ideas for house warming gifts?

If you really know the person's taste, then I try to get something that reflects that. Otherwise I go with a plant, either a houseplant or a plant they can put in the yard, or a basket of goodies, or a basket of stuff you need when you own a house (flashlight, screwdriver, a couple of candles, matches, duct tape, string, elaxstic bands etc).

avoid Yankee Candles "home sweet home" candle.
I received about 4 full sized ones when we moved into our new home! hehehe

My dad recently gave us an outside trash barrel filled up with household supplies, flashlights, batteries, calculators, tools etc.

I also like making gift baskets for people with candles.

A Yankee Candle jar candle in a nice scent!

It really depends on how close you are to this person, and if this is their first home or not. DH and I had never really lived away from home before we bought our house last year so many of the things we received were very practical items: shovel, rake, bucket w/ cleaning supplies, money. (we also got a lot off our wedding registry, but that's another thing entirely)

If this is the first house, or home, I like the bucket of cleaning supplies--those things are expensive! If it's someone close to you, the garbage can filled with practicalities is great.

If you're looking for something that's "not so practical" pineapples are the "Welcome" fruit.
Willow Tree also has a great line of figurines and plaques that are very unique. They have an "Angel of Welcoming" or something like that. www.demdaco.com Edited to add: Willow Tree figurines can be purchased at most Hallmark stores or similar places.

I didn't really like getting candles for our housewarming. But maybe that's just me and scented candles. If you like candles, or more importantly the home owner does, check out www.bullfroglightco.com they have great candles that glow when lit!

smoke alarms and a very good quality all rating fire extinguisher!

No home should be without them!

I would get a gift card from Walmart, Target or Bath and Beyond (etc.). That way the new homeowners could choose something that they really need.

This may be cheesy, but I've given a good friend a small appliance before. If you know what they have and don't have, try something out-of-the-ordinary. A smoothie maker, pizza stone, or something along those lines.

Something for the outside may be nice too. A mosaic garden table, windchimes, a birdfeeder, or things like that.

I have to say the best housewarming gift we got was the tricked out outdoor extension cord from my uncle. And the unkinkable hose.

A gourmet gift basket is always good with some wine and snacks and maybe a candle or a gc to a local hot spot in their new neighborhood. Or a bird feeder or windchimes

I like to give flowering plants. Something that does not need alot of special care. Most women like flowers around the house.

I like the birdfeeder idea too. I also like a gift basket full of goodies. Of course the supply and lawn tools thing is good too.

LOL. Sorry, I'm not much help now that I re-read this. :)

My friends recently retired and moved into a smaller retirement home. At Pier One I bought potpourri, a basket to put it in and spray room scent (same scent as the potpourri) and they loved it!
