.... we spent 2 nights over at the Hard Rock Hotel earlier this week.

We had a deluxe queen room (not sure what they call it) with 2 queen beds and a full sized sofa bed.

The furniture was beat up, lots of scratches on the wood and some cracks.

The carpet was wet in front of the closet.

The hallways were not quite as clean as Disney.

The stairways were filthy! Just plain very dirty and needs a good power washing and painting. Dirty dishes on the landings the whole time were there. Lots of cigerette butts and burnt wood match sticks also.

On the walk to the parks must be near where they walk dogs cause in the afternoon heat it stank of dog droppings - just awful.

Lots more drunk people around the pool than I've ever seen at a Disney resort pool.

Only one lifequard on duty at a time at the HRH pool. (There are 4 on duty at once here at the WL & VWL).

That said: The lobby was beautiful and we had a first class meal at The Kitchen.

Don't tell me that. We are staying in a Deluxe Queen room for Halloween Horror Nights and it's costing us a fortune. I hope that the room isn't in bad shape.

On a side note, Did you take any pictures of the room becuase I have been looking everywhere to try and find updated pictures.

Now that's my kind of place!! Can't wait until October!!! :rotfl2:

Wow, sorry you encountered so many problems. Did you voice your concerns to someone who works at the hotel? If I notice a problem, I always notify someone to at least give the hotel a chance to fix it...if not for me, then hopefully for the next/other guests. I thought guests with pets were supposed to pick up after them. I'm sure that's pretty hard to enforce but something can be done about it. Again, I'm sorry to hear about your negative experience.

I too think their lobby is beautiful. I think I'm going to check out The Kitchen when I'm there next month. If you don't mind me asking, what did you order from there? :) Did you enjoy the parks?

For some reason, the OP doesn't surprise me....a DVC member comparing to Disney....typical :sad2: At least the food and lobby got a good review

I am a DVC member and stayed at the Board Walk villa's and Portofino Bay a week ago..There was no comparison, the Portofino wins hands down. The BWV seems so small. :confused3

I'd give the edge to Loews, primarily because when we stayed BWI Concierge, they ran out of beer one night at about 5:45, thanks to a piggish family who hoarded them. I asked the Innkeepers Club staff if they were going to replenish the beer, and I got an exasperated look that told me I was bothering them, and they'd check, but they didn't think so. Are you kidding me? At $400+ a night, they can't go find me two bottles of beer? THAT's never happened at RPR Club in all of our half dozen or so stays there. And, don't even get me started on GF RPC who told me they would chill some champagne for me, but I had to come down and get it myself (they told me to come down by 9 pm). I can't even begin to tell you how many people I had to explain the term "champagne flutes" to. We wound up drinking expensive champagne out of tumblers. And all at the bargain price of 2x my monthly mortgage payment per night.

Don was there not a lifeguard on duty at the top of the slide as well?

I guess the bad part about the carpet in front of the closet was that it was wet, the good part would be that they cleaned the stain.

Although I didn't like the new decorating in the rooms, the wood furniture in our rooms were fine.

Hope you let someone know that you were unhappy.

responses (and remember that UNIVERSAL IS NOT DISNEY AND DISNEY IS NOT UNIVERSAL and the two should not be compared-but people still do)

I have ALWAYS seen more that one life guard at HRH.

I doubt there were more drunks per capita that any other hotel including disney's 4 star resorts. Disney doesn't serve drinks? Find that hard to believe.
Just stayed at HRH and found the pool area the opposite.

Where you walk to the parks IS the area where dogs get walked. Did you tell someone at HRH? If you don't tell them how would they know?

Hallways not clean. With you 100% there. Rugs need replacement and food, drink and trays are left outside rooms for hours. It is disgraceful.

Furniture beat up? Perhaps person before you trashed room? Did you call star service? Again they need to know these things. Wet carpet may have either been trashed room or like DAMO said carpet cleaning. Funny how the AC eventually dries it anyway. Perhaps the fridge needed defrosting? Again you have to tell star service.

finally about the stairways. who ACTUALLY uses the stairs at HRH? We usually stay on seventh floor but even 5th floor would be a walk to lobby. Stairs in any hotel are disgusting. You must have stayed on Second floor with a convention and that would explain everything.

I have stayed at HRH seven consecutive years and have never found the things you say except carpet dirty and dishes outside rooms.

I give edge to Loews and against a DVC member who may have a vested interest towards disney corp. If your room was that bad you should have made a stink and had your room changed.

fyi reference your dvc points

How do we know reviews are totally objective when one is a confirmed WDW lover? I am a WDW fanatic (although the magic has been slipping away in the past few years.) I am also a USF fanatic. We often combine both resorts in one trip. We also make separate trips. (I have lost count the number of trips we have made to both resorts.) I can only say that I have had great experiences and bad experiences at both WDW and USF resorts. Our stay at HRH Club in July was a better experience than the OP's. Our room did not look run down at all and service was great. However, our villa at BCV in August had several rings stains on the dining table, stained rugs, mold, etc. Will it stop me from gong back? No! Why, because the BCV room we had last summer was in great shape. We had issues with getting our room at RPR Club this August. Have we banned RPR as worse than WDW resorts? NO!!! It was only one issue after many, many wonderful stays there. I think people need to take some reviews with a grain of salt and try to read between the lines.

The one comparison I would like to make that I hope is objective and not subjective is that the Loew's resorts give you more bang for your buck than the WDW resorts. I also feel that Disney as well as their loyal fans place WDW up on a pedestal and as a result of that with the higher prices they charge, I expect more. Instead, for the last two years I have experienced less. OK, just one more observation - I have also experienced better customer service at Loew's vs WDW in the last few years.

Ultimately, we continue to love both and will continue to frequent both. However, USF will be getting a bit more attention (and our money) than WDW for now.

Not all DVC members are created equal;) we stayed at HRH last year for the first time and the HRH was the highlight of our trip. We usually stay in a 1-bdrm at DVC with full kitchen and living room. the room at HRH with two queen beds was great, even for our family of 4, service was as good or better than at disney resorts and in our opinion the pool at HRH was better than stormalong bay at the beach club, And the fact that they have wait staff at the pool who bring everything from full meals to a never ending supply of margaritas didn't hurt either:cool1: :thumbsup2

My point? I hate when disney and US are pitted against each other. I fly 3.5 hours from frozen Maine and no way I am limiting my fun I want all Orlando has to offer:woohoo: , both locations are top rate in my book.

If USO offer a similar timeshare/vacation club i would own one there as well:banana: :cloud9:

Not all DVC members are created equal;)

Oh yeah...I know.... but it seemed the OP was "looking" for something good to say about the hotel. No mention of the parks/trip, just the hotel and how miserable it was. He led me to believe in post that HRH was crap and DVC resorts are "all that and can do no wrong"....at least, that's the impression I got. jmo.... I know all you DVC peeps ain't the same....some of you actually like/prefer UO ;)

I didn't see that many drunks at the HRH pool when we were there, but of course I was pretty drunk and may not have noticed.

Wait wait wait, you are complaining about the HARD ROCK hotel?! It sounds like you should be thrilled because the room was probably demolished by members of Poison who stayed there before you (you should have taken the stuff to Ebay!). The dog poop smell was because Brittney Spears' entourage didn't clean up after her little weiner dogs did their business, and the stairs were like that because that's where the groupies passed out waiting for autographs. Oh and don't start on the pool. The reason you saw only one lifeguard was because the others were rushing upstairs to try and prevent Ozzy from diving from the balcony.

You should have stayed at Portofino, where other than the club lounge, the experience was absolutely perfect!

Seriously though, and I don't want to make blanket statements, but I would imagine the theming of the hotels is somewhat indicative of what to expect: Royal Pacific for families, Hard Rock for young couples and older teens, and Portofino for older couples. That's obviously not 100% true, but I would expect more drunken rowdy behavior from a place with 'Hard Rock' in the name than the other two locations.

Love it. I laughed by butt off.
Now, on to my opionion on the subject. Since It seems Dis and Universal is being compared here, I would like to add my two cents. First, I would like to say that I grew up in California going to Disneyland on a regular basis. We lived real close to it. We moved to Florida and visited Disneyworld for the first time. I was married with little kids and Dis seemed the way to go for the kids. So, I was a Disney girl. We visited Universal in Florida too and liked it. It was much more relaxed. I was starting to like universal a tad bit better. As an adult though I needed a vacation to recoup from my vacation at Disney. We use to always stay offsite when we went to both of these parks. A couple years ago we decided to go to both Dis and Universal. We decided to stay onsite at both. We have a large family and this trip we decided to take our two little girls so we were able to afford staying onsite. We stayed at pop century at Dis and RPR at Universal. One of the reasons I wanted to stay onsite at Dis is because I read posts saying you could go back and rest the kids mid-day and go back. I found that to be impossible to do. If it was just me doing so then it was no big deal to go back to the hotel(I had to once, but that's another story in itself.LOL). It would just take way too much time to take the kids back to the hotel and then back to the parks. So, that idea doesn't work, atleast not for my family.
This is my review and comparisom between the two. Pop century was great. The kids had a blast. I enjoyed having the Dis atmosphere all around us and having the store/restaurant right there(sorry, i can't remember the name of the store/restaurant) The room was clean. The service was great. The added attention from the housekeeping with placing their stuffed animals in the curtains and so forth was nice. Will we go back to pop century? Yes we will. But only because we enjoyed the resort. What we didn't enjoy was the transportation to the parks. We drove to Dis so we had the option of the busses or driving ourselves to each park. We did both. This is where Universal wins hands down. It took so much time just getting to the parks. Then, when you got to the parks you had to fight through the crowds which got down right scary at times. In planning our Dis trip, I used Tourguide Mike, which helped out tremendously. I had every detail of our day planned out so that we didn't have to wait in lines forever and were able to make the best of our time. Even with the excellant tips from him, it got scary trying to get to some of the rides. You have to get there early and know all the tricks and still get trampled when attempting to get a fastpass just to be able to ride a popular ride. At the end of the day we would be exhausted. I like the fact that there are multiple parks but they are so far apart. That exact fact is what i love about Universal. We stayed at RPR the first trip. We ended up extending our tickets to annual passes and went back and stayed at HRH. It was so much more relaxing. I wish they had more parks like Disney but would that then cause the same problem with getting to the parks taking so long like at dis?:confused3
Our second trip at the HRH was great. We had some issues with the hotel itself but the perks of being so close to the parks and the fotl access is worth it. I wish the hotel wasn't so expensive but again, the perks for the parks makes me want to stay onsite. It's so awesome to walk over to the park just to eat(we had the meal deal), watch the night time fireworks show and then walk back and crash is so cool.
Our little ones were 6 and 8 yrs old when we did both dis and universal. We asked what they like better? They liked both places but when we said we were going to Universal this year they were and still are so excited. They keep watching their height to see how tall they are getting so they can go on some of the bigger rides. A quick note: We have family in Florida and when we did our two trips we seperated the trips with our kids. The first trip was with the youngins. The second trip we left the youngins with family and took our two teenage girls and stayed at the HRH. So, the older ones never stayed at the RPR and the little ones never stayed at the HRH. I think the little ones are going to love the HRH.
My bottom line opinion on Universal Studios and DisneyWorld is this:
1.If you want to stay in a resort with the Disney theme all around you and you don't mind the transportation issues and your kids are younger then Disney is probably more for you. Keep in mind the crowd and the time of year you are going. Disney is a kind of vacation that you really need to take enough time to see it all. That means more vacation days. Don't try to cram it all in too quickly. You'll enjoy it more if you have enough days to really spread it out.
2. If you want to be close to the parks and be able to walk to them and take a mid-day break and go back to the hotel to rest or whatever you please, then Universal onsite resorts should be your choice(especially HRH).
I realize you can do this at some of the deluxe resorts at disney but it wouldn't work with all of the dis parks.
3. The fotl access at Universal blows away Dis fastpass. And I mastered the fastpass system at Dis.
4. We don't have to get up bright and early in the morning at Universal to beat the crowds and long lines. Even though i'm always too excited to sleep in much. But, the option is there. It's funny and i never thought i would complaign about this :rolleyes1 but i did find myself griping about having to walk so long through the express line on rides at Universal that i was getting wiped out and out of breath by the time i got to the front of the line. :rotfl: I was with kids mind you and they wanted to rush up to the front of the line so i had to keep up. I do wish they would adjust the ropes in the express line when there's such a short line. It seems silly to walk so far. And yes, i did just go under some ropes to shorten the walk.

So my 2cents here is that each park has something to offer for everyone. It's just like every other theme park out there(just the most famous). Everyone has their own preferences in what they want in a vacation. Some people can financially afford to stay at deluxe resorts and stay at only the deluxe resorts at Dis. Some people can only afford to stay at the value resorts(that's us). We saved for a long time to stay onsite at universal. For us, the perks of staying onsite at universal made the expense of the hotel worth it. We still try to find the best deal at Universal onsite hotels.
I think the problem here is that even though it's convenient to have both a Dis board and a Universal board on the same forum website, these two parks are in competition with eachother. They are the two big theme parks in Orlando that compete for business. I'm not including Sea World cuz it's a theme park of a different kind(i hope that made sense). You have die hard Dis fans and die hard Universal fans. I actually like both parks and resorts and have dislikes about both. I'm kinda on the fence on the subject i guess. But, the one thing that really urks me big time is when someone wants to come to a board and vent on an issue that occurred with their vacation, alot of people seem to attack them. Sometimes all you want to do is just vent. Or sometimes you want the thoughts and advice of seasoned park visitors who could help you on what to do about the situation. But the last thing the poster needs is to be attacked because they had a bad experience and feel the need to vent. I've been posting on forums for a very long time and i have noticed that it's become difficult to say anything that may press the wrong button and then your just attacked. I'm not referring to any specific board. I'm talking about forums in general. It's really too bad that it has come to this. Why can't people just have the right to say what they want to as long as it's not vulgar or against board rules? Anyhow, that's my vent and now i'm done. Thank you for sticking with reading this post if you made it this far. Feel free to reply or move this post if it's in the wrong place. I apologize if it's in the wrong place.:grouphug:

We were there 2 weeks ago for the first time and had a great time! We have 1 child and 1 tween and DH and I and we all loved it!!

There were at least 3 lifeguards at the pool and the waitstaff asked us if we needed drinks, etc. all day long - they were so attentive! There were tons of little kids, toddlers and tons of families along with teens, singles and grandparents so I wouldn't say this is a place for drunk partiers! Although there may have been some - we didn't see any !

Our room was in perfect shape - very clean, loved the flatscreentv and Ipod dock, furniture looked brand new! Hallways were clean -no smells. Didn't ever use the stairs so I have no idea about them but the elevators weren't stinky - you should have tried them!
Loved the counter service /ice cream place and having Starbucks every morning!! The Kitchen was great and we loved the parks!

Did you not ask to switch rooms if you were unhappy!

We are very frequent GF RPC guests and actually checked into Contemporary Atrium Club the next day! We didn't feel like we were missing anything not staying Club Level at HRH, although I'm sure its great!
You really can't compare Disney and Universal - just 2 completely different experiences,IMHO and shouldn't be compared or you will most likely come out disappointed as it sounds like the OP did.

Hope you have a better vacation next time!:)

That's because the HRH had refurb last year

Yes, that was one of the reasons that we chose to stay there, because of the new decor and furnishings! But rooms can get worn quickly sometimes - my point was that our room was in great shape and looked brand new - no nicks on furniture, etc. like the OP stated he/she had. I would have requested a different room if ours had been in bad shape!

to be fair, you will get your good and bad from both! Just this past June I stayed at one of Disney's values. While you cannot compare a value to a deluxe, the room was so bad that when I got home, I informed my TA as well as Disney. I sent them the pictures I took. Disney refunded me 20% of my 12 night stay So yes, Disney has it's bad too. Some just might not have seen it. I have had great rooms in Universal and at Disney's Deluxe, Mods & Values. I have also had bad rooms as well. It seems to be the luck of the draw which it should not be, but it is...
So if you are going to compare the two, Universal and Disney, Disney has rooms that are in need of rehap too
