[edited to add: NOT looking for a full costume!]

My DD will be just-turned 14 when we go to WDW next in 2014. She would like to "dress up" but feels too old for the "Full-out Princess" thing (gown, etc) of her early years. She was thinking maybe a little bit of a girl-Pirate look.

Anyone have any experiences/ideas?

Its not really dress up but my dd 15 really loves all the Disney leggings and tanks that are out in the the stores now. Unfortunately she wants the leggings but we are going next week and it will be too hot for them :(

My daughter was Cruella Deville, they have a really cute tween costume. She got lot of compliments. She is being Donald Duck(her favorite) this year but making up her own costume. My oldest daughter at around that age was tinkerbell.

Check out the Disney Parks blog. They just posted Trendy Style outfits today and have outfit ideas in previous posts.

Are you talking about one of the Halloween events, or a regular park day? If it's a regular park day, she can't wear a princess dress anyways. WDW has strict rules about costumed guests, and she could get turned away at the gate. Depends on how dressed up she is. As she is an 'adult' in Disney's eyes, she can't resemble anyone who could be mistaken as a character, and the CMs have the right to deny entrance, as they have the right to set the policy.

Not sure if you're looking for full costumes or a regular day outfit but me & DD have princess *inspired* outfits for our regular MK day. She wanted Ariel so she has green shorts, purple tank top & we got some temporary red hair spray that I'll put in highlights in her hair that morning, and add some seashell trinket jewelry. I'm dressing as Snow White - yellow shorts, blue top & red bow.

When we do DHS DD is dressing like Boo from Monsters Inc - purple knee length leggings, long pink shirt & I made a Mike Wizowsky nylon backpack. I'm going to dress like Ms. Piggy - loud pink tank top & a feather boa hair bow...anyway, just giving ideas she can maybe run with. I promise i dress like a grownup normally LOL I got these ideas from Pinterest & I think Polyvore was the original creation site they came from.

For MNSSHP I would tell her to go all out if she wanted - many grown women go in full gowns so the possibilities there are endless!

Just a regular park day. Not for Halloween.

No, NOT looking for a full costume As I said in my OP, SHE feels she is too old for that, so even if there weren't rules against it, she wouldn't want to! She doesn't intend to look like a real Princess (or other character) any more than a kid wearing Mickey ears looks like a real Mickey! :)

Just looking for some Disney "inspired" touches to add to reg clothing, plus maybe a modest headpiece/hat.

Thanks to all who gave suggestions! I'm cutting and pasting them to a document! Keep 'em coming! .....and I will def check out that Disney Parks blog!

found this pintrest (DisneyBound) in a comment below one of the Disney Blog pages!
This is EXACTLY what she is looking for!
Of course the high heels are out, as well as the outifts that are not age-appropriate for DD, but still, lots of good ideas to bounce off of!

Thanks for putting me on the right track!! :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 yep those are the Pinterest posts that got us started!!! :) tell her to have fun above all and that grown adult women like myself will look far more ridiculous if she's thinking she'd be spotted at all, I'm sure she can "pull it off" way better than I could!! But the only way to get my DD to embrace enjoying acting like the actual kid she is was to embrace it myself with her. Otherwise she would have been "too cool" to do it herself....I dread in a couple years that will be reversed & she'll hate just walking into the grocery store with me - wearing matching outfits in a huge public venue? She'll probably say she would die of embarrassment :(

Good luck!!!

There are lots of ways to dress up in the park to make her feel special. My daughter wore and all white lace, strapless short dress (from abercrombie) and a small tiara with her hair in a bun, she also wore bright pink converse to match the pink stones in the tiara. She is only 10 but feels to old to wear a costume in the park. The cute dress that she picked out herself and tiara in her hair was enough for her.

Check out Disneybound's tumblr as well (disneybound.tumblr.com). They have fan photos and most people are wearing flats or sandals with their outfits, since they'll be walking around the parks. Often the fan-created outfits are a little less complex and you may get some more ideas for what you can do with what your daughter already owns.

Another site worth looking at is magicalribbons.com. She makes beautiful bows (to wear in your hair or on Minnie ears) that are inspired by rides, characters, and the parks. You do have to order in advance since she makes all of them to order, but I think they would make a great touch to a character-inspired outfit.

I see my daughter as being a grown lady with kids of her own and still doing this! She very fondly remembers all the toddler/little girl gowns she wore on previous trips and doesn't want to fully give that up. (She is a card-carrying Disney-Maniac!) So these ideas will help her to continue the tradition! Who knows, maybe I will get the courage to join her! These http://pinterest.com/pin/373446994071663002/ look like something I could wear myself and reminded me of your 1st post on this thread. I love the idea of a seashell necklace and could make one of my own as I have a ton of shells from years of beach trips!

Love that idea! I'm all about white, feminine/lacey things, esp in summertime! :thumbsup2

Going to check those out TODAY! I am so ready to start this NOW and yet there are so many more important, more pending things I should tend to! All the more incentive to power through my day, crossing stuff off of my list so tonight I can explore this further!

Thanks to all! ::yes::

You totally should!!! Where else can you dress like a cartoon character & NOT get weird stares or snarky whispers about needing to be in a mental hospital?? Lol - I am looking forward to it the more we get into the outfits for each park. I'm loving the pooh bear outfit, he was my favorite as a kid - I might recycle my yellow shorts & do that on AK day!! DD can be piglet!!

Just be careful & make sure you get the green light from the teenager to join in the fun, or she might trump the whole thing for fear of embarrassment - I can't believe I used to be THAT teen, ugh!!

Happy planning!!!

Ours likes the Disney fashion. Similar prints to Minnie, Daisy or blinded out shirt with the headband ears.

oh no, just the opposite! she wants me to join in! We sat on my bed for hours last night looking at Disneybounding and coming up with ideas. She remembered a red Hawaiian-print, short, cotton dress I have and said "That would be perfect for Lilo!" So that will be mine for our AK day. Will just stick a flower in my hair and maybe some shell jewelry ... done! She also loves the idea of dressing in an attraction or ride inspired outfit.... like Tower of Terror.
My husband was watching us and pointed to the laptop saying, "You guys aren't really going to dress like that are you?" umm.... YUP! :lmao:

Lol!! That's awesome!! I hope my DD will also still love coordinating with me when she hits HS. She's 10 now, going on 20 tho, so I'm just treasuring every chance I can get to still be "cool" to her in case I somehow become the biggest dweeb ever when she hits 14. Dressing like attractions sounds fun too, I might have to check that out!! I'll admit I saw the princesses outfits & my ADHD just went flying on its own
