I wasnt even going to post this idea here (figured it wasnt worthy of the boardmates all mighty knowledge :D ) but my fiancee who knows I read these boards often told me I should share.
For those who drive down, you probably bring a cooler and sandwich makings. My idea is a little different and a little less work (I THINK!!) We usually leave at night, and right before we go we make a stop at Wawa or Subway and order several 10-12 inch subs. We then cut each sub half in half, wrap it in wax paper, and bag it up. Toppings on the side of course!!! Then on the way down we can just grab a piece of sub to eat (and we usually bring other snacky food as well) rather then having a soggy sandwich or having to make a sandwich on the fly (the rolls seem to hold up better then bread). We do still make an actualy breakfast stop though.

That's a great idea. I know I would like a subway sandwich better than one from home. :D

that is a wonderful idea. Thanks for the suggestion. DH only likes to stop when its time for gas :sad2: so usually that is our first argument during the hike . This sounds yummy ..will they put the 'veggies etc' in a sep container for your cooler?

Thanks for the tip!
I added it as a reminder to my "Driving Directions."

In my experience you can get everythingon the side (Including mayo if you so desire, though in the cooler the mayo doesnt really seem to increase the SOG factor :D ).
The only thing you may want to purchase is an oil spread in case you want to do italian. You can find this at any grocery store in the sauce aisle for about 2-3 bucks and it keeps well in the cooler. Other then that, besides a quizzical look (and usually this isnt even the case), subway will give you no problems with putting your toppings in little containers and sending you on your way. :cool1:

Sounds good to me, I think that I will do that when we go. My kids love Subway too! Thanks for the great idea.

There are 2 different gas station we stop at on our way down that have subway in them. Occassionally we will grab several subs to share. One of us gases up the van, One goes to subway line with order, the others to bathroom, Frist person out of bathroom releaves subway line person to go to bathroom, sub way guy pays, everyone to van, gas person pays for gas and uses bathroom.

We are ussually done in 10 to 15 min depending on service. This system works really well with a big group.

Momof2sons,

Thats a good idea too...almost like a sub relay :teleport: . It would also work better for those who just want to make a quick food stop and not have to worry about the cooler component of the idea. We usually leave at night (6-7pm, sometimes later) because my guy works an odd shift with 4 10 hour days and leaving at that time saves a vacation day to use at a later date. Soooo for us night-time starters it helps to A) not have to stop and delay our trip anymore and B) we know we have something nutritious to munch on during the night when there may not be a super choice of places to stop for food :drinking1 .
In a few months though it will be me, my fiancee, my mother, and my father going and we will be following a more normal driving schedule and your idea sounds pretty tempting (my dear old dad doesnt like to get off schedule with all those "unneccessary stops" which he deems too lengthy. I love him but he is a typical german daddy :love2: ).

I'll have to remember that when we are driving down in September. Thanks for the tip!

We make our subs at home for our plug in cooler and it's so convenient.

I just wanted to add that we make up individual baggies of snacks too, like chex mix, goldfish, crackers, grapes, etc...my oldest is in charge of retrieving those along with a drink for everyone while we are driving.

The kids look forward to helping us pack the food and we bring 2 or 3 grocery bags for all the trash and get rid of it when we stop for gas or bathroom breaks.

We do a similar deal (packing "side dishes" like chex mix, combos, fruit). Making the subs at home is a good idea too especially if you have an actual family..but alas right now it is just the two of us so its a bit more economical to just buy a couple subs to eat on the way down. Now, when I make the trip with my parents I may hint for my mom to make the subs because she has a gift :-) Things always have tasted better when my mom makes them!!! :goodvibes

What a great idea! We've stopped at Publix (they have the best sandwiches on white mtn bread...although you can also get 'em on sub rolls), but the "big" sub idea is really great!!!

We've done pizza (what's better than cold pizza? :)), homemade sandwiches, chex mix, etc.

What a great idea! Also, if you save your stamps all year, these subs could be free.

Our subway has little packets of oil and vinegar and parmesan in the condiments area by the straws and napkins.
