My DD sometimes has a bit of a reaction to insect bites. The school nurse told me today that she was in complaining of pain from two on her lower leg, and that she put ice on them. She recommended a topical Benedryl at home.

Well, her ankle is really swollen! Would something help that, like oral Benedryl or Ibuprofen?

I called my doctor's office, and they must have JUST closed -- it's not quite 5:00, but they're not answering.

Ibuprofen won't help swelling from a bug bite but if she twisted her ankle and it is swollen from that it will help. Benadryl if the swelling is from a bug bite.

You could give them both. The benadryl will help the allergic response and the ibuprofen would treat the inflammation. The benadryl is less likely to upset her stomach but will make her really drowsy. hth

Benadryl works really well. My boys are allergic to black flies and I give them benadryl for the swelling, always helps. there is a topical benadryl cream you can use also. The liquid never makes my kids tired, I wish it did!

Ibuprofen for the pain, topical benadryl for the itch, liquid benadryl if more relief is needed.
Hope she's feeling better soon!

You can always call and ask a pharmacist for their advice. I usually call walgreens when I have questions about medications. They are easier to get ahold of than a doctors office and they are open at weird hours.

Good luck.

Thanks everybody - -I gave her liquid Benedryl and applied Benedryl cream, and it seemed to help.

The swelling concerned me this time, more than usual. I'll be calling her dr. in the morning, and/or checking with the school nurse again. (she's actually a PA)
