Ideas for NonPark Day???

I know I'm cutting it close here... leaving next Wednesday (3/28) to Monday (4/2) -- have three day hoppers. Plan to take one nonpark day. I have two questions.
1. Which is best day to stay out of parks -- saturday or sunday?
2. I want to do something, "California-ish" with the kids on the day off. But What?

They are 8 - 7 - 6 - 4 ... not sure I'm up for hauling out to San Diego. I am going on the assumption we'll have other chances to come back and see the Zoo/SW... I don't want to do a rush job of that... so what does that leave?
Beach? Won't it be too cold to really go to the beach?
Knotts/Universal? Maybe... but I was thinking non-amusement park stuff.
Hollywood Sign, Walk of Fame? Is this worth doing with kids?

Help!!! I am so undecided I'm afraid I'll end up with no plan and blow the day trying to decide!

Well if you decided to go up to Sandiego, they have day tours. A bus picks you and the kids up at your hotel or wherever you are staying, takes you to Sandiego for the day to enjoy the Zoo and then picks you up at the park and drives you and the kids back to your hotel.

If not, Knottsberry farm might be fun

Go to LA and sightsee!! Make a lunch or dinner stop at PINKS and you are SOOOO Californian!!! LOOOOOOOOOVE Pinks!!! Going to try and stop there on way back from trip in April. MMMMMMMM!!!

I can't go to CA without spending some time at the beach, even if I can't swim. The water there is usually a little cool for me anyway. There are still lots of things to do at the beach, besides swimming. You could picnic, there's shopping and some good places to eat. I like to drive down the PCH from beach to beach (Newport, Huntington, Seal, etc). DH and I did that and it was a great time.
