I wonder which is worse..?

I don't really see a problem with the way the girl sang it, but Roseanne was horrible!!

I liked parts of it, but really didn't understand why she actually changed the melody line at times. I didn't mind the embellishments, but when she kept changing the melody line in the lower spots it struck me as very odd. Initially, until she got to the higher portion, I wondered if she honestly didn't know the song.

"Principal Jeff Henderson told The Herald-Times in a statement that people had complained that while the words to the anthem were the same, the tune was unrecognizable. He declined to comment to The Associated Press."

this guys an idiot.

"unrecognizable"???

i'm Canadian and i heard your anthem in the tune. ok so she did a few small changes but please what celeb singer doesn't these days. you can't really blame her for doing it when the people she probably looks up to as singers do it too.

maybe instead of getting on her a$$ for doing it people who ask professionals should demand they sing it properly or they won't get paid.

hell half the time i hear your anthem being sung i cringe and what some of the singers do to it.

anyways you guys aren't alone with singers butchering you're national song. it's started to happen with ours now and it drives me crazy.

I have no idea why her version is thought to be disrespectful to the military. I didn't like it, but that's because it just didn't sound like the Star Spangled Banner to me.

Artistic is nice, but when you are singing a national anthem, it should be readily recognizable. Unless you are singing it to your family or something or are introduced as Shia Singing Her Version of....so people are ready for it.

I feel badly for the kid. She has a nice voice and it was a big deal for her. You would think adults could just let her have her moment. Although I'm not a big fan of her version, I don't find it a big deal.

I didn't like her version at all. I don't like when people add their own spin to the National Anthem. Sing it like it was meant to be sung. Add your own twist on other songs.

And what give you the right to tell any one the way the National Anthem is meant to be sung. I live in an America that can change and grow and can incorporate more then one vision on how a song is to be sung.

This is how I felt. I don't care for her version. I think she has a lovely voice, though. In fact, I would love to hear her sing it in the traditional manner.

There are just certain songs that shouldn't be changed.

The national anthem.... anything by Judy Garland, Me and Bobby McGee.

There are just some things that are perfect they way they are.
If you don't mind that national anthem being sung to the tune of an old English drinking song... ;)

History lesson, for those who don't know, of the origin of The Star Spangled Banner. Francis Scott Key wrote the poem after seeing the stars and stripes still standing tall, though had truely and seen better days, after the fort had been under fire from the red coats all night. Moved with patriotic pride, he put pen to paper and wrote Defence of Fort McHenry. The melody came from a British drinking song popular in the Americas at the time.

While I'm not a fan of vocal manipulation, the song isn't disrespectful (I'm a Marine, DH was Army Airborne Ranger.) She's exersizing her freedoms the we fought for.

Um - the fact that when you change the basic melody, it is no longer the same song?

In general, when the melody is changed it is called a variation. While not all people are fond of artists who embellish, embellishments added to the melody are more widely accepted. This girl deviated from the melody.

I don't know which is worse, purposely putting your own spin on it, or trying to sing it and getting the words wrong. I want to say it happened during the Olympics with an athlete that won gold (at least he was just singing along), and a few times during sporting events.

I'm horrible tone deaf, and I like to sing a long, as long as every one else is louder than me.

I think her version was beautiful. I think ANY version is beautiful. To me it's not about how it is sung, it's about how it makes me feel and the meaning behind it. That's why it was written, right?

:thumbsup2:

I thought the girl's version was fine. I go to sporting events all the time and have never heard it sung the same way twice. I don't understand how some could complain that it was unrecognizable. What could be the real reason these fine folks are all up in arms?:confused3

I think so too. :thumbsup2

Forget about Rosanne's rendition. That was just plain horrible. Of course the only other one that was really bad was Tracy Chapman who didn't even know the lyrics.

The National Anthem, as others have said, is difficult to sing due to the range in notes. The only thing I found with the teenage girls is that it sounded like her voice range could not go as low as the melody does. Other than that, it sounded fine to me :confused3.

It is just racism alive and well as far as the people complaining.

Whether she sucked or not is a separate issue imo. It was pretty bad.

:sad2:Are you serious?
I thought it was bad and I don't care who was singing it. It did not sound like the National Anthem is supposed to sound.

So when Roseanne sang it, was it sexism or size discrimination?

This was on the news quite a bit here and there were claims made by the local media that this was racist. The school has since apologized and said that she can come back any time she wants and sing her own version.
