Where do you think they'd send the 3 night cruisers as an alternitive while it gets fixed? Seems like the hurricane is headed right to CC.

My guess...most likely they would do a day at sea. They could also stay in port at Nassau.
CC is not always accessable. There are several cruises a year in which they are unable to dock due to weather conditions. Mostly these occur during the winter. When this happens they usually do a day at sea.

We were on the first cruise back to CC after another hurricane did serious damage a few years ago. They had cancelled stops to CC for a few weeks during that time.

It was amazing that the storm had done so much damage there. The crew told us that the storm hit quicker than anticipated and they did not have time to store all the chairs/umbrellas away off the beach. They lost most of them in the sea. Their priority was of course of to get the CM's living on the island onboard to safety.

When we were swimming at the family beach we saw a few still underwater (pretty far out). DCL did an amazing job at restoring the island.

We have been very lucky....in 10 DCL cruises we have been able to get to CC each time....let's see what happens next month when we sail!!!

We just cam back 9/2/2004. We were the last ship to go before Hurricane Frances. On our last day at sea, we returned to CC. Our crew was sent aboard to help the CC crew pack up the island. Everything was stowed away or put on the Wonder. We left CC with their crew. I hope the building on CC survived.

Rather than a day at sea, I'm hoping that we get to go to a different port - one with a great beach. I really looked forward to swimming in the tropical ocean and while nothing can be as wonderful as CC (at least from what I have heard - never been there), I would rather at least get a chance to swim at another beach than be at sea, just looking!

My thoughts exactly Kris, especially since we're on the Eastern and there are only two other POC (back to back yet) and that would mean we'd have 5 days at sea!:earseek:

When we had CC cancelled on us due to Floyd back in '99 we did a day at sea. We actually went to CC but dropped anchor away from shore and a small boat came out to get supplies. They were in the middle of trying to get the island back up and running. It was sad because the whole island was brown :( It was our very first DCL cruise and we were disappointed but there was nothing we could do. Luckily when we did the DVC Member cruise we got to do CC twice so for 5 cruises we have 5 CC visits :D

Mary -

Was yours a 3-day cruise or a 4-day? On the 4-day, there is already a day at sea, so to have another day at sea added instead of a port would be a bummer.

Kris

We went on a 4 day cruise on the Sunday after CC was hit by Floyd - we got to go to Key WEst instead of CC.

Ours was a 3 day. We did Nassau first, then our stop at CC. A nice taste of DCL but I don't know if I ever want to do a 3 day again. :D I don't think they could do Key West on the 3 day cruises since that would be all US ports and only ships built in the US can do that (of course they might get an exemption).

The next couple of days should prove interesting as we see what happens.

Personally I would love 2 days at sea, but that is just me.

We were told that due to the closing of CC & Nassau due to the hurricane, the Wonder would go to Cozumel. Much better than just floating at sea for 3 days.

I think Key West in place of CC is a terrible choice --- CC is *all* about beach and Key West is *nothing* about beach. For those with little ones, a beach day is the most fun and the easiest. Kids, even big ones, have little interest in a town with no beach whatsoever that has basically shopping and bars to offer. Key West is an adult-interest port, imo. I know my kids would be bored with it.

Below is from Disney Cruise website from 9/5/04:

As you may know, Hurricane Frances brought about significant destruction in part of the Caribbean as well as the state of Florida in past days. The thoughts of Disney Cruise Line’s cast and crew are with all of those who have been negatively impacted by the hurricane.

The slow movement of Hurricane Frances has made it necessary for us to make additional changes to the scheduled Disney Magic and Wonder sailings.

Disney Wonder
The four-night Bahamian sailing originally scheduled to depart on September 5th has been cancelled . All guests have the option of a full refund, a four-night Walt Disney World Resort stay, or on a space available basis, sailing on the modified Disney Magic four-night itinerary scheduled for September 7th. All guests scheduled for this cancelled voyage will also receive a discount voucher for a future three-, four- or seven-night cruise.

Guests scheduled to sail on the cancelled September 5th Disney Wonder voyage are in the process of being contacted by our reservations staff or they may contact Disney Cruise Line Reservations
at 800-WDW-CRUISE.

The September 9th three-night cruise to the Bahamas is still set to depart as scheduled from Port Canaveral.

Disney Magic
The seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailing, originally scheduled for September 4th, will be shortened to a four-night cruise and will depart on Tuesday, September 7th at 5 p.m. from Port Canaveral. The ship will arrive back at Port Canaveral as scheduled on Saturday, September, 11th. This voyage will sail to Cozumel, Mexico.

Fares for this shortened cruise will be discounted 50% , and guests will be offered special incentives for sailing.

The September 11th, seven-night Western Caribbean sailing is still set to depart as scheduled from Port Canaveral.

Please keep in mind that DCL doesn't have a much "choice." The reason that all cruise lines' 3-night and 4-night cruises from Port Canaveral normally go to ports in the Bahamas -- Nassau, Freeport, and private islands (DCL's Castaway Cay and RCCL's Cococay) -- is that those ports are relatively close to Florida. Key West is also close enough. And a 4-night cruise can go to Cozumel, with a day at sea in each direction.

While Castaway Cay is being cleaned up and repaired -- and other Bahamian islands are getting similar attention -- what other beach destination would you recommend?

A cruise ship moves at about the same speed that a car drives through a residential neighborhood. There just isn't time to go to St. Thomas or St. Maarten or Antigua on a 3-night or 4-night cruise.

I think Cozumel would be a good choice. At least there is a beach there, right?

Kris

Or even Miami, as they also have a beach -- any other Port cities that have a nice beach?

Kris

There's gteat beaches by Tampa but that wouldn't be much of a port, neither IMHO would be Miami... the best best would be Cozumel or the Caymans if the Caymans aren't in bad shape either
