This sounds like a silly question, but I'm hoping someone here might have had experience with this. I leave for WDW next Friday (9/25), and last night, my wallet was stolen. Of course, it contained my ID...all of my ID since I no longer have a valid passport. I can get a temporary driver's lic. before I leave, but it's only a paper copy that's for use until my hard plastic copy arrives in the mail in about 2-3 weeks. It does have a photo though.

Checking the TSA ID requirements, it states that any state issued DL is acceptable as long as it meets "REAL ID benchmarks". Exactly what does that mean and will my temporary DL have those benchmarks?

My only other option is to get a new military ID since I haven't gotten one since my DH retired from the AF. That's do-able, but more troublesome.

I would go ahead and get a new mil ID just for the sake of having a picture ID. DH is out of town for training so I can't ask him about the real TSA rules for the paper ID, but there is another TSO on the boards that will hopefully be able to answer. I do know that at the very least if they don't concider your paper ID to be a "valid" ID then they will do extra screening to ensure that you are who you say you are. No big deal, but it will take a little more time to get through security.

From TSA's website:

Effective June 21, 2008, adult passengers (18 and over) are required to show a U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID that contains the following: name, date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature in order to be allowed to go through the checkpoint and onto their flight.

I am guessing the 'real ID benchmarks' are the tamper-resistant feature like a hologram which would not be on the temporary license.

I don't know if it has changed but you can still go through but you will be subjected to a full search (wanding, patdown, manual inspection of carryons).

Here is the TSA website that talks about ID, and "real ID" basicly all driver id's meet the requirements as does a passport and military ID.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/acceptable_documents.shtm

There is also list there of other accpetable documents.

Basicly if they feel they can confirm your identity to their satisfaction they will let you fly. You will probably be subject to additional screening. Arrive VERY early and stay calm, patient and pleasant.

Bring as much ID as you can get your hands on. Definately your temporary DL and see if you can get a "walking ID" Basicly a DMV issued ID for non drivers, here you can get them same day. If a milatary ID can be done in a week, definately!! The temp DL won't meet the benchmarks but it will help along with other documents.

Otherwise, find your BC, ML and anything else that helps prove you are the person on the flight reservation. Even if your passport is expired bring that, along with the other documents it will help. If your work ID has a picture bring that as well.

Good luck -

Just bring along some chocolate as a 'just in case' measure and you'll be fine ;) (Not the good stuff, though, never let them know that you are in possession of the good stuff....)

I would take your expired passport, too. It's still ID, just not ID that can get you out of or back into the country...but it's still ID that could help.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm feeling a bit less panicked today. Cancelled all my credit cards (all 2 of them!) and learned that both of those as well as my bank debit card should arrive by this Wednesday. I'll get my temporary DL Monday and try to arrange a time at the ANG base to get a new military ID.

Oh, and barvaria, you know I keep the good chocolate under lock and key at home!

Good advice.

Keep in mind that people lose their id all the time. Often when they are on vacation had have *no* back-up. In almost all cases, they still manage to get on the plane. It can a pain, but it's nothing anything to stress over.

PS - This is as good a place as any for my PSA on passports (directed towards everyone, not the OP). Even if you don't expect to leave the country anytime soon, consider getting a passport. It's great to have as back-up ID. And, hey, you never know when you are going to win an all expense paid trip to Disneyland Paris!

Or your husband has an 11 day business trip sprung on him at the last minute, the hotel room is big enough for the family, the prices are ridiculously OK for the destination (BIG airline prices) and it could, just barely, be done...all but for the lack of a renewed p'port for the wife and any pport for the kidlet. :headache:

OP, just bring it all, stay calm, give yourself LOTS of time for security...it'll be OK.

It is my understanding that if you have your paper ID and any other ID that is possible you will still be able to get through the TSA checkpoint. Make sure to plan extra time for additional screening and all should be good.

I had the same problem last November. I lost my wallet and cound not get a new pic ID before our trip. We flew out of JFK, and threy mark your boarding pass (as having no ID) and then you go through extra securtiy they search you, your bags and all that good stuff. But it really wasn't bad, I was expecting it (we arrived early to give us extra time) and they (TSA) were all VERY nice. It took about 5-10 mins longer then my family and I was given the go ahead. I had with me, my birth certificate and medical insurance cards. The same routine at MCO, with the same outcome.

*side note: We used DME and on check out day, we wanted to use RAC, I could not check in there, I had to do it at the airport. My family did (DH and 2 kids) and all our bags except one (mine) were checked in...we just kept the smallest one out and stored it with bell services until our DME pick up time.

And this is JUST a guess, but in this case, send most of the 'odd' items thru with someone else. ie: just try to go thru with the MINIMUM you personally actually have to carry, and I would guess that would speed it up somewhat also. If you have a bag full or electronics, your 3-1-1 baggie full of stuff etc, IMO it would mean they would look at stuff a little closer. Now, IMO, that just makes sense, but we are talking about the TSA and sometimes that doesnt seem to mean a lot :)
