I posted this over on the Theme Parks board first, but thought I might reach other people here. I just booked the Rookie experience for Dave on Sept 17th and have no idea how or when to tell him. I thought about telling him on the plane, but ruled that one out because I know he is going to really flip out.

I'm pretty crafty so I thought about making some kind of invitation type thing. ??? I don't know whether to tell him before we leave or after we get there. He is having a really rough week at work and I thought about telling him today just to make his days until we go a little more tolerable.

I'm so excited I'm just going to pop! He really respects and admires Mark Martin and he will be thrilled to experience the same type of things Mark does.

Any ideas? I'm too excited to even thing straight! I don't know how long I can keep this a secret!

They will be sending you paperwork!

Why not just hand it over to him when you receive it!

Basically have to sign your life away so it's adviseable to have it done beforehand!LOL

You'll have to tell us how it was!

I've booked for December 29th! Can hardly wait!

Or you could buy him one of those little Hot Wheels cars and give it to him.

Make a puzzle out of a pick and make him put it together!

I was thinking of a matchbox car too...wrap it up and put a note in the box and give it to him when you get there or on the plane...he may see it in the xray monitor though if you put it in your carry-on bag! LOL! What a great gift!

It would be too cool if you could somehow get him "pulled over" by a police officer who could then hand him the paperwork because he needed to "keep it off the streets"

I know... too far fetched.

Perhaps write him a long poem or letter going on and on about how wonderful he is and how great he is and how marvelous he is and how there's just this one little thing that you think he would need to do to be just absolutely perfect and so, hope he doesn't mind that you went ahead and made the arrangements because you just know that he's the kind of guy that would do absolutely anything to make you happy and this would make you SOOOOO happy for him to do just this one little thing and it wouldn't take so very long for him to do it, and you're just going to hate to be away from him for even that amount of time, but after all, you really do think that this'll be good for him and what's good for him and is good for you must just have to be good for the two of you and oh, yeah, I haven't told you what it is that I want you to do and I guess I really should especially since I've already made all the arrangements for you to.....go to the Richard Petty Experience...!

:)

I would say a hot wheels, or even better, and remote control car, or even a die cast car of his favorite driver. Talk to a CM at your resort and have them place the car on your bed with the tickets in it. When you come in to your room, just let him flip out then! Have fun no matter how you do it, and have a great trip!

I was going to say a hot wheels or one of those action scale model cars...

He's got good taste. Mark Martin is my favorite driver, too!

You guys are full of ideas! Thanks! I'm working on a plan right now and I have a little bit of help to make it work. I'll try to get a picture of his reaction when he finds out and I'll post it when we get back.

This is going to be an awesome trip. :sunny:

BTW....as I mentioned in another thread...I am not a religious person by far, and I haven't prayed in years, but my prayers are going out now for everyone in the path of Frances. Stay safe.

Take him to an arcade or even a Chucky Cheese. Look for one of those video games with the steering wheels, pedals etc... (Like Daytona, Crusin). Challenge him to a game. Try to beat him, and after the game is over, ask him "Wouldn't it be fun to do that in real life." As the conversation winds down, spring the gift on him.

Or take him to a "Malibu grand prix" (the one around here closed a long time ago) and do the same thing. There are some tracks that are indoors and you can race go carts.

Or, Mark Martin used to have his face on a bag of Bugles. Maybe he endorses something else, but put your gift in the package (kind of like a prize in the Cracker Jack box).

DH was given a similar gift, and he happened to have some racing gear for his own racing experiences. I snuck his fire suit and driving gloves, and we wrapped them once we were there with his certificate for the school. His face was really funny as he opened the package. First he thought it was new stuff, then he noticed it was "kind of dirty" and then realized it was his own racing gear. He didn't really get it for a few minutes, and then saw the certificate and why we had packed it. For the school he went to he needed his own gear, you don't for Richard Petty. Does he maybe have driving gloves? Or can you get a pair for him? Or call some race shops in your area and see if they have any old, throw away stuff you can buy for cheap or borrow?
