Ideas for San Diego in August . . .

Hi all!

I just booked our San Diego Vacation for this summer - August 12-19, 4 nights at Hotel Del Coronado and 3 nights at La Costa in Carlsbad - I figure we'll do the Zoo and Balboa Park while we're in Coronado, Seaworld on the day we check out of Coronado, and Legoland and the Wild Animal Park while we're at La Costa. Other than that rough framework, I'm open to any and all suggestions for other things to do, places to go and restaurants in both places. On the trip will be me and DH, and DS(almost 9). We will be renting a car the whole time.

TIA and I look forward to reading ideas!

I've only visited SD 2 times in the last 8 years and we are headed back for 6 days leaving this Saturday.

We will be visiting Mission Beach and La Jolla Beach. La Jolla is very nice just to visit and walk through the shopping district.

You may also want to visit Old Town. A lot of nice shops, restaurants, and attractions.

How about a Padres game? We are going to a game on June 10th. The city of SD built a new stadium for the Padres and it opened last year. Should be beautiful. Since you are going in August you maybe able to see a Chargers pre-season game.

Hotel Del is beautiful. You will love that! La Costa is not bad either! Enjoy your trip!

La Jolla Shores is a really nice beach, especially if you have kids. There is a parking lot, and they have lifeguards and bathrooms with showers to wash off the sand. There is also plenty of stuff nearby - Scripps Aquarium, movie theaters, food, shopping, etc.

Downtown La Jolla has lots of shops and places to eat. The Children's Pool is also really fun - it is a beach where a bunch of seals have made their home, and you can get pretty close and watch them. Usually there are tons of them up on the beach.

The Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego has lots of shops and restaurants.

If you take the ferry over from Coronado, there's tons of stuff within walking distance. Seaport Village, and a few little boat museums that you can tour (including the Midway, an aircraft carrier that's supposed to be pretty cool). It's also a short cab ride from the downtown/gaslamp area.

Ok...I'm back!

We did the Padres game which was great! Seattle won 4 to 3 on a bad call by the home plate umpire!

What we really enjoyed:
Sea Port Village...Very picturesque.
Coronado Island..Just beautiful! Hotel Del was fantastic. We had Margaritas on the deck!
Mexican Dinner at Old Town. Great dining experience.
We spent most of our time at Mission Beach where we were staying in a condo. About 30 yards from the beach. It was great, but the June Gloom was in full affect in the AM and early PM.

Have a great trip....Enjoy the sun and fun in SD.

Sounds like you had fun!

The Rockin' Baja restaurant in Old Town is my most favorite ever. But really you can't go wrong with Old Town. Everything is delicious.

We went to the Midway when we were there and I can't wait to go back again! The boys loved it and DH, too. But, DD wasn't interested. Was one of the few miserable moments on our trip. We did the harbor cruise/midway combo and were surprised at how much we really liked the cruise. Go early, as the Midway closes at 4 or thereabouts and they won't allow anyone in after a certain time. They give you headphones to take the tour and you hear about the different areas of the ship by the men and women who served on it. The docents all served on it as well and love talking about it.
Didn't make it to Balboa park, but that's one I'd really like to do. WAP was a bit of a dud for us, but it was HOT and long long lines for the tram.
