A few weeks ago my daughter (almost 6) and I found out we have IBS. Anyway, I am just now getting to know what types of foods are ok and what types will set off an attack, and we are going to WDW (staying offsite in a townhome) in February. We will eat breakfast at the townhome, and sometimes go back for dinner, but what about lunch (counter service is what we usually have)? My main concern is we should avoid fatty, fried foods, and dairy, and we usually have counter service for lunch because we don't like to plan our day around ADRs. Anyone have any experience with this, and any tips to offer?

I think from your post that you have the D type of IBS. Is that right? That is what I have, and I have made many trips to Disney World. Definately watch what you eat. For me that means little or no caffinee, no greasy foods, and to avoid eating tons of ruffage. I also take 1 immodium in the morning, and that kind of sets things. Taking calcuim helps with that too.

Fast passes are a God-send for people like us! Use them wherever you can! The shorter my time in line the better. No time to worry about a flare-up where you need to find a bathroom NOW! The good thing is that there are plenty of bathrooms at Disney World. Be sure to grab a map and locate all of the restrooms on it so you know where you have to go, in case of an emergency.

Remember to take it easy, and not to worry too much. Not easy to do, I know. But if you remind yourself that it is no big deal, and you can handle whatever may come up, you will be much better off. I hope you and your DD have a great trip!princess:

I tend to bring in my own sandwich for lunch, and whatever else I generally eat as a snack, fruit, veggies. My husband eats the the counter service, I eat what we brought.

Most counter service seems to be fried foods, and things with lots of oil in them, or red sauce which i have to avoid. At MK: cosmic rays has a rotisery chicken, I don't eat the skin because of the spices/fat on it.
take a look at all ears net . com they have listing of all the menus, look them over.

If you do sit down meals, I strongly suggest you request to talk to the chelf, to eliminate some of the oils, etc from the cooking for a safe dinner and any other triggers.

I think there is a way to get special requests at counter service but i believe you have to do it in advance. This may be a better option for you.
Since we plan a sit down meal per day, figuring exactly where we will be for lunch for us seems to rigid, and I'm fine eating the sandwich and stuff i bring in.

Try to keep the fiber intake up w/ your daughter, as that seems to help me. If you eat a fiber rich bread, or snacks, pack them along. If anything, you can use your bread, instead of the sandwiches that come w/ a buttered white bread at counter service. It will eliminate some of the oil, grease.

If pepper, or other spices aggrivate your daughters condition. Be aware the mickey mac and cheese has pepper in it.

I also believe that all the restraunts are suppose to have ingredients lists for the foods. Maybe others can give your more info about that, i haven't requested those things at counter service.

At ssr, they can make your sandwich the way you want. You can pick the bread, and what you want on it, very helpful.

Most of the counter service places tend to marinade the chicken & chicken nuggets w/ spices, so I have avoid that.

Hi and :welcome: to disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. The top item is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Page 3 of the FAQ has a lot of links, and one entire section related to special diets.

I don't have IBS but I do have IBD and the one thing I find important is always knowing where a bathroom is. (And trust me, I think I have been in every WDW bathroom on property!!) ;) Knowing where I need to rush off to next is actually quite comforting. And what ever you do, stay away from the bathroom by Pinnochio's restaurant in Fantasyland around lunch time - it get packed and it is no fun waiting in line when you HAVE to go.

Now that you are more aware, you will probably start to realize what your and DD's triggers are. Definitely avoid fatty, rich foods, and stay hydrated. DD cannot tolerate milk at all, so we steer very clear of that. We try to eat our bigger meal at lunch and have a light dinner.

Also, try to relax and be prepared. What Tonya said about getting comfort from knowing where the bathrooms are is so true. Stress is our surest trigger. If DD starts having trouble at WDW, about 1/2 the time the stress just keeps it going. So, avoiding flare-ups and staying calm are key!!

Good luck and enjoy!

Has anyone had trouble bringing food into the parks, or any trouble eating it at the restaurants in the parks?

There is no problem bring food into the parks. However, be careful that what you bring will not spoil between the time it is prepared and eaten.

You are permitted to bring in a "small, soft-sided" cooler that can fit in a locker. There is an absolute prohibition against any alcoholic beverages or anything in a glass container except baby food.

As a general rules bring your own food into a table service restaurant is frowned upon unless it is a medical substitute for food (such as liquids only).

They would much rather accomodate you by preparing what you can eat.

Some of the sugar free or no sugar added desserts have malitol. I know the brownies did. Many people even without IBS will have stomach problems from malitol or any of the similar sweetener products. I try to avoid it or I'll just have a bite or two.
