I am thinking about buying resale into DVC. Vero Beach and Hilton Head of course our the cheapest. How hard is it too book in Disney if you are a member of one of these 2 resorts. I try to go to disney on off peak times but with 5 kids currently in school I may have to book when they are off which will be peak. If anyone has any info on this it would be great.

I think as long as you're pretty flexible on where you want to stay you should be fine. We own at SSR but usually stay wherever. We love Saratoga but like to change it up where we stay...

We owned at HH only the first 5 years of ownership and had no problem booking all of the WDW resorts at 7 months.

I guess I'll be the dissenter. I would never buy at an off-site location if my intent was to always stay at WDW. At least if you buy a Disney resort, you know you will always have a place to stay at WDW. Remember we have no guarantees other than being able to book at our home resort. It may be unlikely that that will change, but it could someday. You would be bumming I assume if you could only stay at Vero when you planned on going to Epcot that day.

Plus, Vero Beach and Hilton Head Island have some of the highest annual dues. Any savings in price could be eaten up in dues.

Another thing to think about is the difference in carrying costs specifically the annual dues. In the case of VB, you pay (this year) $6.78 per point.
That's the highest in the system. Calculate your "savings" and compare to the possible higher MF's to see the lenght of time the savings are really a savings to you.

As long as you are not set on a given resort you should be able to find a room at 7 months out.

Things can and do change, and you might find yourself one day without the ability to stay anywhere except for Vero Beach if that is where you own.

Buy where you want to stay...especially if you want to visit WDW. It is a long drive between the two. And as mentioned above, cost per point is not where your majority of cost lies, but with the dues that are paid every year.

i would not buy VB or HHI unless i intended to stay there on a regular basis.

let's say you have no problem booking onsite at wdw at 7 months out 4 out of 5 times...how are you going to feel the one time you get locked out?

HHI and VB may currently be the cheapest to purchase, but they're the most expensive to own. Maintenance fees will be by far your largest expense over the life of the contract, much more than the original buy-in cost. And the MFs at those two properties are the highest in the DVC system.

I think it's a much better deal to look for an SSR or OKW resale, and at least that way you'll be able to book on property at 11 months.

Thank you everyone for replying so fast. I was not taking into account the annual dues as so many of you pointed out. It probably is best for me to look in Disney since that is where I plan on staying 90% of the time.

Not necessarily true. I think it might be possible to get a Vero contract for as low as $40 per point, and with the new changes they may go lower. Factor in the interest, and I think Vero is the better deal, higher dues and all, but it depends on what you compare it to.

That wasn't always the case. Look at historical data of MF's. When I purchased HHI it was one of the cheapest. Nobody has a crystal ball and can see what can happen. And I must say - HHI is one of the best themed and maintained resorts we have been to.

My first purchase was a HHI resale. We love it. If they told us we could never go to WDW again - wouldn't phase us in the least. It's our favorite resort. The CM's are the best!!!! The offsite resorts are Disney's secret jewels as far as my family is concerned.

Now we did add on at BWV - but only 100 points. LOL But I have had no problems using my points at WDW. I am flexible when needed - but the only time I had trouble was a last minute trip - 4 months in advance - I could only get SSR. Which was our first stay and really enjoyed the proximity to DTD. It was perfect for our quick 4 day, only 1 day are the park vist.

I find it ironic that the only time I have ever had to waitlist since becoming a member - was for this coming summer - at VB!!!! We are so happy!!!! The waitlist came through.

I buy where I want to stay, but I've bought a HHI contract with banked points, and HHI isn't in our plans for this year. I've been able to get what I've wanted at 7 months....VB, AKV (but not value, standard), BCV and I'm hoping for VWL for the end of October. Except for AKV, I'm looking for 2 bedrooms and relatively short stays.

You should also be aware that peak for DVC may not always be the same as peak for non-DVC resorts or WDW. For example, early December is very hard to book DVC at 7 months, but I have received a generous AP discount for booking through CRO 4 months out.

My understanding is that summer is actually pretty easy to book DVC at 7 months. Some spring break weeks may be tough; others not so much. New Years and Thanksgiving are both difficult to book.

Best of luck in your decision -- Suzanne

There are some great resale deals out there on OKW and SSR. If you should ever lose the right to book outside your home resort at least you will still be connected to WDW.

Not hard at all. We own at VB and in 11 years have yet to stay there. All stays have been on property.
