Ideas to Get More Involved in the Disney Community

Hi there Dis-ers. Here's my story and my reason for posting:

I've been an avid Disney World fan since I was 5. I used to pretend to give lessons on Disney World when I was little. Now that I'm grown up, I read anything I can on Disney World and Disneyland, I subscribe to 8 podcasts on the subject (the Dis Unplugged being my favorite, of course!), and I watch all the Travel Channel specials.

In October I got the chance to go with my best friend's family to WDW and kind of acted as their tour guide and I loved every second of it, because I got to share all of the knowledge I have stored up for 25 years. Now I'm trying to find a way to get more involved in the Disney community and am coming up short on ideas. Unfortunately getting a job with Disney is not an option for me right now, and I doubt they would be hiring anyway. I was an English major in college so I love to write, but I'm in the midwest so I don't get down there nearly enough to be able to write a blog or reviews or anything. I love to read and copyedit things, but I don't know of anyone that needs a volunteer for that.

Maybe I'm grasping at straws, but I know all of you on here are Disney fans too, so I hope you have some ideas. Even if no one can think of anything, thanks for listening. It is great to know there are other people who share the same interest in Disney that I do.

Check with your local high schools to determine if they offer adult education classes. Many AE program offer classes that are more hobby than education. Maybe you can offer to teach classes on Disney, especially vacation planning. Perhaps you can even tie this in with local travel agents.

As for working for Disney, don't discount the possibility. They are hiring and have over 100 positions available right now.

Is there a chapter of the NFFC Disneyana Fan Club in your area? If there is, you may want to check it out to meet fellow Disney fans. Chapters plan special Disney-themed activites and also support local and national charities. Our chapter has monthly meetings; plans field trips to Disney films, Disneyland, and The Walt Disney Family Museum, and contributes to Make-a-Wish, Toys for Tots and Give Kids the World. Chapters always need volunteers for their newletters, websites, coordinating activites, community outreach, etc. It's a lot of fun and may spark some ideas for you.

They also have national events in Anaheim, Orlando and other places across the country.

Below is the link to the national website. Just a heads up that they are in the process of constructing a new website, so they have not been very diligent about keeping this one updated, so you may want to check back every so often. I hope you find something that interests you!
