If DVC is so good, why are there so many resales???

Esmeralda,

You are doing this right. It isn't something that should be purchased on a whim nor with money that really isn't there.

One of the intangible benefits many of us have found is that it gets us to actually plan our vacations. Once something is planned, the likelihood is that you will actually go on the trip. "Someday" becomes a reality. As you mentioned, life is fleeting. DVC is a great way to get some joy out of it.

Look over the information. Keep asking questions. Balance the books. Even if now isn't the right time for you to purchase, you may change your mind in a year or two.

Look at it similar to a car purchase. You have to put out the money to buy the car. The dues are the gas, oil, maintenance, etc. But this "car" will last until either 2042 or 2054 -- not many Lexus' can make that claim.

I think DVC is an excellant deal IF one goes to Disneyworld regularly (at least once every two years) and plans to stay ONSITE in one of the "nicer" hotels. If that doesn't fit your vacation pattern -- for example, if you don't mind staying offsite -- then there are far cheaper vacation options. The DVC is probably the most expensive timeshare there is, but since Disney delux hotels are also expensive (about $200 a night), it can be cheaper to join the DVC than to pay cash for a Disney hotel.

The savings of a DVC membership over paying cash to stay at a Disney hotel will also vary depending on what time of year and what days of the week you go. Weekends, especially during high season, it may be cheaper to just pay cash. However, if you stay lots of weeknights during low seasion, then it's a GREAT deal! (If your kids are school age, though, you may not be able to go during these lower priced times.)

Like someone else said - what amazes me is that there are so few resells. When you consider how many members there are and just the many possible situations that can come up in everyday life.

Its really not that good. This isn't even a real public board. Its run by Disney to sell those stupid points.

All these posts and all these posters are just two Dinsey sales geeks making stuff up.

Once in a while someone like me gets through and lets the world know the truth.

Ever wonder why Micheal Eisner and Pete Warner have never been seen together??????

I could possibly be killed for posting this.

If you are referring to the founder and webmaster of DIS it is Werner.

I agree that the majority of DVC pts are not up for sale, that the majority of owners are very happy holding on to their DVC pts, etc., etc. I know, I also have no desire to give up/sell/trade even one of my DVC points.
However, you must also keep in mind that the Timeshare Store is not the only avenue for buying DVC contracts that are for sale. There are other realtors, etc that also sell timeshare contracts which include DVC contracts. So the %'s based on the Timeshare Store listing are not accurate because only one source of resales is being taken into account. You can't really put a puzzle together, if you are only using one of the pieces.

or are simply deciding to sell for a profit (try that with another timeshare!).

We have no intention of selling, but I checked out the resale list recently and was pleased to see that it looks like our points would sell for about a 12% profit. Pretty cool.

Could be any reason. Maybe some sellers can't afford DVC anymore. Maybe they are in poor health. Maybe they are just selling one of many contracts.

Maybe they just hate Disney, lol.

naaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh....totally impossible in this lifetime.....

There are continuing resales, yes...but those are only a small percentage of the members selling their contracts. I think that there are some people that buy in and realize after they've bought it that it's not for them. Perhaps some of us cannot understand this :p but it happens. On the other side of the coin, there are people going through financial difficulties and they don't have a choice.

I already told my husband that if we had major financial issues we would sell the house before DVC  Not up for discussion :teeth:

We are in the process of purchasing our first DVC points at the BWV, and already own a timeshare at Sheraton's Vistana Villages.

The value of the Sheraton Timeshare has dropped to 55-60% of what we paid less than 2 years ago, but the value of DVC points has gone up in the same time frame.

I'm not saying that DVC points are an investment vehicle, but knowing that the thing you are buying will not go down in value has to be a valid consideration.

Also, the DVC Resorts vary from $250-$650 per night - the cost over 10 years would more than cover the cost of the points and Maint Fees.
