I know this is a Disney board but I am "betting" that some of you may have been to Vegas and after 12 years of going nowhere but Disney it's time to give my husband a little break! We are in the very early stages of planning a Las Vegas trip to celebrate my upcoming retirement (next June) after 35 years of teaching first grade.

If you have been would you mind sharing your favorite hotel and the good/bad about it. We are thinking we want to stay on the "Strip." What shows are not to be missed? Which of the Cirque shows would you recommend? Thanks so much for any advice. I am a Disney expert but know nothing about Vegas!

I have only been there once but we stayed in the Paris and loved it. The water show in front of the Bellagio was incredible to see from our room. We ate in the tower and although pricey it was well worth it!
I don't know if Celine Dion still does have a show but if she does please try to see that. My DH was never a fan of hers and was literally blown away by that show.
Good luck planning and have a great trip :cheer2:

Be sure to go to the websites of all the major hotels and sign up for their e-mail promotions. If you are going in June, you should be able to get some very good deals. It is VERY HOT in Vegas in the summer and their promotions reflect that.

I am going with friends on Labor Day for three nights and we are staying in the Bellagio Suite (1,050 Square Feet) for $299 per night. A "regular" room was $149.

I have stayed at Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Paris, Treasure Island and Flamingo in Vegas. I would also recommend Mirage, Venetian, Wynn, depending on how much you want to spend.

I have seen Mystere, "O", Ka! and will see LOVE on Labor Day. The cirque shows are not to be missed, in my opinion. You can't really make a mistake.

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement. I am not a teacher, but I have been working for the same company for 35 years in September. It's a long time :thumbsup2

Just back the day before yesterday.

You MUST see LOVE!!!! We've seen it twice now and it's really amazing! They've truly knocked this one out of the park! The theater is really nice and comfortable, and souvenier/program prices are quite resonable too.

As far as hotels, most of the bigger strip hotels are OK.

Bellagio is great if you're willing to spend the money and can get a lake view. If not, don't bother.
The Venetian has great rooms, though some of them are beginning to show their age and the hotel is a bit far North up the strip.
Paris and MGM are both fine.
Aladdin is converting to a Planet Hollywood and is under construction.
Mirage and TI are showing their age, so I would skip them unless you get a great deal (less than $100/night).
Flamingo is a great deal and a great location (nice pool, too!) but is also older, smaller, and doesn't have all the bells & whistles of the new properties.
Monte Carlo is fine if a bit bland. Nice rooms and nice pool, just not much "wow"!
Luxor is really nice, and good prices can often be had. Tower rooms are better than the pyramid rooms.
Mandalay Bay is nice but pricey, and you're at the absolute end of the strip, which can be a challenge for walking.
Avoid Excalibur, Sahara, Circus Circus, Stardust, and Stratosphere. They're all cheap, but don't have much else going for them. If saving money is a priority, check out Flamingo and Tropicana first.

Other shows that are good:

Mac King Comedy Magic afternoon show at Harrahs
Comedy Stop at Tropicana
V - Ultimate Variety Show at Aladdin
KA at MGM

I would strongly recommend renting a car. The strip is bigger than it looks and the hotels aren't as close as you would think. You're not going to want to trudge around in the June heat. Valet parking is free at all the major hotel, so for $3 in tips you car is whisked away right at the door and brought right back to you.

Hope you have a great time!!!

I will be in Vegas this weekend. The best deal I found was on ebay buying VIP tickets to the clubs. On ebay you can also bid on food vouchers that could save you money. We are staying at the Aladdin, but I have also stayed at the Riviera (stay away, too far from center of strip) and at the Excalibur. I like to stay cheap because I am never in my room.

They have some of those big fences up around parts of the property. Unfortunately we didn't go in, but from what I've heard it's mostly daytime work. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

From what I have read on TripAdvisor.com and LVtalk.com the construction is not that bad. I stayed at the Aladdin back in March '05 and loved the place. The location is excellent, the restaurants are great, and the rooms are decent. Love the soaking tubs!

A couple of places to start reading:

www.cheapovegas.com for hotel reviews and general advice

Quick bit of advice:

When you say you want to be "on the Strip," be sure to focus on the main parts of the strip. There are places like the Stratosphere that are techncially "on the Strip" but are farther away from the action than some off-strip properties.

I would see Mystere as a first Cirque show in Vegas. Just a fantastic show. KA and O are also great, and have heard great things about Love. But you can't go wrong with Mystere.

If you're not planning on renting a car, then you probably should stay on the Strip. You should probably stay on the Strip regardless. We made that mistake our first trip out and have never made it again.

Mandalay Bay: My current favorite resort in Las Vegas. The place is gorgeous! The service and staff are phenomenal. The wave pool and pool area is wonderful to spend some time at. The casino is a fairly good in the sese that you actaully can win a bit of money. Entertainment at the hotel is superb- dining, aquarium exhibit, etc. I loved the room we had- it looked down the Strip. Just amazing to watch the lights come on at night. Bathroom is great, too :goodvibes

Aladdin: My least favorite. We stayed here right when it opened. I thought the place was...tacky. It has big fake jewels on the walls inside. The pool area is outside on the 12 or 14th floor. Although a great view, it is hot and they don't do anything to keep the concrete from burning your feet. DH did very well at their casino one night though and made about $4,000. Rooms and bathrooms were quite nice.

Mirage: Perhaps my second favorite. I remember loving the rooms becuase there was a bit of a canopy over them. Fairly standard sized bathroom- but the last time we stayed there was 1999 for a swim meet. Things could have changed. The pool area is great and the in-house entertainment is awesome- the Secret Garden, dolphins, etc. I loved Seigfreid and Roy. We saw them six times over the years and it's still heartbreaking to not associate their show with the hotel for us. Don't bet that you'll make much money at their casino though.

Bellagio: I was so excited to stay here and found the place really wasn't that fabulous. DH loved the wall of mirrors in the room though :lmao: I didn't like the feeling that you were being nickeled and dimed everywhere you went in the hotel. I was not as impressed with the rooms as the Mandalay Bay even. The pool area is stately and aesthetically pleasing. It's nice to that you can just up and move to another pool if you want a quiet pool. We found them all to be uncomfortably cold though. Like shivering while in them cold! Again, don't bet that you'll win much from them. Shopping is great though- Armani, Tiffany & Co., etc.

Hilton Flamingo: Shocked myself and loved this one! It's got a great central location. The pool area is just incredible. Just about the time you start thinking this is getting a little too warm, misters start spraying from the palm trees. They are all sorts of wild birds around, too, from flamingos to penguins. I remember the rooms being comfortable although not much else about them. The casino was a good one as far as having a good time- win a little/lose a little. The pool is why you go to the Hilton in this case though!

Ceasar's Palace: A lot of fun! There's something nice about staying i such an icon. The pools are great, the rooms are large and comfortable, the shopping is some of the best in Vegas, and the pools are so much fun! This might be a great option for your first trip to Vegas. There are almost always the big ticket shows in and out of Ceasar's, too. We saw Chuck Berry and Little Richard on the drop of a dime becuase we were hotel guests. The show was sold out except to guests. There are perks in other words.

Excalibur: So-so. When we were kids, it was a lot of fun becuase of the big arcade. These days, it looks like it's heyday has long since passed. The room are more the standard hotel sized rooms, as are the bathrooms. I can't remember anything about the pool. It seemed like we were always leaving the Excalibur to find entertainment. It is located well for walking to some of the other big hotels, though. There's a moving walkway that connects Luxor, Excalibur, and the Mandalay that goes inside the hotels, and on the outside, there's a "Monorail". I wouldn't suggest this one for adults.

Palace Station: Off the strip and stripped down. Just don't do it.

Luxor: Cool hotel, excpet we won't ever stay there again. I had someone spit from one of balconies in the main pyramid into my food at the restaurant below. It wasn't a one time thing either. The rooms in the pyramid are really cool though. The view is really something. There's a lot by way of entertainment within the hotel itself. Pools are really cool. Fun hotel.

I'm itching to stay at the Palms or the Wynn at this point :thumbsup2

What shows are not to be missed? Which of the Cirque shows would you recommend?

Danny Gans: At the Mirage. Family friend. Go see him :goodvibes

Blue Man Group: We saw them while they were still at Luxor. I think they are over in the Venetian (Paris?) at this point. I loved the show. DH and my Mom hated it. It's quirky, but the showmanship and talent are undeniable.

Mama Mia! I was brought up on ABBA songs so this show is great for us. In general, it's an incredible show. We saw it first in Vags and haven't missed it on tour since then. A lot of fun- can't go wrong here. At the New York, New York.

Mystere: At the Treasure Island. The first Cirque show we ever saw- nearly 10 years ago- annnd we've take anyone travelling with us there for ages. It's a fun and light-hearted show.

O: Bellagio. Fantastic, but overwhelming the first time. It's also very dark and sinister. My sister's significant other is in the cast and he had explain a lot to me. Get your tickets EARLY. Call the day they go on sale or your out of luck almost. This one qualifies as a must see becuase it's not going to tour...

Chippendales: :rolleyes1 My mom and I quite enjoyed ourselves. At the Rio.

Lance Burton: Monte Carlo (very nice hotel at great prices BTW!). Not as high-octane as Seigfried and Roy were, but if you want a magic show, this is a good one to see. It's a small and intimate theater and he does a really good job at making it feel even smaller. He's been around for years, so he must be doing something right! My brother loved him!

Jubilee: The epitome of old Las Vegas shows and show girls.

-If you can get tickets to see Elton John, I would put that on my list of things to do.

-Wayne Brady (From Whose Line Is It Anyway?) is unbelievable. He came to the Naval Academy when DH was still a student. We were both aching we were laughing so hard. We've seen some of the other Whose Line guys on tour over the years and they've never disappointed. I think Wayne does shows at the Mirage, but it's a catch-if-catch-can type thing.

-There's a ton of new Cirque shows out that are supposed to be top rate. I saw them in a flight magazine. See if you can find reviews for them. If you can only go to one Cirque, put O on the priority list.

A few notes:
-Don't take anything out of the minibars to admire it and look at it and thenn try to put it back in. Most of them charge automatically to the room charges at the front desk. Once you take it out, you pay for it.

-Allot entertainment money for gambling. Don't forget to budget for it.

-If you're going it the summer, it's hot :sunny: and crowded. If you can delay until later fall, do so. Otherwise, spring time is great. It's not pukey hot yet but very comfortable.

-If you're looking to go to the big ticket shows, get your reservations ahead of time. Same goes for dining at the "it" restaurants.

-Factor in travel time to and from your locations. It's no easy walk on the Strip becuase some of these hotel facades are a quarter mile long. There are plenty of taxis around.

-Try to get out of the city for at least one day and into the desert. The Hoover Dam is quite a sight. There are some fantastic day rafting trips you ca take down the Colorado River that start at the Dam (well, they used to before 9/11). We did one and were back in time for Seigfried and Roy that night- early morning though. And the water is cold  Lake Meade has all sorts of recreational activities.

-If you want to add the Grand Canyon into this trip, give yourself a few days there and plan to leave from/fly into Phoenix depending on when in the trip you'd be doing it. It's too far a drive to plan a day trip; not to mention it's too beautiful to cut it short. Phoenix is a lot closer than going back to Vegas though for flights.

-Check the websites for discounts- everything from the hotel website itself to the Sherman's Travel and Expedia site for package deals. A lot of times, they hotel won't offer you the discounted room rates, but you if mention, "I saw on your website a promotion from $--- per night that applies to our travel dates," it's valid and they honor it. Print a copy of anything like that you use though in case there was to be a problem at check in.

-Understand that you will not do and see everything while you are there. We've been there a lot (as you can probably tell) and still have things on our to do list!

-Check the listings to see if there are any special single-night headliners in while you're there. You don't want to get there and find their names plastered on the hotel signage and not have a way to get tickets.

-Freemont Street is a lot of fun, and the light show is really cool. You're not going to go through the best neighborhoods to get there though!

-Traffic is horrendous! It gridlocks at night. Plan accordingly.

-HAVE AN AWSOME TRIP! :cheer2:

I will be going to LV in Nov, and wanted to see a showgirls type of show, I was thinking either Jubilee or Folies Bergere. Also are there places on the strip where you can get 2 for 1 tickets? Hmmm...now I am considering seeing LOVE. Decisions, decisions.

We were just in Vegas a few months ago and my mom leaves this Friday.

As far as Aladdin..the construction is not that bad, esp when you consider that BOTH my mother and I got room rates for $49 !!! CAN'T beat that! If you are interested in the link for the rates I can try to find it for you, just PM me! The rate also included free bfast or lunch buffets....

We LOVE Venetian, but even with their "deals" it is $$$...we have NEVER had a problem there! Ever... if you don't stay, you MUST see it!!!!!!!

Have heard the Wynn is FAB! Want to try it!

Paris was ok but only if you have a view of the fountains....

Bellagio also very$$$$

Eating...well, we always recommend everyone try a sunset-timed dinner at the Top of the Stratosphere. Pricey but awesome food, service and VIEWS!

You MUST try Emeril's restaurant, Delmonico! Fabulous!!!!!! Again, $$, but SO worth it.

If you like seafood, the Seafood Bufffet at Rio is the BEST!

Other buffets to try...Aladdin for Lunch or Dinner, Bellagio, Paris for Bfast (yum!!)

Shows- O, CELINE (been many times!), V, Danny Gans, Carrot Top (if you like his type of humor), Mystere

There is So very much to see and do. There is a chat board like this one about Vegas you should visit... www.travel2vegas.com LOTS of info on there.

I am sure I ccould write a TON more...

PM if you have any other ?s..been there probably every year at least once over the past 10 years.

have fun! :thumbsup2

I think Jubilee is the better show, but FB is much easier to get discount or even free tickets to. Usually the Trop is running a promotion allowing you to get free tickets if you sign up for their slot club.

There are a couple of 2-1 or 25% off places on the strip. You won't see Cirque or any of the big name shows for sale, but plently of lesser shows.

I loved Harrah's. We stayed there two years ago. It was a great location, the rooms were pleasantly decorated. The resturaunt choices were good. We are staying at Bally's this time, we will be going in less then two weeks. You can get good deals through usair.com and go to the vacation package option.
We also stayed at Treasure Island before, but it has changed since then, or so I heard. We did like it when we stayed there. MGM was nice also, but was not at an ideal location on the strip.

We leave on Saturday for Vegas :cheer2: and we're staying at the Venetian again.

Our last trip we stayed at MGM, Venetian, and Hyatt-Regency Lake Las Vegas. Loved the Hyatt-Regency and Venetian, will skip MGM on all future trips, wasn't my style. I prefer my bed not smell like alcohol  The Venetian was a lovely change of pace, the rooms are huge, service was excellent. We booked our first night through Priceline for $99 a night, we decided we liked it so much we booked our second night there on the spot! There was a billing error after we got home which they fixed right away and instead of billing us the $149 for the second night they changed it to $99 for the second night. :thumbsup2 We're quite happy to give them our business again, this time without the kids! :dance3:

Check out cheapo vegas the reviews are fun and break things down nicely with a good amount of information!

I'll put in another vote for Jubilee! It's definitley the quintessential Las Vegas revue. If you do decide to book it, pay the extra $10 a ticket and book yourselves on the backstage tour in the afternoon. It's so cool to go backstage and see all the sets, all the costumes and headpieces, and all of the other neat things that go into putting the show together. It's such an interesting tour--you'll appreciate the show even more.

And, again, I just can't plug LOVE enough. It's such a beautiful, fun, innovative, and entertaining interpretation of the Beatles music! I can't wait to do it again!!!

Sherri -
We stayed at Bally's last year when we went to LV. We loved it because the rooms were extra-large, so we weren't tripping over each other and also because it wasn't themed, so it was crazy to get in and out of.

To others going - we did rent a car, which we used when we were traveling further from Bally's, which is conveniently located in the middle of the strip across from the Bellagio.
Other than that we walked everywhere and worked in sections so that we saw everything within that area. I'm a planner when it comes to trips, and highly recommending reading up on LV before going. I found LV for dummies was the most informative.

We did see the Celine Dion show and it was fantastic!!

Another fun stop was the Madame Tussauds wax museum located at the Venetian. It's interactive and since my DH and DD aren't shy, we have lots of pic's of them clowning around :clown: with the figures. They were cracking up other people walking through the museum. I highly recommend this!

Enjoy - LV isn't WDW, but it can be a lot of fun too :thumbsup2

Wow you guys are the greatest! Thanks for all the info. I see I have a lot of decisions and a lot of planning. Good thing I'm starting early. I am actually not planning on going in June. I will be retiring in June but plan on late September or early October for the LV trip. Can't believe I am getting excited about planning something other than a Disney trip. We will be going to Florida several months after our Vegas trip for Spring training and WDW. I think I'm going to like being retired :Pinkbounc

Tickets 4 Tonight is on the strip adjoining M&M World and inside the building where the giant Coke bottle is. Can't miss it. They open at 12:00 noon and sell tickets for half price for shows that night. They have many of the big ones too! Also grab a coupon book at your hotel, airport, or one of the casinos and you can get an additional $2 off per ticket!

They will give you a voucher with a time on it, and you must take it to the show before that time to get an actual ticket with an assigned seat. We didn't have any problems and got a great deal!

Just be sure to give them the coupon before handing over your credit card or they will refuse to take it! Vegas could definitely use a little pixie dust. :lmao:

Tickets for Tonight also has half price on exhibits, not just shows. I know they had half price for the Titanic exhibition at Tropicana, and the aquarium at Mandalay Bay. :cool1:
