Hey all, I am going back to school to begin Grad School in the field of Hospitality-tourism management. Obviously, I don't need to begin my thesis now, but i figured it would be a great time to get some ideas. So if any hotel people or general people who travel and stay in hotels a lot, have ideas with regard to that, please do share. Also, I can work on it a little bit, and save time later on..

I have a few ideas, such as RFID (radio frequency devices in hotels) which would allow guests/customers to purchase things via a RFID, in essence, walletless travelling (got the idea from a hotel magazine).

Another idea is a more personal idea, being that I am a deaf person who has experience working at front desk, obviously talking on the phone won't work out, and can't be alone at the desk due to the phone ringing.. many smaller sized hotels (less than 500 rooms) don't want to accomodate by adding a 2nd person at the desk to assist with phone calls, especially those with low business levels, etc. I was thinking, would someone talk via aim as opposed to the phone? If you have experience at FD, would that be helpful, if the hotel does not or did not have a PBX person?

Any other ideas/suggestions? I am open to pretty much anything. I would prefer something that someone else has NOT written about.. I am looking to be unique, as opposed to a copycat, in a manner of speaking.:thumbsup2

Do you know how RSS Feeds work? Were I you, I'd subscribe to several, such as: http://www.hospitalitynet.org/rss.html and http://www.hfbexecutive.com/blog/

There are others as well, but those are two that I have setup. These are great because you'll get the latest news, articles, and commentary from the hospitality/food & beverage industries delivered daily. (Mine comes into my Microsoft Outlook).

Since a thesis (I think) should answer questions related to the needs of the present (and the future) you'll get a good idea of what's being discussed in this business from those feeds. From what I've seen, environmental sustainability is big, as is productivity, especially with food prices on the rise and the increasing cost of labor. Even though all these things have been written about, they deserve more study and you'll come across lots of unanswered questions where you can chart new territory.

Even if you don't get a thesis idea, reading industry publications is a great idea anyway!

Good luck!

Thanks for the info.. I am not as techno savvy as you, so how do you get it to send you info to your email? do i need to register? I like that idea.. environmental sustainable...obviously with global warming, and so forth, need to find a way to make hotels more environmentally sustainable.. fortunately, my college has an institute of sustainability on campus.. worth taking a look at..altho most hotels have worked on being sustainable, i.e. temperature control in rooms, type of lightbulbs, but always room to improve on that, find ways to minimize cost, yet being more environmentally friendly.. not a bad idea...

if anyone else has ideas, keep them coming.. like i always say, THABTO...2 heads are better than one..:)
