If I ever offer to help you with a computer problem, please smack some sense into me

The reference drivers do exactly the same thing. As soon as the (DOS) screen says that the system updates are complete, the screen blanks and a C:\> prompt appears in the upper left hand corner and the cursor jumps down about 3 lines. At this point, I have to do a hard reset in order to reboot the computer. When presented with the option to reboot in safe mode, I can go ahead and select a normal reboot and the system comes up. Locked in 640x480x16 mode.

I may try pulling the Creative Labs Encore board.

UPDATE - Removing the Creative Labs board had no effect.

For anyone interested, it looks as though this might be a problem between the BIOS on the video card and the BIOS on the motherboard. I found a reference on a site that described precisely what I am observing. Unfortunately, my only recourse may be to try to put the system back together the way it was.

As of 4:15AM, I am calling it quits. I put the old 300Mhz CPU back into the box. In my 20 hours of fiddling, I managed to unconfigure the modem, so I will leave it to Bill to fix that. I gave it my best shot.

You sound like Jeff, he's done that on many an occasion at work.

I think, at last count he had 11 Pc's in his cube!

11 PCs. That's pretty impressive.

Bill just showed up at work 15 minutes ago. I managed to take a 2 hour nap in my chair. Believe it or not, he's thinking about trying to return the ATI videocard (that I told him not to buy in the first place) and try his luck with the brand that I suggested. I told him that we would have to wait until the weekend to try again. Sheesh.

Don't you have to go somewhere for the entire weekend this weekend John? ;) Run while you can!! LOL

John-Did you just spend all night working on that computer?

Anyone else reading this thread and feeling like it's in a foreign language?

Pembo you read my mind! I was just going to say before, john I never knew you spoke Chinese, ROFL. At least that's what it looks like to me.

I'm getting a migraine just thinking about you trying to figure out the problem! Give it a good, swift kick for giving you so much trouble!:jester:

TC:cool:

I understood most of the Computer speak on this thread.. but again.. this is coming from living with my DH for many years. Back in the day.. (goodness I sound old) I actually did some minor programming.. and hardware repair.. DH is trying to get me to do MCP/MCSE with him, but that may be a bit out of my league.

Will the store return the soundcard? Some places are really picky about that kind of stuff nowadays.

Yes 11, PCs at last count... scary thought isn't it.. he's pushing for a lab/bigger cube but so far no luck!
