I made a grave mistake and purchased someone's points to reserve at Auliani. it is her home resort and the reservation showed up for months. Today I went to check it and it is cancelled!! The loss of $$ is a problem but right now my main concern is that I promised this trip to my daughters and they have been dreaming of this trip for months.

What, if anything, can I do to complain/file a notice with Disney/remedy?

I know i was foolish to reserve with an indvidual and not a company, so simply yelling at me with no ideas of how to move forward would be super unproductive.

I greatly appreciate your expertise and assistance.

First, contact the person you rented from. DVC has been known to modify reservations on a way that they end up with a different confirmation number.

and it's not stupid to rent from someone however Disney won't involve themselves on a problem either. But try to contact the owner-the reservation may still exist.

Also are you sure it has actually been cancelled and isn't a glitch in the online system. My bookings regularly disappear and reappear.

my bookings often go AWOL when I'm on the Disney website, the only place I can see them pretty much consistently is in the Member website but I have been surprised with new confirmation numbers from time to time... who knows what they are doing internally.

OP contact the owner you rented from before coming to conclusions.

If a member booked a stay for you using their points, Disney is not involved in any way and are not on the hook for this. Contacting them will be pointless.

Contact the member and ask them to check it out.

People rent points all the time. It's not "stupid."

As the others have said, if you're getting up in arms over something not showing on the Disney website, do some research first. Reservations always get unlinked. Always. I've had to re-link my October stay several times. Have you tried linking it again? Use your confirmation number (the DVC owner should have provided you with a confirmation) and make sure you spell the name on the reservation exactly the same as it appears on the confirmation, even if it's a misspelling of your actual name. The DVC owner we're renting from misspelled our last name, so every time I relink it, I have to make sure to use the spelling that he used otherwise it doesn't pull up.

Do a little work on the front end before jumping to conclusions.

And Disney won't get involved. Renting DVC is a private transaction between two parties, and Disney won't step in to resolve disputes.

Did you have a waitlist for a different view? That can sometimes change the reservation number. As mentioned, sometimes, MS does something to change the number.

At this point, you have to get a hold of the person to see what is going on. I know I have been linking reservations to my Disney Experience scout. Not sure if this changes who can see the reservation. It's possible it could have to do with this, and your lack of seeing it could be something simple.

Unfortunately, if worst case happens and it had been canceled, the recourse against an individual is going to be tough. Pixiedust: that its just a glitch.

Good luck!

First, I realize I neglected to mention I had reached out to the owner with whom I reserved and they were not responding.

Second, while I understand that many of you have had great success with reserving with an individual owner, I hope you can understand that for a first-timer, one might be inclined to think it was foolish to give someone $$$ with no recourse or way to protect yourself if the owner chose to cancel or not pay their dues or...
Or at least that's what my mother and husband said when I told them what I had done. :upsidedow

Third, and most important, I did finally hear from the owner and it was a new reservation number that caused the old reservation to not show. Aye...

In any event, I truly appreciate your feedback. My lesson learned is that I clearly don't have a heart strong enough for this risk!

Thanks again.

The lesson learned is that you need to know the owner better, check them out, and get references.

Next time, if better suited for your ticker, try David's Rentals or the Timeshare Store. Both are sponsors of this board and offer a more structured rental process. Likely will cost you $1-$2 more a point, but no fuss no muss.

OP I am glad it was a conf# change and things cleared up. As an owner I can understand your trepidation as renter as pretty much you need to place100% trust on the owner.

I do suggest as was mentioned above using David's in the future for more peace of mind. yes you pay a bit more using his services but I think it's worth it.

Have a fantastic time, I know you'll love the resort!

What process has David set up that prevents this from happening if you rent from him. Just curious :)

Both companies mentioned provide a great service but they don't guarantee that the owner won't cancel the reservation.

Nothing really. But he only gives the owner half the money up front and the other half after the non-owner checks in. But a scammer might be happy with half the money.
