Does anyone know of an ice skating rink in or near Walt Disney World that has public skating?

I do know there is a skating rink somewhere in Orlando because my daughters synchro team is trying to raise enough money to compete there in Feb.

Not sure exactly where it is located but here's one.

Orlando Ice Skating Palace, 407-299-5419

Here's another one located in Maitland which is just a few minutes north of downtown Orlando.

Silly me, it helps to open up the yellow pages..here's what I found.

Ice Factory of Central Florida, Kissimmee 407-933-4259
Orlando Iceplex Orlando 407-352-6667

Rock on Ice Skating Arena Orlando 407-363-7465

Hope this helps!

tmq2766,

My daughter is on a synchro team in Peoria! It is a small world.
She must be on the "wrong" team. Her team is planning on competing in MI and WI! Is the Orlando competition ISI or USFSA?

Yes there are several rinks in Orlando. Go to either skateisi.com or usfsa.org and look for associated rinks.

Her team is an ISI team but she also skates solo for USFSA. She skates in Crystal Lake for the Ice Crystals.... Who knows maybe we will see you at the Nationals competition this year:Pinkbounc

Thanks a lot for the info. My 5-y.o. daughter skates at McFetridge in Chicago and can't get enough of it. So we wanted to see if she could get her fix while we were at WDW in February. McFetridge has a very good synchro team. Not that I know enough to tell really, but they looked pretty good to me when I saw them last year at the annual ice show.

My daughter's team is USFSA. She also skates solo for USFSA and ISI.

We should plan a meet since we have a lot in common but I'm hesitant to drive in Chicago! We do the Homewood Flossmore competition in January. I can drive there with no problem!

OhMickey and Artuero,
How old are your girls and how long have they been skating?

My daughter is five, and has been taking lessons for a little over a year. She is just starting pre-alpha.

Hooray, skaters on the Dis site!

My dd's and I all skate, and we get frustrated that there isn't an on-site rink. We haven't yet ventured into Orlando to check out available ice, but we might have to next trip.

Daughter Icy is a singles skater, but had a blast last year as a Clipperette (Youth Intro) They even got silver at Easterns! Little Piglet and I are just Basic SKills skaters, but I passed FS2 yesterday, now on to salchow and real backspins, yikes!

Now how can we get Disney to build a state-of-the art ice rink complex at WDW? They could have Disney on Ice perform there, and hold skating competitions as well. And many skaters have had contracts with Disney - they could do mini-camps, etc ala "skate with Michelle Kwan" LOL!

Anyone notice that many abbreviations in skating and Disney overlap?

MK - Michelle Kwan, Magic Kingdom
AP - Ann Patrice McDonough, Annual Pass
CoP - Carousel of Progress, Code of Points (new ISU scoring system)

OK, you can tell I'm a Disney/skating junkie, but it's just so nice to know that there are some skaters here !

Schmeck, whose daughters always saw my idea of heaven would be skating at WDW with my family and Michelle Kwan

My daughter has been skating since she was 3 (she's almost 7 now) and for us - I use this (trips to Disney) as a FORCED break from skating. She's at the point now where she's at the rink 5 days a week - and always comes back from these trips refreshed. Of course she's excited about our scheduled cruise in April on the Mariner of the Seas - the whole idea of skating on a cruise ship terrifies me!

Just chirping in to say that I have a son who figure skates. He's 13 and skates at the Intermediate level. Everytime we go away he wants us to check out ice skating rinks in the area, but I'm nervous about taking his skates onto the plane. With all the security measures now, I can't imagine that they would be allowed as a carry-on and there is no way that I would leave his $900 Riedell's as checked baggage. Anyone travel with skates that know's how the airlines handle them?

I am pretty sure that skates are treated as checked baggage. I know some of my daughters friends traveled right after 9-11 and they had to check them. The skates arrived just fine.:earsboy:

We too use Disney as a forced vacation. My daughter skates 6 days a week. The only reason we don't do 7 is because there is no ice available on Mondays! She absolutely loves skating but we love Disney more!

I think Disney is a great break. The skaters still get plenty of exercise while forgetting about the rink for awhile. I've also noticed that whenever we do take a break, my daughter seems is refreshed and more determined to master whatever she has been working on.

One of DD's coaches said she came back from our last trip much more focused... she didn't skate for 5 days, but she did practice everything possible while waiting in line for the buses!

Of course, having said all this... I am tempted to drive over to Maitland to check out the rink...

When my daughter's synchro team flew down to Easterns, they wanted to use their skate bags as carry-ons. The airline let them know in advance that the bags were OK, but the skates had to go in their checked luggage. They actually went down two days early, just in case their luggage was lost, so there would be some chance of getting the skates back in time.

A friend skates on the Haydenettes - they got to bring their skates on board with them, but they were locked in a very secure compartment by the stewardess. They also had to be in a special bag to start out with. This was for an overseas flight after 9/11.

Hi everyone,

Have not been on the computer all weekend and am trying to catch up on e-mails......
My DD8 is getting ready to test in January for the FS2 level.
We have a VERY early morning every Monday, On the ice by 6:15,
Friday nights and Saturday mornings......
An ice rink in Disney would be SOOOOOOO Cool.... Why not by the Wide World of Sports, Hockey and Figure Skating competitions.... WHY NOT????????

tmq2766 - must be nice to sleep in! :p My daughter chose (in Sept) to get up early two mornings each week to allow for regular kid activities (brownies, choir, etc)... so she's on the ice by 5 am (sometimes 5:30). I told her, as long as she was willing to get up - I would drive her... and so far there's been no struggle to do so.

My daughter is such a Disney fiend, at her most recent competition she chose "puppies everywhere" to skate to... it was a good choice (young, peppy) and people constantly came up to me asking... what's that music from?

As far as flying... if I decide to take her skates, I'll just check them, and hope like heck her new skates come at the end of this week as scheduled!

I keep hoping for a competition in Florida (possibly mid winter)... wouldn't mind having to travel to that one! ::yes::

Candleonwater,

How old is you DD? My DD is NOT a morning person so I was in TOTAL shock when she picked this time of the morning over any evening hour that was available. We live about 20-25 minutes from the rink so we are up at abou5 am every monday.

That music is so cool.... DD skated to Lilo and Stitch in June for a Competition.... Not Hawaiian Rollercoaster but the other Childrens Choir song, Awe man I cannot remember the name of it..... We had people come up to us telling us that that music just makes them feel so happy.......
I see you will be in Disney in a couple days, who knows maybe we will run into each other.

She's still 6 (turns 7 two weeks from today). We're in the same boat - live about 1/2 hour away from the rink - leave the house at 4:30... I, too, thought my daughter wasn't a morning person... she would stay up until 10 every night if I let her... now she has to go to bed at 7.

Where are you staying when you get to WDW? We're at the BC.
