Ideas for keeping dry on water rides and in the rain

I have been trying to come up with ideas of how to keep your shoes and socks dry on the water rides.

My husband and I don't like to haul bags or packs full of stuff like flip-flops, ponchos etc around the parks all day, or have to bother with using lockers either. We prefer to just use fannypacks around our waist. And it's such a hassle to keep taking your shoes and socks off all the time.

I read about putting your feet into garbage/plastic bags, but that sounds a bit awkward and there's always the danger of slipping over.

So I was thinking of something you can just easily slip over each sneaker. Maybe a large shower cap?? The disposable thinner type may break, but what about the proper "permanent" shower caps you find in drugstores etc that are made of thicker plastic?

Before you leave home you could adapt them into shoe covers by cutting a slit from one edge to roughly the centre of the shower cap (ie approx halfway across the cap). Then the cap could be slipped over your shoe, tucking the elastic edges under the sole.

You could also attach a thick piece of elastic from one edge of the cap to the other, so the elastic would be underneath your sole and help keep the cap in place. The slit you have cut means that the cap can go around your ankle (the slit would be attached together around your heel). I hope I am explaining everything clearly!!

Then you would attach velcro (or something similar) to each side of the slit, so you could attach the cap securely around your heel. You could make several of these shoe covers before you leave home, in case you break or lose them.

It would be so easy to just slip them on before the ride and quickly remove them on your way out. Who cares if people give you funny looks? At least your feet are dry and you are quickly on your way!!

The only problem I can see is if someone in your party has very large feet. Maybe you could join 2 caps together, or make some large covers out of some type of similar plastic, eg shower curtain material, and attach elastic.

You could also use a shower cap to put over your fannypack too. Even if your shoes or fannypack still get slightly wet, it's still better than if they were totally soaked!!

I like this whole idea because the shower caps are very light and you can just fold them up and put them in your fanny pack or pockets.

I also prefer to buy those very light thin rain ponchos from $1 stores or drugstores etc, as opposed to buying those big thick plastic ones from Disney. Instead of having to haul around the Disney ones or put them in a locker, you can just put the light poncho in your fannypack or pocket along with the shoe covers. Just make sure you fold them neatly and they won't take up much room. Because they're so cheap you can buy several in case one tears or gets lost.

I was also wondering if sporting or boating stores may sell some type of shoe covers? They would have to be very thin though, not those bulky type of covers that you can put over hiking boots etc.

Has anyone else got any ideas about keeping dry? :umbrella:

Just get some Goulloshes (spelling bad) from Samsonite store they slip over shoes and fold up easy .You can get them in Shoe or Boot form.

I think your shower cap idea is good...and it made me think of something else.

When my DS5 was being born, I went into the labor delivery room with my wife. Well...I had to wash my hands, put scrubs on, and put these shoe protector things on (basically looked like shower caps).

I don't remember if they were plastic or some type of wax paper or what...so, I don't know if they were actually water proof.

So...my point is....you could maybe check on the web or at a local medical supply shop for some of these "shoe protectors" that the doctors use in surgery.

I wear a size 12 and I remember the hospital having different sizes for these "shoe protectors"....like Large, X-Large, etc. That may solve the problem of having to put 2 shower caps together for someone with larger feet.

Maybe someone on this board that might work in the medical profession could give you more info on this...

I quickly googled "plastic shoe covers" and found this link.

Hope this helps...

Why don't you just put big ziplock baggies over your feet. Heck we use them for everything else at WDW! :rotfl2:

We leave on Tuesday for WDW, and I just bought a pair of Crocs. Now it won't matter if my feet get wet. They are so comfortable. I have been wearing them all day, and I don't usually keep shoes on my feet when inside the house.

We were at wdw recently & it rained sporadically for several days. I was so happy we splurged on the Crocs. :flower:

What are Crocs?

Can someone point me to the thread about using baggies at WDW?

We are going next Wednesday to Magic Kingdom in Florida.

Cat - there's a thread on this board titled, "Okay, so what the heck are crocs?" It was just posted tonight. Read that and you can even see a picture of them. They are silly looking shoes, but so comfy!

My DW and 2xDD's love their Croc's... me, I've got a pair of Teva's (sports
sandals) that I wear when we go to the AK. I also wear Supplex(tm) sport
shorts and a shirt that dries out quickly. I put all my electronics in ziplocs
and do the same to my wallet. If I get wet, which is what happened the last
2 times that I went on Kali! I just laugh and dry out in the nearest restroom.

As far as rain goes, I use one of the silly WDW ponchos, and wear my
Teva's. We do tend to pack a bit heavier than just fanny packs (bum bags for
you in the UK)... we carry our DVC bag with maybe dry shirts in more!
Ziplocs..

Thanks for the tips everybody. Much appreciated!

Speedyf, those thin waterproof medical/industrial shoe covers are a great idea. I looked around the internet and all the websites only seem to sell them in big lots of 100 or more. I wonder where you can buy just a few? I'll have to check the yellow pages for actual stores.

tmt martins, I searched for Samsonite on the internet but couldn't find anything like the golloshes you mentioned. I only found luggage/travel etc stuff. Do they have an actual store you can go to?

Actually, it's galoshes, and your Dad probably wore them back in the 50's. Samsonite might still make them, but as I recall, they were a pia to stretch onto your shoes - I can't imagine that they would be a good choice. I tried to Google them, and couldn't come up with much.

When I'm really concerned about it, I stop at a gift shop and ask for 2 plastic bags. I pop them on, ride the ride, then toss 'em. Most of the time, I don't worry too much.

Yes, plastic bags would be the simplest thing I suppose. We could hold them securely in place with large rubberbands around our ankles. Maybe the supermarket type of plastic bags would be the best. I'm just concerned that some types of bags might be a bit awkward and you may slip over (like if you use those shiney-type bags from clothing stores etc).

I really don't mind getting soaked in summer, but this time we're going in December and we don't want to be wet all day. Wet sneakers are such a pain, but we do prefer to wear sneakers because they are so comfortable compared to wearing sandals etc for a long time.

Are you serious?? If I see you you will know it's me because I will be the one :rotfl2: :rotfl2: at you!

I wear a small coach over the shoulder bag to the parks. It holds my camera, park passes and room key. If it rains we buy ponchos and baseball caps. When it stops raining the poncho gets folded up small and goes into my coach bag. For shoes, I wear sneakers which have mesh tops. I have never seen WDW flood so bad that my shoes get soaked...even on water rides they don't get wet.

What is the big deal :umbrella:

Personally, we think the key is to wear waterproof shoes. I like Merrell water sandals or Keens. DD and DH have Teva sandals. We wear these rain or shine as our "regular" touring shoes. If rain is a possibility, we carry our Goretex jackets for DH and I (they pack up super small) and DD's Columbia rain jacket. (We bought those jackets 10 years or so ago and they are still fabulous, well worth the price.) Those, plus a few waters and some small snacks for DD fit into a medium sized messenger bag and we're good to go at WDW :umbrella: or :sunny: .
