I am trying to plan a four day weekend getaway for dh and I to the Maine coast in Sept. Any ideas/suggestions? I was looking at b and b's in the York area because there is a cool cooking school there. Also maybe a theatre or a whale watching cruise. Help me!

First I'd suggest looking just a little further north to the Ogunquit area, many more palces to choose from. Is the cooking school you're looking into at Stonewall Kitchen? If so it's only a little further. Ogunquit has better restaurants and more shops. There are whale watching cruses out of Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. There is also the Ogunquit playhouse, I think singin' in the rain is playin there in Sept.

Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park area would be my recomendation.

and as long as you're in Bar Harbor, stop in at the Bar Harbor Brewing Co for some fine beer.

The Camden/Rockland area is great in the fall. In Maine, we call those visitors leaf peepers ;) There are lots of little museums, and the Farnsworth Art museum. It has a great art collection including Weyth paintings. http://www.farnsworthmuseum.org/
If you are looking for B&Bs Camden has tons of really cute ones

It is also driving distance from many other destinations in Maine.

Thanks all! I actually was looking at the Stonewall Kitchens and I had looked at the Oqunquit area. I forget what was playing in September but I remember it stars Sally Struthers.
How late in the season do the whale watching cruises go? Is this generally a more smooth or more rough seas kind of thing? Anyone else have any Maine ideas?
