Can anyone share some ideas for breakfast in the rooms? My boys typically eat oatmeal every day, but there's no microwave!! Other than cereal and yogurt, I can't think of much. Any suggestions to provide a healthy start to our days? I'm sure we can pick things up in the parks, but with the little ones, I'll need to put something in their tummies before we get going, but I also don't always want to take the time to get them to the food court.

will your room have a coffee maker? i haven't tried it yet but i saw on the food network show "good eats" that you can make oatmeal with a coffee maker. didn't catch all the details but you could probably google it.

I bring along a small hotpot, you can boil water for the oatmeal. I also use it to make coffee w/ a cone filter over a mug, cup of soup and tea.

We also take granola bars and frosted mini wheats. Both work well for breakfast or for park snacks. Sometimes I pack mini juice boxes (double ziplock bagged), depends on how much room I have in suitcase.

Oatmeal-to-go bars are a decent substitution for regular oatmeal. I like to make sure my family gets a good combination of protein and carbs for energy for the parks--yogurt, oatmeal bar, and a piece of fruit (usually a banana, but DD(10) must have his apple every morning) with milk.

Which resort are you staying in? I know many of the resorts have microwave's in the main hall area that you could use! Either you or DH could go with the boys oatmeal in the morning and heat it up while the other stays behind with your little ones :)

What about the small, portion sized boxed cereal? Or bring a box in your suitcase. That's our plan next month along with ordering milk, fruit and other perishables through Garden Grocer.

We're staying at CBR- so yes there will be a coffee pot. The coffee pot or hot pot might be good solutions! :thumbsup2 I hadn't thought of the oatmeal to go bars- I wonder if the boys would eat those?? Hmm....

THanks folks! Great ideas! :thumbsup2

You can use the coffee pot to make grits, just run the water through as if making coffee, just dont add the coffee grounds. Since you have a fridge you can yogurt or cereal. If you are driving you can bring a toaster with you, we do, and then we buy cinnamon bread or just plain bread and purchase the shedds spread cinnamon butter. Pop tarts are a good start along with some muffins. Also having some fruit is a good addition. Hope this helps.

DH and I have an immersion heating coil that boils water like a champ! Costs around $13. Looks like a power cord, with the plug on one end and a metal coil on the other. Works quickly, cleans and packs easily. I think we purchased ours from Magellan's but I've seen them in stores too.

You can make oatmeal no problem :thumbsup2 Just run water through the coffee maker (without adding grounds to the basket). When its finished, just pour the hot water into the mug with instant oatmeal and wala! breakfast is served.

The last time my DD8 and I went down, I packed an entire suitcase of food...cereal, juice, snacks, fruit, cups and bowls.... When the week was done, we had an empty suitcase to then fill back up with stuff we bought.

I brought a toaster and hotpot down last September.
Before I left the room each day, I put the cool appliances away (ie out of sight) just to be discreet.

It was great for the morning cup of tea and toast. I could easily have used hotpot to boil eggs, make porridge or re heat tin food in as well.
It was also great to have a cup of tea in the evening!:coffee:

We drive, so I'm able to pack quite a bit for breakfast and snacks. In the past we have taken pop tarts, cereal bars, muffins, donuts, fruit, juice, cereal, and milk. You can get ultra-pastuerized milk that comes in cartons and can sit on the shelf without being refrigerated before it is opened. I bring that and then put the carton in the room fridge once we open it. Individual bottles of juice and handy. I pack disposable bowls, napkins, and spoons. I also bring granola bars and things like that to carry with us in the parks for times we need a "pick-me-up" between meals. When we leave we have more room for souvenirs.

That's exactly what we're doing. I'm also baking muffins and coffee cakes for a little variety.

Running the water through the coffee pot isn't a bad idea, but you need to run MANY pots through before it stops tasting like coffee.

We stayed at CBR last year and brought a box of instant oatmeal packets, a bowl and a spoon for my son. We also brought pop tarts and fiber one bars for ourselves. In the morning we would walk to the food court for coffee and would just use the hot water that was there for tea to make my son oatmeal.

We are early risers and really enjoyed the morning walk.

On our trip to the POLY, I made baked oatmeal ahead of time and packed that. It's a healthy, yummy and filling alternative to oatmeal in a bowl and traveled well.

Cereal, fruit, yogurt, granola bars, "power" bars, donuts, peanut butter sandwiches, juice, muffins.

I also like to pick up bakery treats at the parks to eat the next morning for breakfast. Keep an eye out for chocolate chip muffins - they're great!

No problem. It's really easy to make, but since I make it so often I actually prepare my own "mixes" by premeasuring all of the dry ingredients into a large ziploc bag.

2 cup uncooked oatmeal
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp table salt
1 cup fat-free skim milk
2 eggs
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 to 1/2 cup Splenda or sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 Tbsp ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine wet ingredients and add dry ingredients. Bake in sprayed 8" square pan for 35 minutes.
