There was no deal to be had. I tried again on the ship, after we sailed, and the same thing. If you really want it, do it now, IMHO.

When I sailed this January there were no rooms available to upgrade to - so you may not have that option.

I tried to upgrade from a cat. 9 to a verandah room on the 2/28 Magic and there were not any upgrades to be had! Last year though, I upgraded from a cat. 9 to a cat. 6 for $300. I got to the port early and lucked out! It is all a game of chance!

We have upgraded at the port 3 times from a 4 to a 3 for quite a bit less than if we had done it ahead of time (we checked). You are taking a chance and if you really want it you should probably do it now. Someone has posted to do your homework. I agree. Know what the cost would be today, know what categories might be available and then you'll have an idea if the deals are good or not. Check the DCL website for your cruise to see what categories are still available and call to see the upgrade price difference. Good luck!
