You are doing this right. It isn't something that should be purchased on a whim nor with money that really isn't there.
One of the intangible benefits many of us have found is that it gets us to actually plan our vacations. Once something is planned, the likelihood is that you will actually go on the trip. "Someday" becomes a reality. As you mentioned, life is fleeting. DVC is a great way to get some joy out of it.
Look over the information. Keep asking questions. Balance the books. Even if now isn't the right time for you to purchase, you may change your mind in a year or two.
Look at it similar to a car purchase. You have to put out the money to buy the car. The dues are the gas, oil, maintenance, etc. But this "car" will last until either 2042 or 2054 -- not many Lexus' can make that claim.
